So can I make my guy left handed?

Post » Sat May 14, 2011 8:00 pm

Yeah unfortunately it's still that way in some places. The Boy Scouts of America tried to tell my nephews left handed people can't be good people and tried to change them.

Nay, everyone needs to be right handed because it's normal.

EDIT:

during medieval times, fighting with yr left hand was a symbol of fighting for the devil.

thats america though. firstly they be stupid by putting the redundant word "boy" in front of scout despite the fact that the english scout organisation was for boys and not girls. therefore they made the name sound silly because the term "boy" sounds childish and scouts is for early teens...

also athiests arent evil. athiests are logical just not evil and have nothing to do with the thread, you naughty boy

anyways- if you watch the havok tech demo they say it is easy to mirror animations around. so it should be ok

Okay I removed the reference to other types of bigotry they tried to teach my nephews, but the main point is that yes sadly there is real discrimination against left handed people, and it used to be far worse than it is today.

Man that would make my day. I really hope i can put a shield in my right hand and a sword in my left. If i was in a fight it would feel more natural for me to use my left hand. My fingers crossed that this is included.

I'm left handed and I always wondered why in EVERY single game I ever played EVERYONE was right handed. I'm looking forward to it if I can. But it would take getting used too

Hmm, good question. I would have thought that characters only get penalties for wielding to weapons at the same time, and in that case for both weapons. That's how I would have done it.

On the other hand (ahaha), even if you equip your sword in the left hand, that doesn't make you a lefty yet... there are other animations in the game, and they will all be right-handed animations. For example, a character who picks a lock will most likely do so by equipping the lockpick in the right hand, and maybe a probe in the left hand or whatever. Or for two-handed weapons: You can't just equip that weapon in the other hand, it will always show the animation that is meant for right-handed characters. (Although I'm currently not sure which one that would be - left hand higher than the right one, or other way around?)

So... point is, even IF there is no penalty to holding a weapon in the left hand, the game still won't allow you to play a left-handed character UNLESS there's a specific option somewhere that mirrors all the animations.

during medieval times, fighting with yr left hand was a symbol of fighting for the devil.

Nice.

Wouldn't that be something if that was an option in character creation?

They may end up making that a choice at the beginning of the game (during character creation), and a perk could be one that allows you to be ambidexterous. I think that'd be pretty cool.

This. I was actually going to start a thread on this exact topic a few days back. :P

Left handed doesn't really matter for me but I LOVE the idea of strong arm and weak arm. Especially with locational damage. Take a big blow to your right arm and you would be forced to use your left sort of a thing. With two handed weapons you would have to switch to your weak arm with your strong supporting. Very cool idea, I hope they include a system like this.

There used to be left handed elves....they were executed and banished from summerset isle.... so no

Which is unfortunate, seeing as TESV:Skyrim is set in the Summerset Isles.

Hell yeah. I wanna play a guy who is rumored to be a fighter of the devil! With my supreme left-handed fencing skills, my reliable rapier and my twirly moustache I'll show those brutish Nords how you win a duel in an elegant manner.

(How else would a fighter of the devil look like.)

It would be great if you could choose a dominate hand, but I doubt it will happen. We will be ambidextreous most likely and able to use either hand and neither one be dominate.

Not ever ones hand are 'no' weaker than each other one is just more presise I don't think a strong/ weak hand would be that a propreate but at least you can have your bow on your left hand...maybe haven't seen a bow in the right hand or a 2hand melée on the left side you may only get to choose with single handed combos.

Strong or weak arm doesn't really refer to strenght. The term is also used in firearm qualifications, where strength doesn't really matter...

I see games where it seems being left handed is possible, but I get an extreme damage penalty for having it equipped in the off hand. I'd love to see Skyrim be the first rpg that allows me to have a left handed character.

Hell yeah!!! I'm left handed! Those eleven people who voted right handed only are mean!!!

For those who feel frustrated for being left handed: go practice martial arts.

However, in American there are also Girl Scouts. And, they have age groups from young children all the way up through high school.

Anyway, back on topic.

I kind of hope that you "Handedness" is determined dynamically. So, during the first introduction part of the game, you use a weapon in your left hand more than your right, you become left handed. It would then still be possible to use the right hand for attacking, but you would get a penalty until you get used to using the right hand. Unless of course you have the ambidextrous perk, though it would mean ambidextrous should be a rather low level perk.

Either the above would work, or just no penalties based on which hand your weapon is in.

Glad to see this post getting so much attention, I knew people liked the idea. And yes, I made the second option sarcastically. I knew it happened and thought it would be funny to see how many anti left handers we had on Bethesda forums:P

But seriously, I do like what I'm hearing. I am not, however, in support of having our characters be ambidextrous all the time. Honestly, if I trained with a sword I would use my dominant hand. Because of this I would obviously have less skill using a sword in my right hand. There's nothing wrong with having the off hand be svcky, I'm just so damn sick of that off hand always being the left hand. But I love the ambidextrous perk idea, improving the skill with your off hand. Obviously dual wielding comes with a few problems to begin with, but with a perk things would improve. I just want to have a shield in my right had and attack with my left. So yes Bethesda, do this please. We left handers are people too.
