Can someone explain this to me?

Post » Thu Jun 10, 2010 4:22 pm

We've all heard comedians muse about how they've used or are still actively using one drug or another.
And celebrities are often known for using (Tabloids or not, it stands to reason that people with money are going to engage in this sort of thing?)

So why aren't these people getting busted? Sure, they get sent to rehab every now and then but, what about the comedians?

See, there's a convenient law called "plausible cause".
If there's a leg sticking out of a trunk, police don't need a warrant to give it a gander.

But these comedians are giving full-on confessions on stage and on air. Arrest them. Search them. You're going to find something.

Is there something I'm missing?

Nobody cares.

(that's not spamming, its the answer. None of them really care about some random celebrity's drug misuse).

You're saying you want to arrest people and search them for telling jokes?

Well for marijuana - a lot of celebrities have medical licenses for them. Joe Rogan for example; what can they do? The guy has a legal medical document for using the stuff.

Alright, I accept the fact that many of them are lieing just to make material up. But it still warrants a search, at the very least.

Okay, and you're going to pay for the cops salaries who are going to do this?

Because I sure as schmidt am not going to let them waste my tax money like that.

Why not? Isn't it part of their job?

Plausible cause and all that.

There must be something I'm not getting.
Though the "money and lawyers" makes sense.

Its not worth the money time or effort to bust some comedians for drug use when far worse things are going on.

Going by your theory everyone in CODMW2 that has some title or symbol with a drug reference in it should be investigated.

No it doesn't. It's also not just celebs. Commoners make the same kinds of jokes all the time (or they aren't even joking) and nothing happens.

Go ahead and call 911. I'm sure they'd love to be tipped off.

I would hope police departments nationwide have better things to do then try and arrest comedians for possible recreational drug use.

No, it doesn't!

The problem with that line of thought(and the reason It'll never happen) is because if they sent out an officer to perform a search(and they have to send two, not just one) to every single nightclub or house where a comedian performs/lives, they would be wasting thousands of hours of manpower(most if it likely over-time), for probably a 5% arrest rate. In other words, it woudl cost a fortune for virtually no results, and the results they did get, would probably be minor, ie: related to marijuana, and small amounts at that.

No it doesn't. If I told a joke, that involved me taking a drug, the cops couldn't just say, "Oh hey, yeah, come with us you're going to jail. We're gonna search your car." The law of Plausible Cause does have a limit, and when it's in the context they put it in, there's no way the cops can seriously bust them or say, "Hey, can we at least take a look?"

That's why when you hear about a celebrity getting busted for drugs, it's usually not them at some Comedy House or somewhere like that, it's on the street. And it's against the law for cops in LA, and I'm sure in the rest of the US, to be waiting outside for the person at their car. It's call ambushing, and cops get in lots of trouble for doing so.

Should be mentioned that this did happen at least once in history. Us govn't finally got fed up with Tommy Chong and raided his house. They did not find any drugs.

I've seen people use drugs on comedy bits and not have anything done to them.

There's a clip with Tosh.0 doing a challenge with some guy from the Rogan Board and Chong inhaling two different drugs and doing a "test".

At least there was an effort.

As much as I enjoy Tosh.0... This. So very much this.
And yet it was 'censored', so their lawyers could scream "circumstantial" or whatever jargon they use.

Why would cops bother someone with drugs on them in small amounts? Sure it's illegal but dragging in bodies over nothing has very little benefit. Also, it's a comedian so he or she is not going to be a drug dealer or anyone important to the trade to make a difference. It's the same as if it were you or I, we're not worth the manpower or police time.

I'm only very against a couple things. Alcohol (ab)use is up there with the drugs, to a lesser extent. I've seen my own family get shut down by both of these things.

I think you're not getting it, it ridiculous to search and arrest people for making jokes about something that isn't going to hurt anyone else.

What is gained by enforcing things so rigidly?
