Can't plaay game in HDR

Post » Thu Sep 08, 2011 10:50 am

Hey,

I am pretty new to PC gaming, so I apologize if I confuse anyone!

I purchased a used copy of Oblivion GOTY edition and installed it on my PC last night. My ultimate goal is to play with Mods. I am not new to Oblivion as I played a ton of it on my Xbox. Moving to PC gaming for the mods.

I got the game running rather easily, however, I cannot play it with HDR. I can play with Bloom + AA x8 at the highest resolution, no problem. But when I try to play with HDR I get a commmon problem a lot of people seem to get, I can see the HUD, but the game world is entirely black. Please note, I am not trying to play with HDR and AA, just HDR alone, and I get the black screen, but can see the HUD. Everything is fine until I get into the game. The game is working as I can tell my avatar is running around and interacting with the world, sound is working, but I can't see anything.

It's a vanilla version, never modded, GOTY edition.

Here are the specs on my PC:

i3 2120 Intel Processor 3.30 GHz - CPU
NVIDIA GeForce 560 - GPU (manufactured by ASUS - NOT the Ti version)
8 Gb Ram
Windows 7 x64-bit.

I have dug around on the internet for similar problems and I have read that people with NVIDIA cards have trouble running HDR + AA and need to force it though the control panel. However, this isn't similar to my problem is I am trying to do it by disabling AA and enabling HDR.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

could try one of the nvidia blackscreen fix mods, or, the tweak in wrye bash. Although, I would have thought Nvidia would have fixed that by now..... guess not huh??

Well, they don't all do it. I've run Oblivion on four different nvidia cards, and never saw anything like this problem. I have HDR set in the OB options, and AA forced by nvidia software, with no issues.

cruz7911: Is the nvidia control panel correctly set, to let Oblivion control the settings?

glargg: I haven't tried that yet. Frankly, I am so new to PC gaming that I haven't really tried anything and thought I would come to the forums in hopes of being pointed int he right direction. I saw a tutorial on youtube on how to do that, I'll give it a go when I get home from work.

Can you expand on what exactly I am supposed to adjust on the control panel to let Oblivion control the settings?

I am not sure if it makes any difference, but the video card I have is technically called VGA ASUS|ENGTX560 DCII OC/2DI/1GD5. However, it get's recognized as NVIDIA 560 on most software applications. I simply assumed that asus uses same tech. as the NVIDIA one. But since I am the newb, I thought I would clarify as to not confuse the wise.

Assuming you're not planning to force AA, in the 3D Settings section, under "Adjust image settings with preview," the button that says "Let the 3D application decide" would be checked. This, unless you're planning to use the Advanced settings section.

Your card is indeed a GTX 560. I'm using a different brand of the same card, and it works fine.

Glargg: that's good to hear. I've wanted to get into PC Gaming for a long time and finally decided to pull the trigger. Here's to hoping it works for SKYRIM!

I'll give it a go when I get home, ultimately I will probably want to try and get AA to work with HDR, can you think of a work around for that?
