can i get some breton background info?

Post » Mon Nov 28, 2011 8:23 pm

hey lore people... im not in here TOO frequently, but i like making a background, or at least knowing my characters role and place in society. ive been bouncing around imperial, nord, and breton but i really think i want to make a breton, but i was going to be a marksman or melee fighter. i know this is not the norm for them, but im sure it is possible right? and are they at all rebellious toward the government in skyrim or cyrodiil? any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I'm sure there must be at least one Breton in a family with a long history of great mages who in his puberty decided to be a rebellious and go against the grain and become a knight, and meet people who at pivitol moments burst out in dance and song.

Anyway you're confusing a slight cultural preference with a universal rule.

Do as you like. According to the previews the game is even geared towards that. The same goes for the exact motivations of your character, it's impossible to draw a line on that without knowing your own stakes in the game.

What do you mean knights aren't the norm for bretons? There are Knightly Order everywhere, and the bretons have pumped out some of the most famous warriors ever. Tiber Septim being one, for instance, and the guy who halted Camoran the Usurper's campaign.

im aware its not IMPOSSIBLE, but i was planning on making a more sinister sort of breton. a rebelling, more cut-throat type. but i was not aware that Tiber Septim was, thats quite a warrior there. thanks for that, but is there ANY history of bretons having disdain towards the empire?

I'm sure a few of them were miffed when Tiber showed up with his big stompy robot.

They sure do. Play Daggerfall, you'll see it's breton nature to create lots of tiny kingdoms, along with having petty feuds and squabbles. It's rare for bretons to unite, unless it's that time of the year to join the redguards and kill as many orsimer as possible.

Also, Tiber only unleashed the Numidium on the altmer, but it was all Wayrest, Sentinel, Daggerfall, Orsinium, and that Blades that made the Numidium attack everyone in the area in TES II.

The political climate of High Rock is very independent, scheming, and divisive. So yes, there's plenty to go on there.
And of course any individual breton can have absolutely any disposition at all. Racial predilections and averages do not set any individual's character and attributes in stone.

Glad you found an answer :)

I found this hilariously ironic. Some sources (the in-game "public story"?) say that a Breton assassin killed Tiber's former liege and then slit Tiber's throat. Preventing the man from using his Thu'um anymore

Tiber Septim and Cutthroat within a few words of each other

not career specific but helpful

Most Breton cities are sprawling trade hubs, and most of the people are either middle-class peasants or destitute beggars. Though they have several paths to prosperity, becoming a nobleman by performing quests and services to curry favor with various rulers is considered the best way, which has created a cultural "quest obsession" amongst young Bretons. The drive to find some great opportunity for fortune and glory has sent Bretons all over northern Tamriel, even to such remote locations as Thirsk on the small island of Solstheim, where one adventurous Breton once became the chieftain. Many use their magical talents to earn success.[1

] They're often considered a friendly and humorous people, though there is little love lost between many Bretons and Redguards after the War of Betony.
Bretons are said to enjoy intellectual pursuits; they often have an affinity for anything related to logic and ordered complexity. This love of knowledge and an affinity for commerce drives them into a host of careers, including trading, the military, sailing, medicine, textiles, manufacturing, writing, theology, philosophy, banking, all kinds of artistry, and other scholarly pursuits.

Another favored profession of Bretons throughout history has been espionage; Breton double agents, assassins, and spies have turned the tide of wars throughout recorded history
Bretons are not disposed to "excessive religion",] but most accepted the Aldmeri pantheon of gods while under Elven rule, and then transitioned to the Eight and Nine Divines once the Elves were toppled. The most notable spirits traditionally worshipped by Bretons are Akatosh, Magnus, Y'ffre, Dibella, Arkay, Zenithar, Mara, Stendarr, Kynareth, Julianos, and Phynaster.[32] But they also recognize Sheor, the Bad Man, believed to have been introduced by the Elves during their conflicts with the Nords as a demonized version of Shor.
