So, we can turn off quest targets!

Post » Fri Sep 02, 2011 4:30 pm

Pete Hines confirmed on twitter that we are able to toggle quest targets on and off, as morrowind fans will be happy to know.

Unfortunately, we still won't be able to toggle compass markers, but at least they've listened to their morrowind vets(not me) in the above way.

Thoughts?

the difference this time around is that if the game is designed to be played with them on or off that more than likely means npcs will be giving directions where to go ala morrowind instead of the useless "north of skingrad" directions you got in oblivion.

Wasn't there an interview or something that said they can be toggled off, but not with a setting?Wonder how that would work.

Why would you want to do that? To make it harder?

It will only work if they give complex directions IMO.

In Morrowind there are no quest markers. It works very well. I recommend you try it if you haven't. It's very refreshing.

If the quests were designed to have targets there is no point.

Something like that. NPC gives direction and PC follows direction, you kinda have to find the target, which adds another level to whatever quest you're on.

That is of course if they bothered to make the NPCs give directions. As long as this was a design call from the begining we should be fine, if its just tacked on at the end to please the fans then it'll most likely svck.

Yeah gonna have to mod location popups off the map as well.

That aside, I'm still glad quest markers can be removed.

compass markers are the icons that pop up near a mine that show you "hey something is over this way go look at it"
quest target is the red/green arrow that shows you exactly the way to go to finish the quest you currently have active in the journal

amiright?

Four things on the compass, the following is my opinion, feel free to argue :
NSEW : So the Dovhakiin has a lodestone. No problem.

Enemy markers : If you assume your character can detect things by sound, smell, peripheral vision etc. that the player can't see, no problem.

Quest Markers : Fixed, and if it's true that the directions can be more accurate if they like you more, wonderful.

Points of interest : You are halfway up a mountain. Suddenly you know there is a dragon shrine at the top, that way, OR, you have climbed a whole mountain, hoping something is at the top. Your effort is rewarded when you discover a dragon shrine.

It's a bit odd that you can turn off the quest marker but not the compass POE markers. I would have thought it would be the other way around if anything.

I would prefer to be able to turn all the hand holding elements off but it's something. I'm pleased.

Does this mean there will be an option to turn off all quest markers or does this just mean we are able to deselect a quest, removing the marker? I think he means the latter which isn't too different from Oblivion where you could select a different quest.

couldn't you do the same thing in oblivion by turning off the quest itself as active and doing it anyway?

it didnt work in oblivion because you were never give specific directions anywhere. the best you got was "south of chorrol" or "east of anvil" if you switched to another quest you literally had no way of knowing where to go. since they have made the feature optional in skyrim im thinking that the npcs will give more accurate instructions.
