So can I still explore the wastes in my power armor or..?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 6:34 pm

Looking at the changes that are going to be happening to power armor in Fallout 4 I find myself wondering if we will still be able to use it freely in our wasteland life as we did in previous titles or if power armor is going to have strict use requirements.

Like if power armor is going to be more like an armored vehicle that we can only don for short bursts of time due to power restrictions or scripted events instead of something you can wear constantly / build a character around.

I'm not trying to start an argument about the usefulness of power armor here, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had these thoughts.

My interest here is mostly self motivated as my characters have always been tech nuts/ scientists who valued their power armor once they obtained it as a way they could survive on their own in a world where they would otherwise have no chance, I'd hate to see that character die ya know.

Indeed, I have had those thoughts!

Hell, I would like to know how you are supposed to enter a building while "wearing" (driving!) that thing (it's more of a Mech now than an armor -.- which I really really dislike!)...it's too bulky IMHO (why did they have to go this overboard? - Hell, why did they have to break the lore like that...yes, the armor is bulky, but it's an armor, not a MECH -.-)

I suspect you'll be able to use it as much as you like, though I suspect you won't be able to repair it in the field. So when it is heavily damaged you'll have to crawl at a turtles pace to an opening and call for an extraction. That and I suspect we'll get T-45 first, and we'll have to pop a micro fusion cell in the back every so often. Though this is just me speculating/hoping, it would make meh sad if I had no power armors :(

The T45d doesn't work like that anymore (only the early versions/prototypes did and the army realized that was not feasible, so they switched the energy cells for a nuclear powercell which does not need to be replaced (unless it gets damaged) for years!)

What if the suit we find is one of the early versions/prototypes, i remember seeing a post about there possibly being battery drain on the 45

Yes, on the prototypes which were retired/scrapped/upgraded (I hope to never see one because making the choice whether to use your energy cells to walk around or use your weapon with them is bad IMHO -.-)

I think it will work much like a vehicle and maybe limit where you can take it eg fine in industrial and office buildings but not in private houses (smaller doorways)

The power armor is more like a vehicle, so I guess not.

I hope this is the case, I really do

Actually I think the sizes are lore acurate.

Uaser is probably right . PA makes you a head taller so that is 7' plus and it needs to be thick say 2" of armour plus it's inner workings could easily make it 4' across probably more like 5' that would make most doorways to small for you to easy get through, that's before you think of the weight if you say a ton that is a lot for 200 years old floor to take on human (ish) size feet

I have been wondering the same. It looks like in one video, the main character puts in a power unit into the back of the armor; I'm guessing we will have to obtain/purchase power units, and will be limited by how many we have.

I hope so but i'm not seeing it based on the fallout 4 from E3. Btw, Power armor has to be air conditioned how else would people wear it without fainting in the wasteland. lol random thought.

Getting access to some form of power armor early but having good reasons to not use the power armor all the time would be great.

Having a micro fusion cell T-45 held together with duct tape and bailing wire would be perfect.

I won't even go in to how much effort it will take to keep the mini gun in ammo.

We haven't see anything on hand loading or recharging the various energy weapon power sources, but it has to be there considering the sheer size of the crafting system.

Of all the changes I hate about Fallout 4, this change I absolutely adore.

I hate how power armor was just Fallout's version of plate armor. I love anything in this game that diversifies gameplay and forces us to make choices and think tactically. Now, I do hope we can use the power armor whenever want. I hope the only limitation is its durability and mobility. I do wonder how the jetpack will work in indoor areas. Hopefully they utilize it well, making it so you can bypass certain areas or reach places you couldn't otherwise, the downside being that the jet pack alerts every enemy in the zone. I highly doubt Bethesda will get that deep into it though.

Day 25-

Elizabeth took a beating and had to pull over for field repairs. Just my luck I'm in a hot zone. Scrounging for the necessary parts is going to be a pain. If Elizabeth was in working for, this would not be an issue.

Just a few more things and I can juice her up and get back home.

I agree, I love the new power armor.

I bet we can use the jetpack inside.

Using the jet pack drains action points. I've seen it lift up the power armor but I bet it can't lift you up very high before you run out of action points.

I'll also bet that you will be able to hop up a story or two at a time so there is going to be all kinds of places for us to explore that we would never been able to reach in F3 or FNV.

Hell worse come to worse if there is some place you can't use the jetpack to reach like the top of a sky scrapper, you can just hop in the vertibird and then jump out while you are over it.

Getting down might be a little harder.

I think the big question is how often is the weight of the power armor going to be too much for the floor or roof to handle?

I can't wait!

This is something that I love that the new power armor design is giving us, It's a great opportunity to give us a deeper role playing and technical aspect to using power armor.

I just hope it doesn't end up making the playstyle a bit to limited to be fun... mostly I hpe we can at least put it on and use it whenever we want.

I'm sure there will be perks for Power Armor use like there are with anything else.

*Dude in giant power armor carrying a mini-gun jetpacks a hundred feet into the air and lands with a massive thud and walks towards a kitten with the earth trembling as he moves*

"Hey I'm here to rescue you!"

Lol I so wanna see that.

It seems likely, though I may just be really hoping, that that was a one-off scripted sequence. Supposedly, there are multiple ways of completing Preston Garvey's quest, and using the deactivated power armor is just one of them. It's quite possible that that suit is the only one in the entire game that requires a new power source, for story purposes. Maybe Garvey gives you the suit as a reward for saving them, and it's the frame that you build your own power armor off of.

The power armor shown in Fallout 4 is far closer to what it's actually supposed to be than what was in Fallout 3/New Vegas. Fallout power armor is a large exoskeleton, not Imperial Stormtrooper armor, it's supposed to make the user as big as a Super Mutant. If you look at the intro cinematics of FO1 and 2, and compare the sizes of the power armor sprites to the human and super mutant sprites you'll see that power armor in Fallout 4 is no bigger than it was shown as being in the first two installments. It was downsized in the Fallout 3 engine presumably due to technical limitations.

The user should have no issues entering buildings. Power armor may be big, but it's not that big, and also functions like a second skin. You can perform any movements you could perform if you weren't wearing it - including lowering your head to fit through doorways.

My idea is that you will be able to call your Power Armor to you, flown in by your Vertibird. That, to me, sounds like something really possible and exciting. I planned on not really using the Vertibird for anything until that idea occurred to me. So it is more useable than having to only put it on as you leave your homebase/settlement, etc.

In my opinion, this power armor seems too be different from the T-51b and the T-45d. It's probably that T-60, which might have been a new variant of power armor that was just starting to roll out.

Though it seems like you'll be able to pick and choose the parts you use, which would affect how it's size, durability, etc. etc.. So it might be that this is a complete overhaul for power armor. Or we might be able to wear the earlier models without the whole "vehicle" like affect. Though... I am doubtful of this.

I expect it to be applicable to every situation (gamesas would never want the casuals to claim the game is too hard), however logic would dictate it to be a bit wonky in close quarter (as in it might take a bit of effort to turn around to face an enemy in a hallway). If nothing else i hope "switching" out the parts actually has an effect rather than just being cosmetic. My Advanced Mark II should be superior to T-45 in every way
