Can't Install Mods...

Post » Wed Apr 06, 2011 12:59 pm

I have an Alienware computer, and I HAVE tried using the guide here. For some reason, I have no Oblivion Data folder. This is the first time I have gotten a Windows 7 Computer.

I am completely lost...

I am TRYING to install OOO and MMM. I have Oblivion Mod Manager installed atm, though.

What version of Oblivion do you have? Installed from CD/DVD? Bought from Direct2Drive? Bought from Steam?

The first step for Window 7 is to NOT install Oblivion to the Program Files (x86) folder. Installing OOO+MMM the first time using mods is no easy chore.

Try using the guide I just wrote. It is intended to be detailed but basic enough for new users. http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/walkthroughs/baininstallguide <-- start from step 0 since your installation is bad
I also walked someone through the OOO+MMM install recently: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1083199-martigens-monster-mod-ooo/. Start referencing it when you get to "Step V" to make sure you download the right components and install the right files. The guide is for BAIN installation. The same goes for that thread, so forget about OMODs. The first section of that thread mentions OMODs and OBMM, but that was tried and stopped quickly. Ask questions if you find any of the steps unclear. I am trying to improve the guide for future users everyday.

When you run the install program, there is a point where you should be able to choose where to install Oblivion.

If you went with the default, and didn't change anything, then the game should be installed to "C:/Program Files/Bethesda Softworks/Oblivion" and the Data directory should be "C:/Program Files/Bethesda Softworks/Oblivion/Data"

Unless you have a 64-bit version of Windows 7, in which case it will be "C:/Program Files (x86)/Bethesda Softworks/Oblivion" and "C:/Program Files (x86)/Bethesda Softworks/Oblivion/Data"

Is that any help?

Uninstall OBMM. You will install it during a later step in the guide, and you have to reinstall it because you are moving Oblivion's directory, which it must be installed to.

Where would you recommend installing it?

I recommend installing Oblivion at the top of the HDD, but many install it in the "Documents\My Games" folder. (Create it if it does not exist.) Both options are neat enough. It really does not matter too much beyond being installed outside of the default installation folder.

Does someone else have recommendations?

Edit: I will vote "My Games" this time around.

The "My Documents/My Games/Oblivion" folder is where Oblivion stores the savegames, ini file, and some other important files.

It's probably a bad idea to install the game to that folder.

Just do not install Oblivion to Program Files. Use Kristoffer's path instead: C:\Games\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion

Edit: Are you running with administrator privileges?

Honestly, I am not sure how to do that.

Is your account an administrator account? If it is the only account, then it is.

Follow the guide's instructions carefully. Do not rush to install, or worry about check box colors. It walks you through each step in the order in which things need to be attended.

Hmmm... I extract OOO into the Data Files folder, and when I go to Oblivion Launcher at Data Files, its not there. Uhh?

No, but I found a bug that prevents Bash from launching that might be related. See if the individual has a InstallerTempList.txt file in his Mopy directory. If so, have him delete it.

If BAIN encounters a problem extracting an archive, it is raising the error before deleting that file. Simple fix in code, just move the cleanup before the error is raised.

Do not extract OOO into the data folder. I thought you were following the guide I linked. You are not supposed to manually extract anything. Please, do not manually install mods... Delete that, and read the guide one step-at-a-time. You will get to the installation part, but are things you should do beforehand to avoid mistakes and unnecessary trouble down the road...

Edit: See the above quote.

You're welcome B)

I think I've found the actual bug. Lemme confirm it, then I'll post details.

Edit:
I've confirmed the bug. Transposition typo. Easy to overlook.

Code changes:
Spoiler

In bosh.py, find:
if not str(bashIni.get('Tool Options','sCustom1o2pt')).strip() == '-Option(s)':

and replace it with:
if not str(bashIni.get('Tool Options','sCustom12opt')).strip() == '-Option(s)':

Edit2:
While on the topic of typos, bash_default.ini has a very minor documentation typo:
";sAutoItemCheck: determines whether to automatically check new items in the bashed patch"
where the variable is actually "bAutoItemCheck=False"

Edit3:
Looking at the latest files on sourceforge, it turns out this particular bug is already fixed for 281

Try that fix out. You can open "bosh.py" with a simple text editor. As you can see, the fix should be in for version 281, so you can make these edits yourself or hold out until then.
