Can't save changes to .esp files in the GECK?

Hey you guys, basically this happens repeatedly, if I create a duplicate of some random cell and make it my own, then save it, then load it up the next day, and make some more changes, it won't let me save over the .esp because it's active or something like that - I have to make a new .esp - now, when I load up the GECK today, it's showing the cell I've been working on as two separate cells, one with the first day's work, the second with only the objects added on the second day - is there anyway of merging them? Or like, being able to overwrite the first esp so I don't continually make new files?
