Can't set resolution to 2560x1440

Post » Thu Feb 11, 2016 10:12 pm

Hi all. I have a GTX970 and I just got a new 4K TV, but I can't select 2560x1440 for Fallout 4 upon launch. I've tried tweaking the prefs.ini file to manually adjust the resolution but that just stretched it out in a funky way. I can pick 1920x1080 and 3840x2160 so I don't understand why the step between is missing. Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

I think the aspect ratio option is grayed out (not home currently).

Are you trying to run in full screen or windowed mode?

I'm trying to run it in full screen, but I've tried it in borderless windowed mode as well.

You may need to update the driver for the tv as a monitor. It is probably Windows that doesn't know what resolutions to offer.

1440p isn't a standard TV resolution. Why you need 1440p?

If you can't run 2160p due to performance limitations then set it to 1080p and then use nvidia DSR to boost to 2k.

The TV will look better at 1080p then 1440p anyway.

I wanted to try 1440p as a happy medium between 1080p and 2160p. I can run Fallout 4 at 2160p and it's fine most of the time, just a little jittery here and there with most settings on high. Anyone have a recommendation for settings at 2160p with a GTX 970?

It's probably a limitation of the VRAM on the 970, remember only 3.5GB is at full speed.

Try the DSR setting for 2k (1440p). Set fallout 4 to 1080p first. You can use geforce experience to modify Fallout 4. I'll try to give a step-by-step when I get home.

DSR will render the game at 1440p but downscale it to fit the set resolution. You get a crisper rending but it won't cause display issues.

Also forcing 1440p on your monitor might limit the refresh rate to 30Hz.

Níeh?ggr, if you could post the instructions, that would be great. I looked at the settings in GeForce Experience under Games > Fallout 4 > wrench icon > resolutions > scroll up > Dynamic Super Resolutions. There isn't an option for 2560x1440, only 8192x4320 and 5793x3055. I also tried to change the pref.ini files again but it made the game crash after the initial Play screen.

Damn, its tryting to DSR your native resolution of 2160p, so I guess that won't work, unless you set your desktop to 1080p.

I just changed my desktop to 1080p, signed out, signed in, rebooted, signed in again, loaded GeForce Experience but still didn't have the option for DSR 1440p. Guess I'll just have to stick with 1080p with Ultra settings, which looks a lot nicer and is smoother than 2160p at mostly Medium settings.
