I can't play Morrowind on the PC. I prefer the Xbox. Can any

Post » Fri Sep 25, 2009 6:41 pm

I have been playing Morroiwnd on the Xbox for about 4 years. I gave up on it afterwards and decided to play again. It was on xbox and then gave up again. Just playing too much needed breaks is why I quit. So now coming back again, finally got a computer that could play it and Oblivion. I installed a few mods as well. Now here is the kicker. I am not enjoying the experiance. Everything seems so slow. Yes I know the characters move slow, it is slow because I am using MGE as well. But this is not bugging me, I can handle the slowness. But what bothers me, is because I tried using a controller to play Morrowind on my laptop.

I just can't get use to the keyboard and mouse. I prefer the controler. I did as people have suggested on the forums here. I got Xpadder so I can use the controller as a mouse. Finally configured everythign to the way I can play it. No my problem is, I just don't like the layout, or I mean the way it plays. I prefer how the xbox is.

For example, I have loads of flowers and potions I want to unload so I am not over encumbered. So I either try to sell them or put them in a crate or box, I find it so slow and painfull on the PC. I click on it, then I have to move the cursor to how many and hten move them to the box or crate. It just seems so much faster when I do it on the xbox. I have spent like 1/2 hour just moving things and this makes a very boring game. Also I am not use to combat, agian I guess I am so use to the xbox.

Well I found my GotY disk, and about to start a new game on the Xbox. Yes graphics are not as nice, no mods, but I want my gameplay fun back. I am missing this on the PC. So before I give up on PC version, I thought I would ask for help to see if I am missing anything that I can do. So is there mods that can give me the console experiance to the PC version? By that by when I click on something I don't have to scroll to how many then click on the container where I want it to go, that it goes automatically in there. If there is not a mod, am I missing something then? Is there something I can do then?

I just find I have more fun on the xbox than the PC. This is not about what is better so please now VS battles. Maybe it's becasue I am so use to consoles, that PC is a foreign experiance for me.

It's just when I use the controller for the PC it doesn't feel the same at all like on the console. So how can I program the PC so it acts like Xbox version? When using the controller without xpadder, there is no way I can move the cursor when in inventory mode. With xpadder, I can do this. Mouse cursor moves so slow, but I can accept that. Is there a way to get how the Xbox version to the PC. If not, what can I do to make my experiance more enjoyable.

I'm exactly the opposite Davor, I would be lost with an Xbox controller, so I really don't know what I could say to help; not having the Xbox experience to compare it to. I can say this, and I hope it helps, but you may already realize it: When you are presented with the quantity click box, if you simply want to move everything, just hit the space bar or the equivalent on your controller if there is one. Hitting the space bar circumvents the need to use the mouse with that function. But if you ever want to move lets say 50 out of 100 arrows, you do have to use the mouse to select the quantity, and I don't know of any way around it. I wish I could be of more help.....

I didn't know about the Spacebar. I will have to programme that into the controller. Thank you very much, that may help. I will try it out.

Try an Nostromo N52 controller.

Also, the most recent Morrowind Code Patch changes the behavior of selling stacks a bit...removes most of the multiple movements.

People, did you miss my post? shift clicking on a stack bypasses the quantity window completely and treats it as 1 item.

That is wierd. I did not see your post when I last posted. I will do as suggested as well thank you.

I don't want to buy a new controller. If I do, it would be a wired 360PC controller. I will look into the N52. Thanks.

If you want to increase the mouse (or other controler's) speed in the menu you could use 'morrowind FPS optimizer'.

the newest version of morrowind code patch beta adds the option of making the shift-click the default (so that shift-click now is the "how many do you want?"-option)

check it out http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1163185-repairing-the-cogs-of-morrowind-24/page__st__60, download is http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=26348 (maybe it's just the added beta files... just in case, the last official release is http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19510)

sometimes the interface bugs me as well. didn't ever play in on the xbox, though.
some stuff taken care of by the http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=utilities.detail&id=22 includes the "turbo haggle" option, allowing to speed up money amount selection exponentially, and increasing mouse speed within game dialogs, which is nice for people with e.g. 1920x1200 pixel monitors (me :D).

not sure whether you know the stuff already, but http://knotstheinane.blogspot.com/p/morrowind-modding-guide.html, apart from being a great guide about beautifying the game, has some tips for game controllers at the bottom of the page.

I would like to thank everyone here. I tried playing on the 360, but the map glitch is really bugging me. I have tried the "shift" and YES that does help alot.

@ TrueRevan I am checking out those links you gave me. I thought I have the Morrowind Code patch, how can I tell if I have it? It's been a while since I played, I forget what I have installed. I will check out this FPS Optimizer.

Thank you again, you All have helped me make the PC experiance more enjoyable.

*edit* Yes I have the Morrowind Code patch, just checked the Data Files. Is thre a way I can change it after the fact?

