Can heal with spell if you have a two handed weapon?

Post » Sat Mar 12, 2011 2:06 pm

Oblivion was a step forward in this regard, now we're taking a step back. Im not even a huge weapon+spell caster, but to not have it is pretty dumb.

Didn't answer my question.

Didn't answer my question.

How didnt I? I said that Oblivion was a step in the right direction in that regard. Not being able to cast a spell with a weapon equipped=/=sum up Morrowind combat as a whole. Both games got some things right and wrong IMO.

Assuming that you cannot wield a 2H weapon and spell at the same time, which nobody actually knows yet. It's just people making far out assumptions based on their limited imagination. But hey, don't listen to me. I'm just an idiot.

i dont get why some people want everything in the game to be instant and not require any sacrifice or effort or a trade off of some kind. if equipping a healing spell is so much of a deal then just put god mode on and then you wont have to deal with that pesky health issue at all.

dark messiah which had arguably some of the best first person combat in a fantasy game had you go into a different stance for casting spells and it worked just fine. i think some people need to step up their game if that is actually an issue for them. maybe they should have it so that you can shoot bows with just one hand as well so that you dont have to unequip your sword.

Like I said, some things were better in Morrowind, some better in Oblivion. Im not going through every point.

You don't have to use both hands to just hold the bow. That's the issue I'm seeing here, that some ignore the fact that there's a difference between holding a weapon and using it. You equip and ready the bow, shoot some arrows, then you ready and use the heal spell before unreadying the spell in order to shoot arrows once more.

Realism and magic don't really have anything to do with one another. Not being able to have your cake and eat it too makes for more character variety. In Oblivion you had no reason not to spam the healing spell you start with. In Skyrim you will have to choose between magic and maximum combat damage instead of settling for easy mode jack of all trades combat.

I agree with your first point. Equiping offensive spells in hand would give your character variety and truly make you a warlock with skill progression, but I still think non-combat spells should not have to be 'hand equiped'. I used Eyes of Eventide all the time for night vision in caves. The mechanic to equip this in a hand would be disastrous. Especially if you can not change weapons when fighting and the spell runs out.

So here is to hoping Bethesda keeps hot key spells like in Oblivion, but modified to only accept defensive/non-combat spells.

I see alot of people have not been following whats going on.

Its NOT about the weapon its about magic. This was a change to magic because of what they want magic to feel like and be like in skyrim.

It requires a physical dedication of the user in the form of one or two hands free AND you cant block at all no matter what else you may have equipped with it.

This was done for the sake of making magic a very different and interesting gameplay choice.

What was wrong with your other thread? There is a new "favorites" menu that is supposed to make swapping through combat styles fast and intuitive. Does that make you feel any better?

I'm actually very excited about this feature. It sounds like it'll make tactically adjusting to certain situations a lot less of a hassle.

This is actually good, I think. It would mean you cant just keep healing yourself constantly during combat. Better challenge

You should be able to heal (but not throw spells) when using a two handed weapon. However, you do it much more slowly than you normally would.

I don't think two-handed weapons are really intended to be used as a mage character's main weapon. I guess you could argue either way about whether this limits or encourages role playing. Anyway, you should still be able to use healing potions while carrying a two-hander, and I'm pretty sure you will be able to block with one. And most characters who specialize in two-handed weapons are likely to specialize in heavy armor also, plus they will probably be putting a lot of their points into health. I just don't see how not being able to cast a healing spell would severely limit your ability to stay alive.

