I Can't Start Oblivion

Post » Sat Oct 30, 2010 7:47 pm

I can't start up oblivion. When I click play it starts to pop up and then it goes back to my desktop and doesn't start up. Please help me!

I have enabled Wrye Bash, OBMM, OBSE, and every other thing the installation instructions said to install http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=downloading_mods and http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=guides_mod_installation&subpage=complete_installation_guide&step=3.

On OBSE, I have the following in the 0019B/src/OBSE/Plugins folder: Elys USV, OBSE_Elys_Pluggy, sr_Oblivion_stutter_removal, and FastExit2. I created an OMOD from the Plugins folder, so I guess all four are wrapped up into one mod?

What does "ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated" mean?

Do I need to create OMODs for everything? Oblivion.esm, Shivering Isles, all the official plugins (Knights, Orrey, etc.)?

I've tried launching the game from the OBSE_loader, from the OBMM, and from the oblivion.exe itself. Nothing works.

Finally, when I deactivate everything but Oblivion, Shivering Isles, and the official plugins (bypassing all the tools), it does finally work. So, I'm guessing the problem is with COBL, one of the utilities I downloaded, or any of the optimizing/troubleshooting mods I downloaded.

I've used BOSS to automatically adjust my load order. Here it is:

Note: I'm on Day 6 of trying to get Oblivion to run with mods. This time, it's my intent to slowly build which mods I add. For the initial launch, I just want the official plugins and COBL. Is that too much?

Update:
I think I got COBL working with Oblivion.esm, the Unofficial Patch, and the official plugins ... I think.
OBMM says it's active and so does Wrye Bash, but the data files in the oblivion.exe interface says that only the Cobl Main.esm is active and all it's extras (Races, Tweaks, items interchange) are not, in fact, active (are they active within the Bashed Patch (which is active)?).
Weird, huh?

No, that's not weird, it's perfectly normal because yes, the rest of the cobl stuff is in fact merged into your bashed patch which won't show up in data files. Why are you looking at data files anyway? You have two tools that take care of your load order (OBMM and BASH), no need to use data files to manage mods. Always use the OBSE launcher to launch your game.

Your load order looks fine and if you can launch the game and play now, what's the issue?

One word of advise, Salmo the Baker is known to cause odd CTD's. You might want to remove that until you know for sure your game is stable.

As I said before, the game wasn't launching from anywhere.
When I went back to vanilla Oblivion (to get the game working again this morning), I used the oblivion.exe launcher because I wasn't sure if the OBSE was the problem.
After your comment, though, I did try with the OBSE and it's working fine now.
So, that leads me to believe that the problem is with the troubleshooting/ finetuning mods that TESIV: POSItive recommended I install. Maybe I wasn't supposed to create one OMOD out of the four mods??

Ok, I've never read the TESIV: Positive site so I don't know what advice it's giving, but for a little clarity I'll go back to your original post.

There's no need to create an OMOD for these, they are not mods. The fact they are already in the SRC folder means they are installed and working.

Do I need to create OMODs for everything? Oblivion.esm, Shivering Isles, all the official plugins (Knights, Orrey, etc.)?

Absolutely not. These are the main game files, already installed, so no need to touch them.

What does "ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated" mean?

It means Oblivion will look past the game .bsa's into other data/meshes or data/texture folders, or other .bsa's for files that you want to override the vanilla files. It's a typical technique used by 'replacer' mods.

Glad to see you have it working now. :)

Thanks for the help, Hanaiesse. :celebrate:

Another question.
When I'm using COBL and I want to activate the unofficial SI patch, which one do I choose:
"I am using custom body mods"
"I am NOT using custom body mods"

I ask because I've seen that one part of COBL installs five new races (though I've yet to see any of them).

I would say "NOT using custom body mods", since you don't have any other body mods such as Robert's or EVE.

I added Tamriel Travelers and Oblivion crashed.
I ran a conflict report from the OBMM and this is what it came up:

It's just saying that some mods replace objects in other mods. These are not real "conflicts".

At what point is Oblivion crashing? Post a new load order so we can see if you've installed correctly. (From Wrye Bash mods tab, right click on the header "File", choose List Mods, and copy/paste here)

Did you re-run BOSS and rebuild your bashed patch after installing?

Also, what's the problem if an .esp isn't showing up in the OBMM?
I uninstalled and then re-installed TT. This time, though, I used BAIN. It's showing up in Wrye Bash, but not in OBMM.

