so can i be a samurai then?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 4:14 pm

tod said something like "the lower level armours look like they have been made in skyrim, and the better ones look like they have been made somewhere else"

i realy like the look of elven and all the other armour i have seen looks fairly decent.i am fairly sure everything will improve after oblivion too. but does this now mean that armour is going to be more unique?

is daedric going to apear less western?
is orcish going to go back to being awesome samurai?
is imperial going to apear more roman
is iron going to look more rugged?
is steel going to look lower tech?
is ebony going to finaly look decent?
are we going to get some awesomeness from glass or adimantium?
how good will dwarven look?
is it going to be possible to see indoril or chitin?
will there be some additional style of daedric?
can i have my skirts back?
will katana's be back?
what kind of new armour will we get?

This particular piece of armour looks amazing. For some reason I believe it looks quite like glass armour

And to answer your question on variety:

IGN: As compared to Oblivion, will we see roughly the same amount of armor sets and weapon types in Skyrim, or will the number be drastically different? Will there be new sets that we haven't seen before, and what influenced their design and appearance?

Todd Howard: There's certainly more, but I haven't gone back and counted. Many of the classic Elder Scrolls ones return, but even something basic like "iron armor" gets a design and look that fits within the tone of the game and the environment of Skyrim. We do the art design with the assumption that the basic stuff was made in Skyrim, and the exotic stuff like Elven was made somewhere else.

More likely, I think that's the female version of elven armor. While the structure is different from the image labeled elven armor, the style seems similar, it doesn't really look like it would be glass to me, in any case, granted, we don't know what glass looks like in Skyrim, but glass has always been some shade of green in the past, and this armor looks more golden.

But most of the questions posed in the topic are ones we simply can't answer, at this point, from Todd's answer, we can presume that Bethesda is putting more thought into where each armor style comes from, and making sure that it looks like something you could see the people who created it making, so when you look at armor, you should be able to tell which items are native Nordic designs and which are from other places. What I think we CAN assume from it is that we'll probably see a mix of both Nordic styles and foreign ones, of course, Nordic armors will probably still be most common.

Me, I wonder if they'll tell us what kind of elves elven armor is made by, I mean, "elven" is kind of a non-descript name in a setting where there are multiple types of elves, it would be like if Imperial armor was called "Human armor", and technically, chitin counts as elven armor too, since it's made by one of the races of elves in the setting.

As long as there are Akaviri weapons and armor (no doubt there aren't) I will get my eastern fix.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that's female Elven armor. Looks pretty obvious to me, I can easily see the connections/similarities between the male version.

But, as for the OP, you're asking us questions that you know we don't know the answer to, so I really don't have anything else to add.

Can you be a samurai? I highly doubt it, not without mods.

I also really don't understand how Daedric looked "western" or why you would think Orcish armor would look like samurai armor. And will we see Indoril or Chitin? Why on Nirn would we see two armor types that were made exclusively in Morrowind in Skyrim?

Then again most of your topics don't make much sense.

According to the lore, Akavirs don't wear armor.
We've had Akavir weapons (katanas and wakizashis) in Morrowind and Oblivion.

I don't think orcish is supposed to be samurai, more like mongol.

And how can daedric armor get less western? It's demonic armor. At most I can think it would be more "northern", but I don't know in viking mythology what kind of demon figure there was, and how they looked like...

Make the Orcish armor look all pastoral and nomad (and maybe moderately Samurai-esque) again and I'll be content.

I think Orcish armor should look more Mongol, or maybe resemble Chinese brigandine.

The direction they are taking with armor design looks very promising for skyrim, less traditional midevil and more barbaric and fantasy like. I do hope we get some eastern styles (katana!!)

Ebon blade was probably my fav weapon in Oblivion.

Yeah, I don't really see the western thing. Does anyone else think glass armor looks silly? I wish they would change the color a bit (maybe tone down the bright green).
I don't mind influences from current or past earthly cultures, but I hope these are subtle in skyrim. I don't want to see any samurai there. That's what mods are for (lol, I never get to say that, since I'm a console player).

I'm still waiting for region/city/smith specific versions of armor. That'd be really awesome.

Also, maybe since there are dragons this means the return of Dragonscale armor. Maybe even a full set.

As is often the case, it's a subjective matter, but I'm ambivalent about the whole far eastern vibe, samurai armour, katanas and what have you. Which isn't to say I hope they won't be there, but on the other hand, I hope there's not too much focus on them either. I quite liked the stereotypical fantasy mediaeval European vibe of Oblivion, for example, though I know some people didn't care for it and felt it was rather clichéd; I guess I feel the same way about the Japanese-influenced armour and weapons. But I guess we'll get whatever we get...

Orcish armor in Morrowind had a slight Samurai look, mainly because of the helm and overall profile. Other than that, it was really just like European plate armor, except the shield. Actually, Orcish armor always most closely resembled Daedric armor, with face-helms and faces on the shield, which makes sense to me. I feel like the Orcs don't have their own religion based around the 9 like the Elves and men do, but more often worship the "bad daedra" like Malacath and Molag Bal.

But so yea, in the same way that Orcish armor looked slightly Japanese, Daedric armor in Morrowind looked more eastern, if only because instead of just an "evil" great helm, you had several helmets which looked like statues from Hindu or Buddhist traditions. I liked the detailing on the Oblivion Orcish armor, with the scales and koi and stuff, and the overall shape of the helmet was fine, except for the goggles, which are kind of Nordic thing, Although we also saw them on the equally bad Ebony helm.

Of course, then you get Akiviri stuff, which in Oblivion meant katanas AND Roman style armor...so you end up with the Roman inspired Imperials wearing Roman inspired armor via a Japanese inspired culture.

I do want to see a return of katanas and stuff. I liked those in Morrowind. I really like the art direction of Skyrim though. Good improvement over the generic fantasy setting of Oblivion.

I don't think so. The general aesthetic between the pictures don't match. The man's armor has a very distinct bird/feather style all over it (the helm, the shoulders, the legs, the feet, the arms), something that's clearly lacking in the woman's armor, which is more...sharp and angular. In fact, it looks kinda' like a middle ground between http://www.uesp.net/morrow/hints/images/ar_glass.jpg and http://myoblivion.co.uk/r_glass.jpg (the former's shape in the latter's materials).

I too thought the Oblivion orcish armor was very cool. It was, it fact, my favorite armor model of any Elder Scrolls game, keeping in mind that I never wore any helms.
