She sure can. Give her some better armor, some better weapons and use Healing Hands on her, which also raises your Restoration skill and she'll be around for a very long time. I'm not sure about high levels but I'm up to Level 29 and she's still with me.

If shes getting "2-shotted" she is probably still set to her skills and health levels when you first got her. (Her stats dont level with you.) Have a read at some of the sections on this page:

I think they can only die by your hand, so just don't whack her over the head with your mace and she'll be around forever.

Followers will die but only if:
- take massive damage in one hit
- continues to take damage after they cower, usually from aoe-s

Companions won't die if you fus ro dah them off mountains, no matter how high, they just get up.
When taking too much damage, companions, like all npcs, will just cower and then the enemy will look for other targets, usually you.

This is a confusing topic. The guide book says that they do level with you (at least their primary skills do - ex Onmund - Heavy/Destr/Illus/OneHand), and the info on the link you provided has contradictory comments.

I know that Aranea began casting chain lightning at a certain point, where previously she did not. Not sure how much can be inferred from this.

I have accidentally killed my followers a couple of times. I have also seen them killed by others.

Simple answer as stated above:

They will die if they take more damage while down.

Also note that Companions never level up or increase skill. So if you get Lydia at the beginning of the game (Which you probably did) she will never become any better. She will stay the same through the whole game, so I suggest you find a new follower.

I have heard this many times. Is there a good source that explains this? Or is it just word of mouth?

Note that Falmer keeps attacking downed characters. They killed my Lydia, underneath Markarth.

Actually, they do level up with the character but only in terms of Health/Magicka. They never increase their skills.

The guide book says otherwise. It says that they do level up their primary skills. The guide book may be wrong, however. Do you have a source?

Thanks for the link. I am pretty sure I read different in the guide book, though. I am at work now, so I can't check it... I will look it up when I get home. Frustrating when the guide book is wrong, but good to know anyway.

There is a guide book already? I never really need it, I just really like to see what it says about certain things. Before I had internet I had to use the Morrowind guide book all the time.

Mine died last week, she finally met her maker at the hands of 3 Trolls and 2 bears :( I have had to reload a number of saves to get her back this time I let her go forever it was a sad moment! Now I am running around with that mage girl from the dark tower, she has some nice magic but tends to hit me in the back a fair bit!

I've had to reload and bring her back 4 times. This last run we did through the cave she ran by me and right off a cliff. I decided if she was dead again I was done with her. But further down the switch back she was killin things ? She some how survived the fall which is more than I can say for my dog !! Him I never found again ??

Not Dark Brotherhood Initiate for some reason, wanted to:
Spoiler
sacrifice one of them for the Boethia quest. But they are essential, so i had to take a legit follower, i took a merc instead.

This was very confusing, people on there saying they do level, people saying they don't, people saying that some of them leveled and some didn't, and everything in between - if you read the whole article.

Me, I'm using common sense, I'm lvl 31 and I fight giants with Lydia and she doesn't die. Sure, she will drop to a knee when surrounded by 3 bandit marauders but c'mon. I have her in Ebony and Dwarven armor and she's doin pretty fine. common sense says she levels at least somewhat.

EDIT: sorry, as to dieing.... 99% of the time my Lydia has died as been because I accidentally whacked her, but I have seen her die from excessive spell damage from npc casters.

Yeah, I got the guide book at my local game store since it was heavily discounted because I pre-ordered the game. Its 655 pages. :D

The guide book says:

Skills: All Followers have a specific set of favored skills, which improve as their level increases. Unlike your character, Followers do not become better at the skills they use - no matter how you try to force Morcurio (a mage) to be a greatsword-wielding warrior, he'll always be better with magic. Make sure to select a follower hwose skill set meets your needs.

Levels: Most Followers automatically level up when you do, so there's no need to worry about a Follower 'falling behind' if you go off and adventure on your own, or want to work with someone else for a while.

Hope I don't get in trouble for quoting from the guide book....

The two parts in bold almost seem contradictory. But I think the second bold just means that unlike how it is for me, it isn't the use of a skill that improves it for the follower, but rather it is their favored set of skills that improves independent of which skills they use the most.

I wonder where the info posted on UESP.NET is coming from. If it is testing, then the guide book must be wrong.
