Can I safely remove mods on my current save?

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 11:08 pm

Hi. I haven't yet beat OB (but have been MW and FO3 and so on, so I want to finish the storyline before Skyrim. Not that I'll stop playing, I'll mod it some more after.)
I do have a few mods but I'm basically playing Vanilla.

Thing is, I got a couple mods, and now I want to remove them. They're not doing any harm, I just figure the less bogging down my game, the better.
For example, I downloaded "Capes and Cloaks" or possibly "Cloaks and Capes" but I decided they looked kinda dumb since they just stay in one position all the time. So now I don't wear any and I don't think I have any in my inventory. But if I just uninstalled the mod would I get errors/corrupted save?

Same with "Anywhere Sittable". I thought it would be cool to sit anywhere, but... it's alright. I mean, maybe I'll keep that one.

So can I safely uninstall them without starting a new game? Keep in mind I had my Vanilla save started before I installed any of these.

Also, I have "dropped lit torches". It's a really cool mod that seems like something that would have been in the game already. And I'm not sure if this is related, but I'm having a glitch. I was holding a sword and shield, and then I clicked my torch (to equip it, not to drop it. My house was dark.). It didn't show up as equipped on my character in the menu. I could rotate him and he was still holding the sword and shield.

I un-menu'd and I was holding the torch, so that worked. But when I opened the menu again, I wasn't holding the torch still, and also the menu just had a black background instead of the usual (which is whatever's really in the background.) Sorry if that's confusing, I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

So, thanks for any help you can give.

Is bumping allowed? If not, sorry and you can delete this post...

I apologize for being impatient.

Bumping while you post is still on the first page isn't really necessary. But to answer part of you question, yes, it is safe to remove mods from a game. I'd back up my saves just in case, but I've never had a corrupted save by removing mods. About your torch problem... which Drop Lit Torches mod are you using? I've been using http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16282 for a while without any problems.

As to uninstalling mods, for the most part it's perfectly safe. Some mods require special procedures. Kvatch Rebuilt, for instance, requires a command typed in the console prior to uninstall. But such mods are the exception, and authors normally mention such things in their readmes and/or Nexus description pages. And of course you wouldn't want to uninstall a mod that creates its own separate worldspace until your avatar has left that area.

For your average mod, what you normally do is make sure your avatar is in a "safe" spot not affected by the mod. Make a unique save. I recommend saving via console so you can give it a unique descriptive name. Assuming your mod is indeed titled "Capes and Cloaks", name your save something like "pre_CapesCloaks_uninstall" (minus quotes... What you type is save pre_CapesCloaks_uninstall). Then exit the name. Uninstall the mod. Adjust load-order, rebuilt your Bashed-Patch, and run TES4LODgen as/if needed. Launch the game. Load your pre_CapesCloaks_uninstall save. Once loaded, make another unique console save, maybe titled "CapesCloaks_uninstalled". That should be the end of it, again assuming there are no complications.

As for DropLitTorchesOBSE, first off you don't need to open your inventory to equip them. Just hit the "0" (zero) key. However, if you are wielding a weapon and shield the torch with drop to the ground rather than stay in your hand. That's prolly what happened to you. You just didn't notice the torch go flying away due to being in the inventory. Either that or the mod isn't functioning correctly...or I'm misunderstanding you.. Now, if a lit torch is on the ground and you pick it up, it will indeed automatically sheath your weapon...unless you are in combat.

I'm not using the OBSE version. At least I don't think. I think it's just Drop Lit Torches...

Since Capes and Cloaks actually adds items, should I throw them in the river or something? Or will they just leave my inventory if I uninstall the mod? Thanks.

Also, could someone explain what rebuilding my bash patch is?

Note: I use the Oblivion Mod Manager.

A nexus search turned up 5 mods with that name. It helps if you can be specific. The OBSE version seems to be the most popular one at the moment so maybe try that. You will need to be sure you have OBSE installed.

No need to do this. Just uninstall.

A Bashed patch is a custom patch created by Wrye Bash. It can solve many mod conflicts and make gameplay tweaks.

It's DLTIC 1.6 by Frugal, according to the Oblivion Mod Manager.

It seems to work fine now, so I won't remove that... just capes and cloaks.

So every time I remove a mod it's recommended to do the Bashed patch with Wrye Bash just in case?

If you are only using a few mods you don't really need to make a bashed patch at all, but it is a good thing to learn (especially if you are planning to make a more heavily modded setup). It is recommended (sometimes absolutely necessary) to rebuild your patch after adding or removing mods.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16282 is superior in a number of ways. But if you aren't using OBSE or many mods, then it really doesn't matter that much.

Only if you are using Wrye Bash and the Bashed Patch already. In fact in many cases it is necessary, or the game will crash. But you don't have to use it at all if you don't want.
It is a useful tool, especially with certain mods (some of which require it) and when one has a lot of mods. Don't worry about it otherwise.

I removed them, but I'm not sure I did it right. I mean, nothing bad is happening, but when I start the game it tells me that certain items that depended on certain files will not be available. Obviously that's no problem... is there a way to say "Ok, I get it. You can stop putting the message up"?

Yep, make a new save.
Assuming it is what I think it is, all that message is really telling you is that the save file was made using mods that are not loaded this time around. (Basically it is telling you that you removed a mod or two, which you did  )

Make a new save and that one will be based on your current load order instead, and all should be fine and dandy. :D

If you keep the old save it will always bring up that message, because it was made with those now removed mod files. They are effectively a part of that save.
