Can MGE andor MGEXE be run on a portable install of Morrowin

I have set up an archive so that I can run multiple installs of Morrowind. These installs don't require Morrowind registry keys.

Yacoby's Wryemash standalone works just fine in this setup since I can specify the directory paths it needs. MGEgui.exe and MGEXEgui.exe both throw up an error about being unable to locate Morrowind registry keys. Is there a workaround? Do I have to have at least one complete install for these programs to work correctly?

I hav e run into this problem in the past. BSAReg always wants to unpack to the path in the registry and isn't customizable.

Really, do these programs *have* to be dependent on the windows registry entries when the game itself isn't?

EDIT: Nevermind. After I ran the game from Morrowind.exe (again) in one folder, all versions of MGEgui worked again. Still, why did it work this way?

All I remember is that Hrnchamd said that the copies would always refer back to wherever the original installation took place and that, with multiple game folders, I would need to start the morrowind.exe and morrowindlauncher.exe that was in the folder of the copy I wanted to play. IIRC, he said it was a hard-wired code. You can test this by setting up two copies with different mods and playing each starting one time from the .exe inside the game folder and the next time using a desktop icon linked to the copy you're testing. I don't know if this is the same reason that I have trouble with mgexegui - it seems like regardless of which copy I run it from, changes are applied to the .ini file in all my folders, even those that don't have MGE XE installed. I could be misremembering this because it's been awhile since I looked at that particular problem.

Hmm, I haven't had that problem, but I understand well enough what you're saying.

The desktop icon thing is something I just don't use anymore. A long time ago it was an issue running something from a shortcut, so I just stopped doing it. It didn't really make any sense with multiple installs either. Now, I just put a shortcut to the correct directory on my desktop and run the game directly from the morrowind.exe within that folder. So far, I have had no problems with MGE or MGEXE writing settings to the correct .ini; I may never have to install Morrowind again.
