Can we please get "Component View" in our workshops?

Post » Sat Feb 20, 2016 4:53 pm

I find the Component View really handy in my inventory, and love that they added that. However, it would be even more helpful if this view existed in our workshops, which I do most of my crafting. I'm not sure if this was an oversight, but I would really welcome this minor tweak to the interface.

This is why I scrap all my junk.

How long does that take? Seems like it would be very tedious.

I do this. Only takes a few seconds. Just throw it all on the ground and click E and R on each one.

Agree. It would be also nice to see componets and weight when you pick up items. There are far to many junk items to remember all this. In the beginning of the game I spent loads of time checking what items I need to collect for copper. I had created a list and adjusted it to the wall in front of my PC :)

I've been scrapping it that way since release, and not because I thought it was glitched. Even with my carry weight maxed with junk, it probably takes me less than 20 seconds to scrap it all. My workshop lists nothing but crafting components.

I would like this feature too!

In the meantime you can take all the junk into your inventory, click the junk tab on your PIP boy and select the component view. This tells you how much of each item you have. Then just open the workbench back up and select store all junk.

Easier then manually scrapping everything. I would like to have a scrap all junk button!

Hey, that's a good idea (taking all my junk out of my workshop bench, switching to component view, then dumping it all back)! I'd probably rather do this than spend time scrapping everything just because they forgot to include this view in the workshop bench.

I love that we have that ability on our characters, so it's a little weird to me that we can't just see that in our workshop bench too, where it would be equally (if not more) helpful. They obviously already have the code figured out, so it probably would be a pretty minor thing to add, and would be really helpful.

Vagabond, you're on a roll today (i liked your thread about grouping/locking outfits). I agree with this suggestion, too! Seems like it would have been so easy to do, too. I wonder why they didn't?

Well, my max carry weight is 380 and my standard gear weighs 106. Assuming I only pick up junk; that's 274 weight worth of junk.

Between dropping them on the ground and going through the process of scrapping 'em all I would estimate about 40 seconds. I don't rush through it, but I am not slow as molasses either.

Someone should create a "Junk Compactor" mod (if one doesn't already exist) that would allow you to store all junk in it (by simply interacting with it), press a button and have the resulting components automatically delivered to the Workshop of the current Settlement you are in. Since it is a machine with moving parts, it should probably require one power to operate. Optionally, you could get a menu to direct the resulting components (from the compacted Junk) to any Settlement you have already unlocked. If you know a Settlement is running low on Steel and you will need Steel, you could direct the Steel to that Settlement from Sanctuary Hills or any other Settlement without having to rely on setting up Supply lines via the Local Leader perk.

Perhaps (and I don't know how to mod or if this would even be possible) the "Junk Compactor" could even be a portable device weighing very little (either be self powered or operate on Fusion cores, but the Cores would last for a long time before needing to be replaced) and combine the Workshop itself, allowing you to essentially scrap items in the open world environment outside of the Settlements that exist in the game. The Junk Compactor would have a medium radius and you could move just like you can in Settlements and scrap items within that radius. With all the trees in the world, you would never have to worry about running out of wood. There would, of course, have to be some limitations to what could / could not be scrapped. An example of something that would probably work okay is the destroyed car and the tire on the Road between Sanctuary and the Red Rocket Station. From what I understand, there are mods on PC that allow PC players to scrap or at least remove unwanted (eye sore) items from the game world. Unfortunately, since I play Fallout 4 on Xbox One I will have to wait for the eventual release of mods on Consoles.

I am sure someone will do this once the GECK comes out. A really simple script, just hard to do with the tools we have.

BUT, lets face it - this really needs to be part of the standard game! Trying to run settlements without Local Leader and Supply lines is a bear. TEDIOUS! Sometimes I wonder if the local leader stuff was going to be non perk related and they just kind of threw it together at the last minute. Settlements flow a lot better with supply lines and local leader.
