Can we please play after the game is complete?

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 12:14 am

People keep talking about the MQ Ending as if it deletes your saves, or erases the game from your Steam account. The only difference between "keep playing from a save just before the Grand Finale" and "keep playing after the Grand Finale" is if they actually altered the world with the effects of said Grand Finale. So all the stuff you just laid out - "tons of lore, NPCs, quests...beautiful land"? None of that is erased and destroyed by the MQ daring to End the game. None of it.

The question of whether they would or could make a bunch of post-Finale changes to the world is a separate issue. For one, it depends on how large an event the Finale is, and whether they'd bother to spend the dev time on it. They certainly didn't in Oblivion & Skyrim, and those weren't really "huge change" endings like, say, New Vegas's was.

edit: and anyone trying to play the "but, but, but.... IMMERSHUNS!" card.... I think your immersion would be more screwed up by wandering around in a post-Finale world that doesn't show any effects of it, than by going back to a pre-Finale save and going exploring. But maybe that's just me.

I believe as someone once said in an age of wisdom that was long forgotten: just make it an option.

Upon completion of the game, a message should appear in front of you giving you the option of either continuing the game while making you acknowledge that whatever significant choice you made in the game won't exactly take into effect in-game (if there are any such choices that is, I only assume). Or simply choose to end it and return to the main menu, with the option to always go back and allow you to roam being available to you should you choose to do so.

Honestly there are solutions for both issues that exist already that people can easily do. Want to keep playing? Load a previous save. Want the game to end? Stop playing. But it seems no one will ever be satisfied with either, knowing someone else out in the world is doing something they don't like, so again, they should implement it as an option after the ending.

Meh. The one time they attempted a hard ending they turned around and undid it with a DLC. There won't be a hard ending. I'm sure that will disappoint some, but please most.

Personally, I would not care about continuing the game after the main storyline unless the ending affected the state of the game world in some way.

Skyrim and Oblivion did not have any world chancing ends. And NPC's very well reacted to your actions. Thats all that was necessary. Alduins death was just ending of the prophecy of end times. Oblivions ending stopped oblivion gates from spawning.

Development time? Cmon we are not talking about some indie company here. They will earn more than 10 times they spent on development so any "development time" issues are just excuses for lazyness and stingyness.

Lets be honest, no one plays Fallout because of its amazing graphics or mind breaking combat. People play it for the lore, for exploration and role playing. Many of us want to continue their adventure after main quest ends. Many of us want to continue "living" in that world. IMMERSHUNS? This game is all about IMMERSHUNS.

And whether it requires big ending and alot of coding, Bethesta has way more than enough money and experiance to do it. It would be silly if they just took the route of "We are too lazy to make an ending so load your old save"

Yeah, that's why I play these games. And nothing in any of them (not FO3, not FO:NV) has stopped me from continuing to play/explore/enjoy. That's why I don't understand the grand wailing & gnashing of teeth.

Eh, personally, I don't believe in this "immersion" thing. Far as I know, I've never run into it in 30+ years of gaming. Given how often I've seen moronic "my immersion is broken/game is ruined because " threads, I'm personally glad that I apparently don't suffer from it.

Oh I hated not being able to play after the main quest in Fallout 3. I would really hate to see this repeated.

Discussions abound regarding the previous FO endings. http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1524382-please-dont-have-those-endings-like-in-fallout-3-and-nv/ the one before yours for reference/food for thought and all the ruminations that go with it.

In F3, I was seriously miffed when a companion sent me to die of radiation poisoning when he could have survived.

Broken Steel was the right choice and should have been the first DLC released.

They could have also just said "The Lone Wanderer survived and continued his journey but that is another story."

At least until Broken Steel was released.

Now in FONV, I totally understood why it was a hard ending.

There were so many major decisions to account for that it would have been a night mare to try to cover everyone right.

Who was defeated, was the NCR kicked out, is the Brotherhood still around, What happened to the King and Freeside, let alone what happened to your companions.

I wouldn't had minded if they had removed the losing side or sides and had a little pop up saying "You can continue to play, but not all events from the ending will be present in the game world".

But I can understand why Obsidian decided not to.

Now Bethesda has taken their time with Fallout 4 so I'm not expecting an ending like Fallout 3 and if they want to continue play afterwards they will have had the time to do it right.

The Sole Survivor may or may not find his family at the end of Fallout 4, but there is no reason he couldn't continue unless the ending is so complicated that Bethesda can't handle it.

And frankly if Bethesda decided there are too many outcomes in the ending for Fallout 4 to continue, I would be ecstatic because it means Fallout 4's story will be as large and varied as Fallout New Vegas if not more so.

So win either way.

I would prefer it to end like New Vegas although it's probably not going to happen. Personally I think Broken Steel was a mistake and the original ending while not great is much better then what we got in BS. So I hope it ends but I'm not expecting that at all.

I hated that end game nonsense in NV too. When I was given 3 it was the GOTY addition so I didn't have to deal with it in that game lol. But yeah I would rather be able be able to keep playing because tbe endings are boring anyways and if they try to have the game end without an option to continue that's going to make me consider not even getting the game.

