Can someone explain Dragon Souls and Shouts and Words to me?

Post » Wed Nov 30, 2011 10:15 pm

Ok - So I killed the dragon outside of Whiterun. It gave me a shout. Then I'm just minding my own business, and a dragon decides to flirt with me. I'm not interested, so I kill it. Then I absorb it's soul.

What now? How do I use that soul as my shout?

The shout I have is "Unrelenting Force" How do I "spend" the soul I just got and get another word?

FYI I know - hit the menu button, move the LS over to Magic, scroll down to Shouts... but then what?

Thanks.

So, I re-read the manual again, and it clarified it a little for me (a very small little):

Shouts are learned from the symbols on the walls? Or are words learned from the symbols on walls? Both?

I'm so confused.

Shouts themselves are learned by the "symbols" on the wall. You can't use that shout until you spend a soul to unlock that shout. A soul does not give you a shout it just enables you to use a new one.

A shout can consist of 3 words. The more words you have the more powerful the shout. For example in the quest
Spoiler
Bleak Barrow Falls you read the word for "Force" from the wall, then in another quest they teach "Balance" the second word in Unrelenting Force, by the monk "creating" the word on the ground and you read it and then you can use it...you'll see how it works in that case but in general:
. So you read the word on the wall. The words are in the Dragon's native language, and that's what you speak...Dragon. To be able to use the shout you have to absorb a dragon's soul and the soul unlocks a shout, whichever you choose from what you have read. Whether or not absorbing souls is as easy as it was in Whiterun I don't know because I get confused when people talk about Soul Gems.

dragon language is so powerful that it can be used to kill enemies and such
a shout is basically dragon language.
to learn a shout you need a word, and a dragon soul words are mostly found in dungeons, to get a soul u must kill a dragon

Im on Xbox 360, by the way.

Once you have a Shout, even the first word, and a dragon soul, go to Menu>Magic>Shouts. Press A to equip it. You should see a little arrow/pointer thing next to it. Now use RB to use the Shout, or whatever corresponding button depending on your system.