Wow I didn't know about this site. It looks really beautiful. I just spent over 3 horus installing the game, patches and mods. I don't want to start all over again. Do I have to start all over again, or can I just install this and will still get the nice graphics.

yes, of course. the codepatch should have generated a backup of your morrowind.exe
you can just restore the backup or hit "uninstall all" or so in the codepatch installation window.
then just replace the files in your installation with the files from the beta release (not at windows pc right now, so my guess would be the mcpatch-folder or so in your morrowind folder, but not 100% sure).
then run the codepatch-installer again and you should see a few more options. there's still work going on with morrowind codepatch, so i check regularly for updates. it's really amazing, i think :)

me neither until i stumbled upon it by accident, browsing planetelderscrolls mods and there was a link in some comment ;)
and i spent some time there as well, not applying all the changes, but some of them.

as i pointed out somewhere else lately:
only 3 hours? =)
i'm modding my morrowind for over four months now and there's no definite perfect version. i always find something new to replace, alter, adjust, etc.
ok, i understand that some people just want to install stuff, be done with it, and play.
but... it can be very rewarding as well to shape the game constantly (and i DO play it, of course).
for an easy answer to your question:
what do you mean by "can i just install this"?
the guide contains links to many mods. some of them are texture replacers, some of them are .esps, some of them are third-party-software like the mcp or morrowind graphics extender.
textures override each other (obviously), .esps can conflict (more on that elsewhere), which shouldn't scare you to try things out (they also can be removed).
i don't know about graphics extender, as i can't use it with my crap machine.

oh... or were you talking about the controller setup? (didn't really look into it, i don't even have a game controller...)
can't provide an answer there...

well, i know the feeling of being overwhelmed by the size of the modding universe. but then again, that's what the forums are for, right? :) ask people, try stuff out, keep what you like. anything that makes your game more fun

That's right, that is what these forums are for. I just finally got use to my controller scheme, but I think the one you pointed out is better. I just have to get use to this, hopefully it's soon.

I screwed up my game. LOL, I am reinstalling it and starting from scratch. If this doesn't work, at least I made a back up copy that I know does work. At least this way, I will know what what I have again. I guess between installing Morrowind and Oblivon mods at the same time, I forget what is what. Wish me luck that it works, because I encountered an error and it stopped working.

Ok, it's 4am now, I spent over 12 hours trying to install mods. While frustrating, I do hope and pray that these settings will last and not cause me any more troubles. I am too tried, but at least I know it running. I use the shift key and Great, I don't have to scroll through them I can put them in another container right away. Sadly I didn't see the check box to allow this in the code patch, but no big deal, I think I like it better this way.

Also the link you gave me Trueraven, I did a clean install after fudging up my other save, and as I said after 12 hours of tweaking the game runs so much faster and smoother. It could be a different mod I am using, not sure, but I am enjoying the PC experiance now.

Still have to get use to the controller I have. I wish I had a 360 controller but that can wait for another day or year. I iwll use what I have and be happy. :D

So once again, I want to thank everyone who helped me enjoy the PC experiance.

Now I just have to install the official plug-ins from Bethesda. Thing is, how do I get there? When ever I do elderscrolls.com, I get Skyrim. I want Morrowind, anyone have a link to where I want to go?

Thank you all again.

Ok, it's 4am now, I spent over 12 hours trying to install mods.

yepp, i remember well following the instructions of the first guide i read about morrowind: http://morrowind2009.wordpress.com/
it's good to read several guides, though, i can also recommend BTB's http://btb2.free.fr/morrowind.html
they're great to get modding started :)

I use the shift key and Great, I don't have to scroll through them I can put them in another container right away. Sadly I didn't see the check box to allow this in the code patch, but no big deal, I think I like it better this way.

yes, i like it, too. i was like "oh, yes!!!" when i read that :) so much better...
hm... strange with the checkbox. can't check right now (office pc again)

I am enjoying the PC experiance now.

that's good to hear :foodndrink:

Now I just have to install the official plug-ins from Bethesda. Thing is, how do I get there? When ever I do elderscrolls.com, I get Skyrim. I want Morrowind, anyone have a link to where I want to go?

for area effect arrows i recommend BTB's efforts to balance them (found in the modlist above).
on his site there is also a link to the firemoth plugin (links to http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=1163 again).
maybe look for them at pes. the adamantium armor plugin is ignorable since you get adamantium armor in mournhold (and as far as i know there are the meshes and textures included in this plugin, overwriting the textures from darknut, for example)
never bothered to try out bittercoast sounds or the female armor plugins from bethesda, either
but, look for them and pick the ones you like, as always

All the officials are at PES.

Be wary of them. Make sure you are installing with Wrye Mash so you can alter the install order since installing them last can cause issues (one of which is mentioned above...adamantium conflicts). You also need to clean the official ones as many of them have the evil GMSTs that can really ruin your day eventually.

If both of these are glazing your eyes over....the install order tutorial I wrote in the mods forum can guide you as far as install order and making sure what you install doesn't overwrite what you want. Cleaning is done with TesTool...if you aren't doing this, read up on it. Its not terribly important these days, as mod writers are far more cognizant of the issues, but most mods older than 2006 (especially the Bethesda ones) you probably should clean.

Be happy you only spent one day installing mods. It took me over a week of working 3-4 hours nightly to get my game back to the way I want it when I had a drive failure.

I think they're all ignorable. If they didn't have the imprimatur of "Bethesda" on them nobody would give any of of them a second thought. All of them are full of dirty references. Seige of Firemoth in particular has given players error messages for years. It's badly balanced when it does work. Frankly, I can't think of a single one of them that is better than, say, any of the top 500 community-made mods at PES.

Cleaning is done with TesTool

you are so right, i completely forgot about the tools. yepp, they're essential

I think they're all ignorable.

yeah, well, i guess so.
that's why i'm only running the BTB-i-fied area effect arrows, that one's now clean and balanced (more or less)

and, ofcourse the list of community-mods better than bethesda's is a very long one.

I don't have Wrye Mash yet. I will get them soon. So when I get it, what do I do with it? Last time I had it, it looked so complicated, and I stayed away from using it not to screw everything up I had.
I will read up on it, and if I am stuck, I will come back asking for help LOL.

Return to III - Morrowind