If you dont immerse yourself in the game, than every single diologue must feel as unimportant waste of time , every single cinematic must feel as boring things that force you to wait. Im pretty sure you have some immersion aswell , otherwise fallout and tes series are the last ones to play for such person.

There really isnt any point to end the game after main story ends. Least they can do is adding 3 line of extra diologues about "how hero saved the world". Yet instead they can actually make ending into game chancer and make it actaully matter. That would be beautiful. If they end the game with main story, its basically "everything is over, can complete extra stuff if you want". If they make it continue however, its "real game begins now".

not that concerned with this, obviously want to free play after main quest preferably, but i am far more concerned with the Main quest sweeping you up into it and then ending too soon.

I hated New Vegas main quest because of this, you couldn't really tell when it was going to end and then you got to a point of no return. I just hope its not "the end of the world" type main quest so that it doesn't pressure you to hurry up and finish it.

Eh. I play games and enjoy them for their stories, their settings, their visuals, their gameplay, their characters, all sorts of reasons. But I don't do anything wacky like "forget I'm playing a game" or "think I'm the character" or any of the other infinitely-variable definitions of "immersion" that I've heard people say.

(And therefore, my non-immersion isn't ruined by: briefly seeing my character in 3rd person, having a visible HUD on the screen, not having to eat/sleep/poop at regular intervals, or obvious game mechanics like loading screens or save points. Among the many, many things I've seen people claim will nuke their immersion.)

...but I've got to say: your definition (without immersion, a game must feel pointless/boring/etc) is a new one I've never seen before.

Well, mods that have the i-word means they're nothing but pointless busywork and inconvenience features.
So i hate it

Dont get me wrong, i play games for their gameplay and visuals aswell, but not the bethesta ones. Personally i think bethesta's gameplay is useally very boring and graphics, well there are always mods for it. However i really hope they get Lightning proper this time, even tough mods make it look much better, on skyrim they ended up making dark places much darker than intended thanks to lack of global illimunation

Personally I've found most games which are designed to continue after the "end" of the main quest/mission chain to have the end of the chain come across as somewhat weak/unsatisfying and they tend to lack a feeling that you accomplished what your character set out to do (although this is my own preferences talking).

Fallout as a series has always had "Hard" endings to the games, Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics, The Burned Game, Fallout 3 (vanilla), New Vegas all had hard endings. Having said this Fallout 2 gave you the option to continue after the end of the main questline, Fallout 3's Broken Steel DLC allowed you to continue.

One thing we should remember is that TES & Fallout are Separate series.

I did try suggesting that an option was added to New Vegas to continue to play after the main quest line (as Obsidian had stated that they would not be adding that as standard) but my suggestion was shot down in flames by the community (mainly the ones who were demanding to be able to play after the main quest, with the main objection being that it would break their immersion).

With Bethesda games I tend to think of the game being about the character and the setting, not any particular story. I don't even like referring to the main quest as 'the main quest' ... for me it's just the first quest you get and the one that defines your place in the world (like a series premiere), but it's only a small part of the overall game. Finishing any one quest is not, in my opinion, "beating the game". It's just a story arc in a series of tales about your character's adventures.

I'm pretty sure you will be able to play after the MQ. Beth received a lot of flak when FO3 originally had a final end. I'm sure they learned there lesson.:)

I agree, but even if we are wrong, I think they will look to the Witcher 3 and at least tell you when you are about to hit the point of no return.

Personally I could care less if they throw TES fans a bone, so long as it doesn't ruin my Fallout experience. If people want play after ending, then don't sacrifice the story for it. Give me something as great as New Vegas and I could care less what happens after my game ends.

I still don't understand why people can't be bothered to play the game before finishing it.. But whatever. As long as they make a notice that all gameplay after the MQ is NON-CANON and does NOT incorporate consequences because it is PURELY for exploration purposes.

How many times is this same thread gonna pop up though? I swear I've seen multiples of this same thread some with polls and others without. I wish that search function was working.

A warning message pops up telling you to save before continuing though. That's near the end of the main quest.

I think the common reaction to this notice would be, "What in the world does that mean? Am I doing something wrong?"

If there is a disclaimer, it should specify the thing that cannot be shown and it should explain why the thing cannot be shown: "You succeeded in turning all of the Boston area's super mutants into flying bunnies. Unfortunately, should you choose to continue, technical difficulties prevent us from showing you these flying bunnies. You can still find super mutants, however, and we apologize for any inconvenience."

I doubt Fallout 4 has need for disclaimers. Players know immediately when a game world fails to reflect what really happened or fails to reflect what should have happened. There is no confusion. You don't have to tell players, "What you see ain't canon."

the game won't end after the main quest, the main quest will only be a small part of the overall game, just like in skyrim, they just don't make their games to depend on the main quest, its an open world/sandbox game, this isn't mass effect. bio shock or deus ex, those types of games are totally different, you have to progress the main story in order to advance the game and do more things, bethesda games aren't built on the concept of having to do any quests if you don't feel like, total player freedom is what todd howard says their top priority is, ending a huge game with possibly hundreds of quests all because the "main story is completed" isn't gonna happen.

i do not think they will make the same mistake as in FO 3

mind if they ending of the main quest has serious implications on how the world changes we might see a ending like in fallout new vegas

but i prefer not
