Can't Think of a Name?

Post » Wed Sep 21, 2011 1:21 am

I've seen quite a few threads about naming characters, so I figured I'd throw this thread together to help everyone out. Below, I've listed a couple name generators, both lore friendly, and an official list of names previously used in TES games from the Wiki.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Khajiit_Names
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Orc_Names
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Wood_Elf_Names

Using the Nord names list from the wiki, I'll be naming my Skyrim character Rodin Red-tooth.

Hopefully, this thread will help some of you name your characters. Have fun! :foodndrink:

Alternately, the UESP wiki (uesp.net) has pages with every first name and family name/title of every character in the TES games. That's a good start point. Just look up 'Nord names'

Want an alternative? You always have http://www.silgrad.com/oblivion/rangen/. I mainly use this one, it's very helpful and lore-friendly! It even has generators for the different Dunmeri houses!

ps: you could add it to the OP ;)

What makes a nord his/her name is not the name but the title that comes after it!

Haki Soul-eater for my male Nord.

In usual Brony fashion, (something or other) Twilight-dash for my female Nord.

I was just getting ready to post about Silgrad's generator when I saw your post. Personally, that's my favorite name generator and I use it for many games.

I'm kind of surprised there has not been a Ji'dar NPC yet, I have used this name since Morrowind and thought I was going to run into 'myself'. But if he does make an appearance in Skyrim I am totally going to marry him.

Also, Thanks for the name generators!

Yeah, I find it great too! I've named almost all of my recent chars in TES with names from there :)

Btw, this thread would be really helpful, but I somewhat doubt it will stay in first page for long *shrug*

I like the character to be a little bit of me, usually my first character has my name, and for the subsequent character after that, I take my real life name (Christopher) and modify it, or spell it backwards.

eg.
Hristo
Opherc
Sirhc.
etc.

Thanks for the pages to help with making a name. I find it difficult sometimes to come up with the right name but I keep going until I hit on it. Then you just know..this is the one.

It's great to hear about all the possible sources for names and I do visit the name generators and it sometimes leads to a name I can change a bit to get the right one. Some places I go to are the Google translator, where I type in a word with meaning for the character and then click on the different languages to see what comes up and if it sounds name-y. I found the names I'll use in Skyrim by Googling "Elven Dictionary" and then checking out different sites. I used Elven because my little Breton has that in her ancestry. I came up with:

Name: Kiir Srinna or Evaliir Srinna
Kiir means ‘Gem’
Srinna means ‘One Who Tests Limits and Establishes New Boundaries'
Evaliir means ‘Song’

Since she loves music and will visit every tavern to listen to the Bard (I hope they are in all of them), I'm leaning towards Evaliir now.

Thanks again!

I came up with my Nord Hunter's name by using an index of Old Norse.
His name will be Hj?rval Rime-fist. I'm pretty excited.

Thanks for putting this resource up.
It's great for new players and those who don't know the themes behind the names of the races.

I usually use the first letter of my name, in Oblivion, my assassin's name was Ralas, and Skyrim's gonna be Rodin, because my names Ryan. I like how it has the same first and last letter. :ahhh:
