Can't Run Fo3edit

Post » Tue Jan 04, 2011 9:37 am

Fatal: Could not open registry key: \SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout3\

Is all that comes up. I'd assume that it has something to do with me recently un/reinstalling Fallout outside of its regular spot, but I can't seem to find any way to redirect it to its new location.

Run regedit, browse to that registry key, and look at the data in the 'Installed Path' string value. For example, if you installed to c:\fallout, the data should be c:\fallout\

Also, FO3Edit.exe and it's other files need to be in this same directory

Hmmmm.

Forgive me as it's not obvious from the post, but do you have Fallout3 formally installed on this computer?

The reason I ask is it looks as though your Fallout3 registry keys are somehow corrupted or not there, and as such Fo3Edit cannot find them?

I would completely un-install and delete Fo3Edit, then re-install Fo3Edit using the latest revision and try again.

Just add those entries in the registry. If you don't know how, just let me know I'll write you a short guide.

The registry key isn't there.

More info would be appreciated.

Download one of these files (choose based on what architecture is your system - either 32 or 64 bit). Open the file (right-click and Edit should work). You have to change the line that start InstalledPath to reflect the directory YOU have the game in right now. For example, your directory is C:\games\Fallout3. The line should look like this:

"Installed Path"="C:\\games\\Fallout3\\"

Please note you HAVE to double the backslashes. Then save the file, double-click and confirm adding it to your registry. You should now be able to run FO3Edit without a problem.