You only need the item interchange-placement for the mods that you do have active, meaning you only have Frostcraig Spire in your Load Order, so you just need the item interchange-placement for Frostcraig.esp.
The readme for Cobl is in 00 Core\Docs.
An OMOD will not show an esp if the OMOD is told by a script to not add the esp when the OMOD is installed, a body replacer or texture replacer may not use an esp at all.
Delete the extra esp's, then rebuild your Bashed Patch. Alt3ern1ty has a pictoral guide in pdf format showing how to use Wrye Bash.
I start my game using the Oblivion Icon in the lower left corner of Wrye Bash, and I place the check in the green box to enable OBSE automatically. The first link in my signature is very helpful.
EDIT You really need to get used to using BAIN instead of OBMM, With BAIN you always know what is installed, OBMM does not show an esp that is italicised because OBMM does not recognise it.

The item-interchange esp's that you do not need. P.S. I am glad you are familiar with BAIN, it makes removing the Cobl esp's very easy!

So, I think I did everything you said, but once again the game CTD.

Here's the new load order after I removed the extra .esp's.

P.S. I've been using TESIV POSItive for the last couple of days. It's the adding mods part that is tripping me up. :brokencomputer:

You didn't have to completely remove Item Interchange...

? ++ Item interchange - Placement for FCOM.esp [Version 0.76]

? ++ Item interchange - Placement for Frostcrag Reborn.esp [Version 0.76]

? ++ Item interchange - Placement for Frostcrag Spire Revisited.esp [Version 0.76]

You don't have FCOM, Frostcrag Reborn or Frostcrag Revisited installed, so you can't use these esps. Did you rebuild you bashed patch after removing Item Interchange?

Are the actual OBSE plugins inside your Data Folder as OBSE\Plugins\FastExit2.dll,pluggy1.32 .dll etc...?
Remember that BAIN will install them in Wrye Bash version 291 now. The Src folder and the two OBSE .dll's go inside the Oblivion Folder.
A misplaced checkbox in Wrye Bash will cause an instant CTD like you are describing

Yes. That is the correct address for the Pluggy/FastExit/etc. programs. I leave them there, right?
Do you mean I should move these from Oblivion/data/obse/componentDLLs to C:\Oblivion:

BorIndMM
debugMM

I'm not understanding what a "misplaced checkbox" is. Do you mean in the "Installers" area - corresponding to each of the Installed .esm's? I'm pretty sure those are correct. I'm not supposed to check anything that will go in the bashed patch. Correct?

Hmm. Cobl_172_21104.7z sometimes has an orange background .... I click on it, it's orange. I click off it, it's back to green ...
Update: It's now orange in both situations.

The two files you are asking about should be in Oblivion\Data\OBSE\plugins\componentDLLs.
You are missing all of your OBSE plugins.

By a misplaced checbox, I meant that you might have placed a check in the wrong area when you did build your Bashed Patch, a common mistake that can be hard to diagnose.

Folder: Component DLLs
Folder: docs
Fast Exit 2 DLL
OBSE_Elys_Pluggy DLL
OBSE_Elys_Pluggy.dlx
OBSE_Elys_Pluggy txt
sr_Oblivion_Stutter_Remover DLL
sr_Oblivion_Stutter_Remover Configuration file
sr_Oblivion_Stutter_Remover txt

What am I missing?

I went over the Bashed Patch a few times. I'm not supposed to check "CoBl filter late MERGE only .esp", right? Anyhow, I tried it both ways (checked and unchecked) and got CTD both times.

You are not supposed to check any green esps in the Wrye Bash Mods Tab, they should be checked inside the Bashed Patch while you are building your Bashed Patch. another esp that can cofuse you is the Tamriel Travellers ItemsNPC.esp, You should not check it at all, it should appear in the Levelled Lists section of the Bashed Patch, but it will not get a green dot or a +. You should go through each section of the Bashed Patch and look for any esps that you have in your Load Order in Merge Patches and each Import section of the Bashed Patch.

I think I discovered the problem, re-reading Common Oblivion's readme, I discovered this line regarding the COBL Filter Late MERGE ONLY .esp:

"Missing Masters: Most likely this mod has masters that are not available on your machine. As a result activating it results in a "Missing Masters" problem which will cause Oblivion to crash immediately on startup." Wrye

Bash is indeed saying that .esp is missing a master.
It's saying it- despite the fact that that .esp is rolled up into the Bashed Patch.

According to the COBL read me:
"However, when Bash merges this into the bashed patch, it does a filtered merge which discards references to mods that you don't have active, thus avoiding the missing masters problem. (Which is why Wrye Bash is required.)"

Does this mean that there is a problem with the "filtered merge"? If so, what is that (I could find no reference to a "filtered merge, Wrye Bash" on google)? How do I fix it?

*******

Even when everything lines up (i.e. COBL Filter Late MERGE ONLY .esp is included in the Bashed Patch, Bash doesn't say it's missing a master), COBL FLMO still isn't the next to last .esp in the list- right before the Bashed Patch. Instead, "COBL Silent Equip Misc .esp" is.
