Can someone in the know confirm this?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:09 am

Okey been browsing the forums for a bit, eagerly anticipating FNV. I pre-ordered weeks ago, the PC Collectors Edition. I WAS planning on going to pick it up at midnight, seeing as how school is closed on Tuesday. In my readings I saw some speculation as to whether or not us PC gamers picking up FNV at midnight will actually be able to play it when we get home, something about Steam not unlocking the game until sometime in the afternoon on tuesday. I mean is this serious? Any Dev on here care to confirm that or something? If that is the case, I honestly have to say that is just ridiculous. Why can't we play it when we get it, and for the people who buy off Steam, why can't they play it when the clock strikes 12:01 AM Tuesday the 19th? What could possibly be the point in waiting until the afternoon to unlock it, besides pissing off customers?

So they are catering to the Hawaiians then? That's the only way to explain that. It's set to unlock at 1pm Pacific time. That's 4pm for the East coasters, where the majority of the US population is. I mean what's the sense in that? "Oh hey guys, get ready! Release date is October 19th! (Note, for PC players more than half of the day will have passed before you can fire up the game, sorry about that)."

I haven't a clue as to their reasoning. (Its just that the two companies are on opposite sides of our continent ~and I dunno if that even plays a part at all...)

Well hey, didn't mean to come off as an ass or anything. :P

I have hope that this doesn't hold up to be true. I mean there is just no sense what so ever in making PCers wait half the day before they can play the game. None at all.

I'm thinking this only affects people who actually download it from Steam. Because if all I have to do is log into Steam to activate my game, I can simply start the game in Offline Mode and Steam can't do anything about it as I wont be connected to the internet.

Unless they purposely make it so you can't do that, which I doubt.

I would think that "unlocking" is for steam purchases only, because the retail copy only has to be "registered"? right? either way once I have that game manual I can wait a day or 2 anyways. making character builds and what not.

This does make sense, but I'm not sure.

I do hope you're right though, Anti. I had an all nighter planned out after I picked up the game, was gonna have some friends stop by and everything... hopefully this doesn't put the kibosh on those plans..... :cold:

'Cause let me tell you, I'm gonna be pissed if I have to spend half of my day off, my precious time to get into the game, waiting around for it to unlock, even when I have the physical disc in my hands. :banghead:

Why do you think that? I mean, Steam users have to download it, so they have to wait, but we don't. The only thing I can see getting in the way of that would be if they don't even let us activate it until that time. Which would really, really svck. But if they let us, then I don't see how going offline wouldn't work.

Well, if it doesn't, I guess, to waste time, I'll just watch the Making of DVD 3+ times, read All Roads 3+ times, and inspect every panel of All Roads meticulously for interesting things I missed, and if that doesn't waste enough time, I'll just go to bed.

You have to activate any steam game once only before you can go offline. Before the release date, it obviously won't activate, though I'm sure you could install it fine.

Yeah I suppose if I do have to end up waiting I'll confide myself to drooling in the corner, pining over the purty collectors edition, while counting down the time 'till it unlocks with tick marks in my wall. :hehe:

Is that how other games that require Steam work? I've never done it before so I don't know. But if that's true, that svcks.

Can't even waste time browsing the forum either because it will become spoiler central...

Okay well I found the thread I was reading, and Gstaff made a comment about it. Apparently, he will have more information on this specific detail no later than Monday......

Back to the waiting game.

Hopefully some major SC2 gameage will go down this weekend to distract me.

If you are getting this on PC it does effect you, and even more so it would seem if you were planning on picking it up at midnight and hoping to play it when you got home. If you're a console user, well then you don't have to deal with the added aggravation. :)

And an edit, it unlocks 1pm eastern time, not pacific.

Still kiboshs the whole midnight release thing, if they don't/haven't already accounted for that and unlock it at midnight.

The Steam countdown always seems to be counting down to the middle of release day, but I suspect the game will actually unlock earlier than that. It was the same with Dead Rising 2 a few weeks ago. I pre-ordered and pre-loaded the day before release, and the countdown said 1pm Tuesday, but the game was playable when I checked at 7am on release day.

How soon after midnight is anybody's guess, but I don't think it will actually be 13 hours later.

And all PC players will have to activate it online with Steam before playing, not just those who bought through Steam.

I'm in the same boat (next Friday) the only worrying thing is that the Steam countdown is showing 18:00 BST (19:00 CEST) for unlock.