I think it's a bit disappointing. I don't care what's realistic nor will I attempt to associate realism with magic, but what the alternative (being able to cast spells with both hands currently occupied with something other than spells) is is fun, and that's what's important to me. With this new system, it seems as though they are reverting to some halfway point between Morrowind's system and Arena/Daggerfall/Oblivion's cast without switching anything system... more notably the quicker Daggerfall/Oblivion system. I'm not too thrilled by the news as I hated switching anything to cast magic in Morrowind. People tout it as a great, balancing feature, but in reality, it's a repetitive, tedious, back and forth switching that just gets on (mine, at least) one's nerves. Regardless, most of what I've heard, so far, about the new combat system is pleasing, but this one feature is bothering me. I'll have to see it in action before I get a more complete thought on this feature, but I don't think it will be a positive thought. Yes, I see how the old system catered mainly to powerful battlemage-type characters, but that's the type of character I like to play, so of course I'm upset. Instead of what they're doing, why not still allow spells to be equipped in place of weapons and give a strong bonus, of some kind, to those who do such a thing, instead, or some other alternative while still allowing the base spell effects to be casted by those wielding weapons with both arms? There are many ways to balance a game and some are better than others.

They said the shield spell is to protect against magic not melee...

It adds too the tactics of combat. If you use a two-handed you can't heal, just as you can't block while using a weapon-and-spell setup. It stops people from having a character that can do everything at the same time, and gives magic a place in the game on equal foot as combat/stealth.

but the whole tagline Todd likes to use is ~"do anything, be anyone". What if people want to be a battle mage or spell sword who use two handers and magic at the same time without having to switch all the time?
and not being able to block with spell and sword combo svcks too.

It makes combat more challenging. I agree that it would be more effective OB style, but it gives magic a primary role and, with the new usages for magic, for balance.

At a first glance we all want to wield a two handed weapon with only our right hand while holding a tower shield in the left, spitting fireballs with the mouth shooting lazers with our eyes while casting healing by wiggling our toes. But in the long run I think it will be more fun to have to choose your playstyle a bit more carefully, I want to make a warrior with a mace + shield that casts restoration and alteration spells, very much like I had in Oblivion, but I′m pretty content with the thought of just casting my shield and regenerative magic before initiating combat, with luck it will work smoothly and I will hardly not care that I can′t cast while I have my hands full.

And let′s not forget, for those that will Roleplay as Dovahkiin, we will get to shout out certain spells, perhaps there will be a healing dragon shout :)

What if I want to play as a four armed gun-toting arch-demon, with four different weapons in each hand and rocket launcher built into my skull?
If I won't be able to play that, I'll be so disappointed.

One of the main problems in TES was that pure mages always svcked, and Battlemages/Spellswords were the best. Now if you want to play as a successful Battlemage/Spellsword, you either have to use 1-handed weapons or you'll need to be quick with changing weapons.

Or are you not going to accept anything other then your opinion?

Have you been on these forums... ever? No one will accept anyone else's opinion. Or even allow them to have control of their own thread.

I have an idea for spellcasting and two handed weapons ( this is the first time i haven't red the whole thread, so sorry if it happens to be mentioned before ):
What if you could equipt a who handed sword, but have the option to equipt a spell in the other hand ( So the problem is - how can we cast spells if our both hands are taken)
So when you cast a spell you let go of the weapon with one hand and it drags on the ground, because the other hand can not handle the weight.
Basically you could cast spells with the other hand, but you suffer a penalty of reduced movement and not being able to strike a mele attack a little bit before casting and some bit after casting the spell ( think it as delay for dropping the weapon on the ground and another delay when you have to pick it right up) maybe the first delay is unnecessary because you can let go of the weapon almost instanteniously.
That would make it so you could be able to cast spells while two handed and not bother to switch between weapons every time you want to cast spells, because after a few hundred hours of gameplay that gets annoying !

really a good way of doing this, would be to have a perk for 2hers to cast spells but you must stop moving. maybe with higher ranks it just slows you down. this way you can have the hybrid build chars that TES has always had while not betraying this otherwise interesting system.

That would bring a balance issue too the game. If you could cast spells and block with 2-handed weapons, but only block or cast spells with weapon-and-shield or spell-and-shield, the 2-handed battlemage would have more advantages than any other build(that we currently have info about)
