Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 3:12 pm

why cant i help end the world?

why cant i burn villages down

why doesnt every quest have an alternate evil path?

why cant i join factions such as bandits, necromancers and daedra worshipers?

why do i have to help pathetic charecters- why cant i just torture them for the information i want- or simply kill them?

why cant i lead armys into citys?

TES has a set lore. If you wanna make more meaningful decisions then Fallout would be better suited.

Depends. :P

Daggerfall allows you, at the end, to betray the Emperor, help Mannimarco, help one of the three main kingdoms or even keep what everyone wants for yourself.

In Morrowind, while you sadly can't join Dagoth Ur when he asks you to, there's another way of obtaining artifact that allows you to use Kagrenac's Tools to kill Dagoth Ur. It's more of a moral gray choice, but it's a nice, partially hidden, way to finish the main quest.

You are a mortal being. Is ending the world really in your best interest?

yeah Dagoth Ur almost got me to side with him because I felt bad for his betrayal but at the end of each game I doubt players will be able to alter the outcome significantly. Like I doubt Alduin can simply be left to run amok and eat Nirn

You could always play as a bad guy. Just not THE bad guy. I mean, after I've finished a game completely with a character, I go on a murderous rampage. In the end I killed more people than the bad guy ever did.

Yeah, but look what they had to do to the lore to clean that up. :P

Honestly, I think a villainous playthrough would be totally compatible with the main quest, as much as we know about it. I can't RULE THE WORLD if Alduin blows it up first.

Necromancy would still be cool, though.

Well we know you can kill main quest characters. But whether you can actually join the other side... Well, that'd be hard to explain. I don't think Bethesda can pull off another time paradox.

I have to say the Warp in the West was very creative, however they can only use it one time.

You can't have alternate paths to a great degree...because put bluntly this is not knights of the old republic, you do have a purpose in the game... the main decision you can make is when you decide to fulfill that purpose. It's been predetermined by the elder scrolls so you really can't change it.

Heh indeed. But it was a great way of killing Daggerfall's character, if he did use it for himself that is. :D

But being able to have more "bad" or "evil" guilds would be nice. Not only the Dark Brotherhood or, to some extent, the Thieves Guild. Or at leasts, guilds that are considered "bad" by the rest of the world, like the poor Necros.

This said, I did love playing the "evil" side of Bloodmoon by being one of Hircine's servant. It was satisfying to get rid of some major characters on Solstheim.

You know, it's entirely possible that killing Alduin would cause another Dragon Break, so they could use it again!

In all seriousness, you're obviously going to be able to be a dike. But in most cases that's not quite the same as being the villain. You know what I think would make all the difference? If the game responded to your villainy by sending plucky bands of heroes to stop you. Surely Radiant Story can handle such a thing! Make it so, Bethesda!

... Why is the FBI at your doorstep, asking your mum if you are feeling angry these days ? :P

Seriously, though, agreed. :D Not that I especially want to torture people, but alternate paths are always good : loved the Raven Rock quest in Bloodmoon.

I would so find it awesome if the Dragonborn turned out to be a key character, that the Greybeards and the dragons would be vying for, leaving you to decide the fate of the land...

Also, I need to be able to monologue about my evil plan to the plucky bands of heroes while I have them at my mercy. This is very important.

I understand why we be a pure "bad guy" where we actually help bring about the perceived "end of the world," such as by helping the dragons in Skyrim or joining forces with Dagon in Oblivion. It would conflict with the story as written in the history of the games, and any outcomes would have to be accounted for, such as after Daggerfall.

However, I would imagine if I truly did want to want to actually be an antagonist, there should be an option to transfer the responsibility of the hero to an NPC, or some other outcome, where the game ends as it would, but not because of us.

I think modern day RPG's have skewed the definition of a hero. I think the proper term that games like Mass Effect, Fable 3 and Dragon Age are looking for is the term Villain.

You don't need to be the antagonist to be considered a villain, you know. :P

In the Elderscrolls games, you've always been portrayed as a hero -- someone who fights for a cause and a valiant and noble one for that matter. Despite the amount of freedom to steal, kill and generally tick people off, the quests set out for you write your character off as more or less of a hero.

Keep these thoughts in mind if you're not presented with the opportunity to play a villain in Skyrim.

So give us a canon path, but allow us to deviate from it. Would that really be so bad?

If you are truly evil, wouldn't it be better to see the world constantly burn, and it's people suffering endlessly? Save the world, so you can punish it yourself.

No. You cannot help destroy the world. Plain and simple...because you couldn't go on and play after the main quest in great Elder Scrolls fashion. Lol.

Seriously, though, I do wish more RPGs offered this idea. Only that, my idea would be that you kill the final boss at the end...halting the end of the world...only to subject Tamriel's people to your Thousand Year Reign! HAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!

Ah, then we need white fluffy cats and monocles too. Hmmm, cool volcano island lair. With minions.

Quick, to the mod-mobile !
