I've played hours of FO3 with tons of mods, on the upper end of medium settings. No graphical crashes or problems, no those were due to having tons of mods, and my incompetence with them. :D

And FYI, I wouldn't trust can you run it. I just tested to see if it thinks I can run Civ V, and it says my processor fails. That is completely wrong. I've played that game for 36 hours already, and haven't even had a single crash.

It gives me inconsistent passes and fails, all for games that I own and play regularly.

It should run fine at about medium settings depending on the resolution that you are playing on.

Well my monitor resolution is 1366x768.

Probably going to turn that down for FNV, we'll have to see how stuttery it gets as I play with the settings. I'm so stoked. :D

Also, can you run it says I pass by far, but like my previous post, I would NOT trust that site.

Any thoughts on the service pack & patches that I should be at with Windows 7 Prof. 64-bit? I'm finally upgrading to windows 7 this week in preparation for New Vegas, and wonder if anyone could point me to any optimization tips Fallout3? I suspect they will be similar to New Vegas, and want to start out with the most officient OS that I can. I feel good about the hardware (Gigabyte ATI Radeon 5770 2GB DDR3, Duo-Core Intel E8500 3.16GHz, 4GB OCZ platinum 1366 MHZ DDR2, SSDs), but will be an absolute newbie to Windows 7. I only really care about two things working better than XP; The Backup stuff and the Win7 kernel (full access to my ram, hopefully better speed). Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks. :)

Currently, with my build
Spoiler
Operating System:
MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

CPU:
Intel Pentium D 820

RAM:
5.0GB Dual-Channel DDR2

Graphics:
1GB GeForce GTS 250 (An AWESOME card for its current price)
I get between 15-30 FPS on medium settings in FO3. But to be honest, the not so smooth game play, and random drops in FPS ruined my play through. Although turning the graphics down did help by about 3 FPS, watching my friends play Crysis, Farcry, and Fallout 3 in it's highest settings on their computers turned me into a graphics [censored]. Fortunately though, just for New Vegas, I'm in the process of building a new PC, which will actually be finished this week.

It looks like your CPU might be holding you back, which would explain why turning the graphics detail down didn't help a whole lot (most of those eye candy features tax the video card rather than the CPU).

I've been playing fallout 3 and oblivion (which both run quite well on semi medium high qualities) for quite some time just wanted to know if I'd be able to run NV and get some opinions on my specs:

Dell Inspiron 1520
Intel Duo Core @ 2 Ghz
3GB of Ram
Nvidia 8600M GT
Windows XP SP 3

Just trying to get a feeling as to whether NV will even be a possibility or not as I really couldn't be sure from the listed system reqs. Thanks in advance for any replies!!

I have same specs, exept I got a better GPU - 9650m GT. Still, your 8600m (even if it's DDR2) will surely run the game nicely.
IMO, any C2D CPU is waaaaaaaaaay better, than single core one. So having two cores in CPU already boosts your chances greatly.

I'm wondering if my step-bro's pc could handle New Vegas.
If I remember right he has a Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz, 4 GB of ram, 4550 512MB, and is running Windows Vista. I would think he'd have no problem but I'm not sure how big a difference there is between a 4550 and a 4650m? Because the only difference between our systems is I have a 4650m and a C2D @ 2.8 GHz, and of course mine is a laptop and his is a tower. I ran Fallout 3 just fine, never lagged or anything.

That notebook is going to run it for sure. My guess is what it would be for FO3...around medium settings.

The Mobility Radeon was a bit slower than the desktop version of the 4650. The Radeon 4550 desktop card is going to be a bit slower than your mobile card still though...the differences in Stream Processors alone between the two is large. Here's a rough expectation for the Radeon 4550 though even with this game:

okay my turn heh...

my current rig can handle FO3 fine, it may chug a little bit at crazy parts, and the fps dips a little once i load the higher resolution texture mods.

i have a C2D e6600 2.4ghz
and 8800 GTS 512mb

the pomona fairplex will have a computer fair this weekend, and i'd like to know how CPU intensive FNV is, if my e6600 is powerful enough i'll just pick up a 460gtx graphics card.. but if FNV will be bottleneck at the CPU, i might as well upgrade that first.

so basically i'd like to know if FNV is more CPU intensive, or more GPU intensive... this will determine which upgrade path i take

I think I'll have to upgrade my PC for NV, but I would like your opinion on this.

This is my system:

AMD Sempron™ 3200+
1.80 GHz
1,00 GB RAM

I don't worry about my video card. And I can play FO3 on this system without any problems, except some crashes, but it doesn't happen too often. I'll have to upgrade the RAM I think, but do you think I'll also have to upgrade my processor? And if I do, which processors are the best ones for gaming?

Tank you in advance. :)

my current rig can handle FO3 fine, it may chug a little bit at crazy parts, and the fps dips a little once i load the higher resolution texture mods.

i have a C2D e6600 2.4ghz
and 8800 GTS 512mb

the pomona fairplex will have a computer fair this weekend, and i'd like to know how CPU intensive FNV is, if my e6600 is powerful enough i'll just pick up a 460gtx graphics card.. but if FNV will be bottleneck at the CPU, i might as well upgrade that first.

so basically i'd like to know if FNV is more CPU intensive, or more GPU intensive... this will determine which upgrade path i take

I feel the game is both CPU and GPU-intensive...FO3 was. Depends on scenario really...the more NPCs you have on screen, the more that CPU kicks in to handle all the intelligences. In battles, it's the same...intelligences and physics. Rigth now, your system is ok-balanced. The E6600 would choke a GTX 460 a bit...may be tolerable to you still though.

You should upgrade that processor just for the sake that it's a Sempron....these chips are not meant for gaming at all and are the Celerons of AMD's line of chips.

Can't tell you what processor to get though without knowing your motherboard. The Semrpon 3200+ existed for both Socket 939 and AM2. Both sockets are dead, but 939 past dead....chips are hard to find for this socket at a reasonable price. AM2 still has options floating around out there. But still, it's all about your motherboard and what it can support.

More RAM certainly wouldn't hurt.

Out of curiousity just what video card do you have?

The same can apply to New Vegas...it might run on the same engine as FO3...it might look pretty alike with it in terms of graphics and looks....but that doesn't mean shader requirement wasn't bumped up due to just a few (maybe even minor) new graphical features.

Shader requirements have not changed. It is still a DirectX 9 game.

AM2 only motherboard. Here is the CPU support list:
http://www.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID=OqYlEDFfF6ZqZGvp&content=specifications

You may very well need to update the motherboard BIOS for what I'm about to suggest to you:
http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=ADO-5600DO&title=AMD-Athlon-X2-Dual-Core-Processor-5600-2-9GHz-AM2-OEM

The chip is OEM, meaning no retail box or heatsink fan...just the chip. You will have to get a third party one. This will do:

Decent enough. Should pull rather high settings.

Make sure you have thermal paste for when you put the sink on. The fan will probably come with some, but certain brands and types are better if things already get hot in your case.

You'll want to spread the paste all over the chip's heat spreader. Less thickness is better, use a box cutter razor (a CLEAN one) to spread the paste thinly and evenly over the heat spreader.
