Can't start playing, weird physics problem at beginning.

Post » Wed Mar 05, 2014 7:58 am

I just got Skyrim, legendary edition. I don't have any mods installed yet, I'm just running the game as-is with the latest patch from Steam. What happens is when I start a new game, the ride in that carriage goes completely crazy. First the carriage just seems to get smashed around a bit more than you'd expect and you can hear the horse getting hurt from impact. Eventually the carriage starts jumping up and down and spinning like crazy. At that point the game is basically stuck. What the hell is going on here?

What's the refresh rate of your monitor?

If it's above 60Hz, cap your frame rate at or below 60. If it's 60Hz or less, check to ensure V-Sync is enabled.

Yeah, it's limited at 144hz. I can't actually cap it though; it's an NVidia GSYNC screen with dynamic refresh rates. So what other options do I have?

Cap your frame rate with something like MSI Afterburner. You need to get the frame rate down, the game assumes 60 FPS or less.

Uh, I don't know.. this is a rather specific kind of screen (although very soon to become quite common), I don't want to damage it. This is starting to sound like more trouble than it is worth, how about gamesas cooks up some sort of patch for that hertz problem?

Not going to happen. Capping your frame rate won't damage your monitor.

Why would't they want to patch it? Static refresh rate screens will be phased out in the next couple of years. They would leave their game unplayable for prosperity.

I guess one immediate workaround would be installing such graphics-heavy mods that the dynamic refreshrate can't push it above 60.

Because Beth doesn't update games like that. Once they're done, they're done.

Obviously they aren't done yet. Heck, they might as well start releasing games in apha-state then. :P

Moreover, I'm sure they wouldn't want it to ruin their partnership with NVidia. GSync is a pretty high-profile Nvidia technology, for the time being at least. I'm sure this will be a standard feature before long.

Obsidian isn't going to patch Skyrim anytime soon anyway. They havent released a patch in years.

What kind of framerates are you getting?

It doesn't matter. That's not how Beth operates. Once they say they're done, they mean it.

Well, that's pretty crummy of them then. Best I can do is abide and hope someone important from Betshoft reads this thread (heh, or buys a new screen in the next few years) and will realize what a mistake it is to let a bug of this nature slide. Skyrim is by no means a 'legacy' game yet.

High, I'm guessing above 60hz in the opening. That may not be the most graphics intense area of the game though.

I mean frame rates not refresh rate. You would use something like fraps to monitor it.

That's the point of GSync, it locks framerate to refresh rate. It's really nice on the eyes. Can't try out fraps at the moment, I'm currently in the process of downloading and installing graphics mods to try and push down the FPS. If anyone has any recommendations along that line, they would be extremely welcome. The heavier the mod, the better. Currently downloading the Skytim hi res texture DLC for starters.

Yea but im curious as to what frame rates you're getting. This kind of issue can happen with high framerates. If you ARE getting high framerates. Yet to be determined.

The only surefire way is to cap your frame rate. FPS is different from refresh rate. The FPS can be capped at a lower level, the screen is still at the higher refresh rate.

No, not with GSync, rates between a game and the screen will always be identical. The monitor doesn't 'listen' at specific intervals for frames to arrive through the cable into the monitor, the (Nvidia) GPU directly controls the output on the screen. It's a first in screen-history () and circumvents lots of nasty problems with screen-tearing, motion lag and VSync.

As for the actual FPS.. I have no way of telling for sure if it peaks 60hz, seeing as how the human eye is limited at 40hz or something. It must be high though, what I have seen from Skyrim before the physics went crazy looked seamless.

You can use FRAPS and see what it says? BTW are you running SLI? What kind of GPU/monitor do you have?

Yup, that's the thing.

I can use fraps, but I want to see if I can bring down the FPS a bit first. Too busy downloading stuff for that right now to install Fraps. And if it works, I won't need fraps.

I'm not running noisy SLI, I use a single Gainward Geforce GTX 770.

If you read the linked article, you'll notice that Gsync can be selectively disabled per game. You can disable it for Skyrim if you're concerned and cap the frame rate.

Limiting the frame rate is the only way to fix your issue if it's related to having too high of an FPS.

Why would I want to disable the prime reason I bought this screen..

Well, the official DLC textures helped a *lot* already. I can get through the carriage ride without the physics bugging out now. Funniest thing though, the physics bug still happens again if I look straight up at the sky at any point during the ride. The FPS skyrockets and then the carriage starts bouncing around again. Kind of amusing, actually. I wonder if there are any other, scripted scenes like that in the game. Either way, I should probably install a couple more graphics mods to be sure.

So yes, add this one to the 'FAQ', gamesas. Problems with GSync can be overcome by installing graphics heavy mods.

:D
