Can't learn shout at the end of "The Horn of Jurgen Wind

Post » Sat Dec 17, 2011 12:38 am

My character is unable to learn the words at the end of the quest. The Greybeards just stand around me in the circle and if I try to talk to any of them they just shake their heads. I've left the room, & restarted the xbox and I have no clue how to get past this. I don't have any saves that are far enough back for me to restart the quest. Can anyone please help?! :(

 Don't know to be honest. You should have a few saves, so you can go back if there is a bug.

The only saves I have are the auto-saves and the very beginning of the game on the cart when you're going to get executed. I don't wanna restart from level one :/

Really?! I have about 7 saves, excluding auto saves. Whenever I save, I use the bottom save so I don't go to far back, but I can go a bit back if there is a bug.

Well I honestly didn't expect this to happen at random so I didn't really worry about saving. I've been fine with out saving... Well until now :(

The game auto-saves in 3 different slots. How do you only have the beginning save?

Well where are they? I only have a few auto saves from when I've fast traveled or opened a building door. And then the beginning of the game.

I only have 4 save options. 3 are auto saves but not far enough back to restart the quest and the next one is the beginning of the game.

Im sorry you experience this bug :(
First rule for a TES game: Save often, save in different slots.

For the best performance, disable all autosaves, as they increase loading times and contribute to savegame bloating.

You could try staying away from the Greybeards for an ingame month + a day. The cell they are in should have reset by then, maybe that will help.
But Im not sure, sorry.

If you have an autosave from before you entered the Greybeard temple and experienced the bug, that might help.

So are you saying if I wait 24 hours 30 times in the game they should reset in someway and I might be able to learn the words?

Really, the autosaving thing you mentioned will it have a big effect on loading time and save game size? I have the 3 autosave slots, but I don't really use them tbh.

Maybe.
A cell does reset if you do not visit it for over an in-game month.
If you have played Oblivion youll remember that dungeons in there would reset after 3 game days + 1 hour.
If you entered the dungeon before that time was up, the clock would start from zero again, and it would be 3 days + 1 hour from then on.

Skyrim has a similar system except that the reset time is at least one month.

You can try if this works, but there is no guarantee.
The best option is to reload a save from before you experienced the bug, Im afraid.

Good luck :)

Edit: Autosaves are a major contributor to long loading times and savegame bloating.
For the best performance, disable them all and get used to saving manually and regularly, and in different slots.
Also, do not overwrite saves, but delete the oldest and make a save in a new slot.

Thank you I'm going to try that :) but my only save I could use is starting from level 1 -_- and I'm level 20 with 78 smithing and great armor and weapons I would HATE to restart.

You really must save consistently, but the bug might have just started when you went to see the Graybeards, do you have an auto-save from when you left the dungeon? (Or before fast-traveling)

Sad to say but I don't because I was honestly getting really pissed I fast traveled back and forth multiple times trying to see if there was something I missed. I screwed myself :'(

It's Wulfgar you need to speak to if you want to get the word at the end of that quest, have you tried speaking to him after you give the horn to Arngeir?

That is quite the predicament, you could try going into the room, and waiting at hour, that seems to fix quite a few quest-related bugs. If that doesn't work... you may be out of luck :/

Yes when I interact with him he bows his head and nothing happens the words are on the floor and my character won't learn/absorb them. And I can't continue with the main quest if I don't learn the words.

That is odd then if you've got the word on the floor already, usually you need to stand near it and then it automatically learns for you, I'm guessing you've walked all over the word and tried different angles so I'm at a loss I'm afraid.

Yes everything. I even stared at the words for a total of 15 minutes. This is some [censored] :(

I have the solution to the, Skyrim Greybeards - The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller. Bug involving the Untalkative wulfgar. After my second to last attempt involed me killing half the greybeards in anger. I died respawned on the autosave and walked over to arnier (or whatever his name is) to kill him (i was v. angry) Just like the previous wind quest you have to go near the gates that arneir stands by till you hear them open then all the greybeards start walking to the temple. Bug solved !!!! I will watch this post to help people if they require it. I am so relieved I hope this works for you too! :goodjob:

For one this belongs in the bugs section. Second, you really should save more often to avoid stuff like this. You on PC? You can advance via console commands.
