Can heal with spell if you have a two handed weapon? # 2

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:29 am

Creating number 2 for this because post limit was reached on last thread. Below in quotes is what I wrote in the OP of the first thread, and I certainly hope we will be able to heal whether we have a two handed claymore equipped, or shield equipped etc.

"I just got news that you can't heal yourself with a spell if you have a two handed weapon out?? Why?

Why can't they just make it like before where you hold your weapon in one hand while you heal yourself with a spell??

This is horrible news if it is true."

Yeah it's a little bit of a hassle. I guess you'll have to collect potions?

Or get used to swapping weapon loadouts.

Or howl about it until release, then get used to swapping loadouts when Bethesda does it their way anyway. ;)

Hopefully yes but due to how the new system works: NO. I guess everyone should get used to hotkeys

I really dislike the entire idea of being able to spell cast while both hands are busy with anything else.

Realisticly it would be easy. If using a claymore simple hold it with one hand for a couple seconds...

^ This.
I don't think you can. And it is for good reason too. If you want to be a warrior type, it shouldn't be easy for you to cast heal spells.
If you want to heal, use a potion or switch out one of your weapons. A mage type should have perks to having spells only in their hand like quick spell healing, give them that.

As I stated over and over in thread 1: they have given magic a primary role in(and out of) combat so it isn't a secondary playstyle. It was almost impossible too play a pure character of any kind and now they have made that possible. A pure mage or warrior(not including thiefs since they are less affected by this) would always be very weak compared to a battlemage sice the battlemage could exel in both playstyles, at the same time. Why do people have a problem with Bethesda trying too make the game balanced?

I don't like this philosophy at all - it seems to just be classes by another name (ie, the game telling you what a certain type of character absolutely can or can't do, at the expense of integrity and gameplay).

That said, I don't think the actual mechanic is designed to force warriors to never be healers (or archers never to use swords, and so on), but rather for the sake of the control scheme and general balance of item/ability use. A good, fluid system for swapping out item/spell sets will completely remedy the problem in any case.

Sorry... inferring what you are referring to with your clever one word reply is a tad difficult.

Well, it's about balancing really. It would render the one-handed weapon/magic combination useless. When it boils down to it, I'm pretty sure they'll provide some easier ways to change your weapons setup on the fly.

I'm considering going with a Destruction/single handed weapon build for both ranged and melee potential and see where that goes.

I wasn't saying can't do.
A warrior can still do it, but I just think a mage should have an easier time doing it. Looks like this is the system that is in place for Skyrim. Maybe their hotkey is faster for heal spell if they already have a spell in their hand. (ie switching from or to a weapon or shield takes 2-3 seconds and switching magic between magic is .5 seconds) We can agree to disagree.

I'd be in favor of having a third spell slot that can only be occupied by on-self spells, such as healing. It wouldn't take up a hand slot, and would be cast with its own button Oblivion-style. Thus, warriors (including dual-wielders and shield warriors) can have their healing spell and pure mages can wield three spells at once.

Hopefully there's a perk. How hard is it to hold a claymore in one hand for a second to cast X spell?

Couldn't be that hard, they're what, six or eight pounds?

Again, it's for balancing reasons.

As in, it's a video game, not real life (Then again, we can't cast healing spells in real life.)

Exactly, they dont even weigh a lot.

So have a perk, there's balance. you have to take a perk to do it.

I find the whole duel wielding spells thing a gimmick anyway.

The weight is not the point. The point is to differentiate between using 2-handed vs. 1-handed weapons. Plus and minuses for each.

Okay, then to balance that, 1h gets a perk where they do 50% more damage. Oh wait, then what's the point?

You see? It's a video game, just keep it with 1hs....
