Can we get survival without the sponge?

Post » Tue Feb 23, 2016 12:18 am

I was pleased to hear about the change to survival becoming an actual survival mode...then I remembered that survival comes with bullet sponges. I'm all for being weak (even 1 shot weak), hungry, thirsty, etc. but the bullet sponges do nothing to enhance such a survival feel, instead they put me off from wanting to play it as it makes it too "gamey" (if that makes any sense). I felt the same way about fur wearing bandits eating battleaxe attacks in Skyrim on legendary...it doesn't make it hard, it just makes it feel strangely stupid.

I know this likely won't be seen by anyone at Beth but I really wish they would reconsider the way they handle survival mode and difficulty in their games in general. It would be great if this survival feature was available on all difficulties, that way I could balance the game myself and make my guy weak but keep the weapon damage at normal levels so a shotgun is still a shotgun.

FNV did this. hardcoe mode with Normal enemy bosses.

Because tbh Normal is hard enough. There is so much magical [censored] that happens even when playing on normal, that....well....yeah.

Enemies are pretty much sponges to begin with in this game anyway. Gunners are the worse.

Well high ranking Gunners wear Combat Armour which offers decent protection against both energy and ballistic damage, try a grenade mayhap?

Super mutants have to keep clean somehow.

But yes, survival mode should be a separate game mode from difficulty level that can be toggled on, similar to hardcoe mode. Don't see any reason to oppose it as it just offers more ways for someone to play the game the way they desire to.

My comment in itself was a joke. See where i said A sponge, you see the A. The title is not "Can we get survival without bullet sponges" its just sponge. Yes it was a poor joke, and it is even better when i have to explain it.

Thank you for getting it!

there are no sponges on Survival

it just requires the right perks and weapons, like it should on the highest difficulty :/

I've been playing on survival since the announcement, it's not nearly as spongey as I thought it would be. Admittedly, I was making assumptions off of how previous games played rather than actual experience with this one.

I agree, on most of playthroughs enemies go down fairly quick. Haven't really noticed any sponginess, but we all have our preferences. I like it when the gameplay actually changes alot based on numbers, just a small tweak to your gun can make a difference.

I thought the enemies were hard enough to kill on normal difficulty. Although for the BOS this does kind of make sense when they're covered in armour. But I do get kind of sick of raiders taking two headshots to kill.

Trollololololol

...yea its supa easy.

Ofcourse you could buy at the start just some Legendarie Weapons from Vault 81 or from Cricket but Standard Weapons having much Problems to handle Survival Mode Enemies even with the rigth Perks. Wanna tell me a Pistol only or Machinegun only PT's have enough Power to handle Enemies on Survial Mode? Good Luck with finding enough Ammo.

Really?

The annoying amount of mobs that come running at me. The amount of cartridges I put into Raiders. Sometimes it takes me a whole 12 rounds for my rifle to hit.

the 10mm pistol is enough to 1-2 shot all the super mutants and raiders that you face at the start in the northwest region. The Gunslinger and the Gun Nut perks obviously help with that.

The Hunting and the Combat Rifle are great weapons as well, once you've past the first 10 levels.

There are occasional legendary enemies that are tough at the start and that you have to avoid, but they are pretty rare.

The Deathclaw at the start and one legendary Mirelurk are all 'bulletspongy' enemies that I had on my current playthrough until level 15.

And ammo shouldn't be a problem, as you find enough traders early on, where you can swap your drugs and your pre-war money for ammo.

10mm ammo is overall pretty common and you can always back it up by using .38 pistols on easy enemies such as radroaches and mole rats.

Scrounger perk, need 2 luck for that. Make sure you always upgrade your weapons when you get the chance. Pick damage perks, use chems (if your character is allowed to). I never said it was super easy, and i don't find it to be easy myself, but i enjoy the extra challenge added and i don't feel like the enemies are as spongy as people claim. That might be me and my preference though, i am playing an RPG, not a real life FPS simulator. I want to see the numbe crunching in effect, not one or two shot everything.

Yes really. Are you using hip fire? Aiming down sights? What is your perception? Are you using scopes, reflex sights etc?

I am all in for this mod providing enemies don't take 20 bullets to kill... aka "the sponge effect" most hardcoe mods on games seem to come with. But being thirsty? hungry? sick? oh yeah bring it on. And I would ask also that radiation not only degrees your health but also add physical effects like vomiting and such. bring on the realism!

Survival difficulty starts brutal,

but over time you build your perks, damage and protection allowing progress.

normal hard enough? Normal after level 20 becomes easy. I had to increase the difficulty because of this.

Agreed. Some raider shouldn't eat multiple .50 cal rounds to the head. It's ridiculous.

Some guns have been modded for hip fire and poor reduced range. He uses rifles mostly and pistols for closer ranger. Because I was kind of going for a Wasteland cowboy. Beyond that though. He's still in the early stages of the game at lvl 13. And his Perception is something like I think 7. Sooo...

His hardened calibrated hunting rifle is still probably his best weaponed, modded it myself. That's the "oh [censored]" gun when enemies are taking too much to kill, and I hide in a corner and kick back that baby like its a [censored] shut gun down its sight.

For you. But I never been good at games like Halo or Call of Duty. Why do I mention this? Because I am a [censored] shooter to begin with. I don't always use VATS and I am better with precision perception play in Fallout than I have ever been a gun n run. But I am [censored]tastic shooter. So it is hard for me even at lvl 20

That may be a skill issue but everyone I've spoken too says the game is too easy, even on survival difficulty it's not that difficult. There's a reason why the survival mode is being overhauled to be more hardcoe mode in New Vegas(despite the fact even that mode wasn't difficult either, just a pain needing to eat, drink, sleep which most people do anyway).

I've played fallout 3 and new vegas before so to me the game is easy because i know how to play. Call of Duty and Halo are what we call Twitch gameplay, not the same as fallout, which means:
