Can I have a Fence Without Gaps

Post » Thu Mar 03, 2016 4:03 pm

Turning Starlight Drive In, into a big community, a bit like covenant.

I am trying to build a wooden junk fence, and my fence has so many gaps between the two structures of fence material it's not even funny.

They aren't big gaps mind you, no one can fit through the gap, because I try to snap them as close as I can to snapping them in. But! The gap is going to irk me for the rest of construction.

Use the rug glitch. Type it in to Google/YouTube to get a demonstration. Basically you can put objects and junk fences on top of a rug/mat and the game will connect them, but use the clipping zone of just the rug. So you can glitch the fences in to each other and move them as close together as you want.

It's a bit of a pain in the ass to do, especially with a huge run of fencing like you'd need at Starlight, but you can use the mat glitch to clip objects together. Build one of the small rectangular floor mats in the decorations section. Then build the wall on top of the mat so it's just on the edge of it. Pick the mat up, and the wall will move with it. Since you're moving the mat instead of the wall, the placement will allow you to set it down anywhere as long as the mat isn't clipping into something. Using this you can clip the wall sections together and create a seamless wall.

If you're on PC, the http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/9424/? mod allows you to do the same thing without having to use the mat glitch.

It's a PITA to do but it's possible to have small gaps without the rug glitch. I junk fenced Red Rocket and you can barely notice the gaps- http://i.imgur.com/PMeoHlT.png

This seriously needs to be fixed. There is a mod that lets you do it, but if your on the console, for now at least you'll have to wait.

Different walls?

I generally go for a concrete base / wall combo as on an aesthetic level I dont like the junk fence and using the first option it all snaps together. You can snap the railings onto the concrete base as well.

You can also build up/down slopes by using shack upper floors plus more walls to raise/lower the height of the concrete base.

I've built quite long walls right around Finch Farrm or Greygarden that when they return to the start will snap together if you want to make an archway.

No worries.

Experiment with attaching upper floors/walls to concrete base's as you can get the wall to run up and down slopes as needed. There is a limit to how deep a block can be buried though if it can snap to something generally that helps it get where you want it.

I just avoid fencing large areas. My primary base is at Starlight as well, I build a huge sky fort connecting the tall building to the concession stand thing and it worked splendidly. The only portion that's fenced off is the little pool of water so the purifier won't be damaged.

Thats option 2 for sure. I'm experimenting with legs at the moment, I mean building settlements on stilts as a defence mechanism.

Option 3 for me is I have no walls at all, but some strategically placed watch towers.

But I like the wall to make it look like a proper city. My project is going to be making a megaton like city or goodneighbor.

At the drive in I built my buildings along the edge to help wall it off.

But yeah for console you have to use the rug glitch

For fencing on hills/slopes, here is what I do with the basic fence option you get at game start:

  1. Place a single support post

  2. Snap a single fence section to it (just the wiring, not one with a built-in support post) - it probably hangs partly in the air

  3. Snap a second support post to that fence section - there is almost definitely going to be space underneath it

  4. Move that fence section somewhere else

  5. Select the second support post and gently nudge it down: it should drop straight down to the "ground" in he same place

  6. Take that fence section and snap it to the second post, aimed at the first post. It should look like it is snapped to that first post, but much lower

  7. Repeat 2-6 as needed, with longer fence sections as allowed by terrain

What Wiggy said..

I have built very nice cement walled forts at most of the settlements that fit a rectangle or square. It just looks right!

For the drive-in, start with cement foundation at the screen. get one squared up nicely and connect some more. once you are happy with alignment, darn thing practically builds itself around entire property!

Oh very nice. I'll have to try that. Because it's been irking me this whole entire time.

I killed all the mole rats out of the Starlight Drive In. I lured them out to the grass field and killed them there because I didn't want their [censored] corpses on my property. lol

Place one small mat on a flat (non modded) surface Like some ground or empty foundation.

Place another mat on top of it but slightly askew. (so you can see the mat below but they are touching.)

then click the bottom mat and try to move it a little.

If both mats move you are golden.

Place the junk fence on top of the mats and then move it to where you want the gaps to be gone by clicking on the bottom mat. No need to hold down just click.

You will be able to clip them and remove the gap.

Mind the mats when you pick them up. Pick the top mat up first.. Otherwise you would lose one.

Hope this helps!
