I helped hardin dethrone elder mcnamara and should still be able to leave the bunker freely like I have been but now when I attempt to exit the bunker it says I require a key. Even the waypoint on my pipboy says to exit through this door. Not really sure but I think there is a game glitch.. Thx in advance for the help.

apparently you have to pickpocket brother Ramos. He has the key on him after you dethrone and I didn't lose karma.
