Can't use arrows long range in Skyrim?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 10:32 pm

I noticed this too right away the first time I went out hunting. Trying to bring down targets downrange at large distances is impossible. The arrows just pass right through and don't register damage. I've tested this over and over and found the arrows in the ground right where the animal/npc was situated.

This needs fixing asap tbh! :shakehead:

The youtube video is proof positive.

I like how the arrow just disappears into the second target. *facepalm

See the .ini alterations at the top of this thread, it's helped me a lot. No use for console users sadly.

Yeah, it's not a bug, it's a feature :hehe: After doing that alteration i've been sniping just like in the good old days of Oblivion ^_^

..They're bows, not sniper rifles.
Someone who has no idea how far a bow can shoot, don't even get me started on longbows. 165-228 meters, but specialized bows have been known to shoot much further. In game that doesn't exactly look like 165 meters.

I used the bow and arrow a lot in Oblivion, and I am certain I had an above average shot. I hit targets that were insanely far away first try, and I hit moving targets with their eratic behaviors with ease. Sorry if this bragging is annoying, but I have a big problem with Skyrim and I'm certain it's not a skill issue.

All of my short and medium range hits have been great and I'm loving my Assasin, however after spending a long amount of time trying to snipe a certain person at a far distance I finally came to the conclusion that there has to be some sort of bug going on.

I tested a still target that was standing still about 10 seconds of sprinting away. I shot extremely low and then moved just a very small bit higher and higher each time to try and get a feel for the sweet spot until I was clearly shooting too far. The target would become aware of my presence each time but nothing seemed to hit.

I found this video and I am almost certain this is the bug! Anyone else?

*bump* I hope Bethesda posts something about this so we know if it is "working as intended" or a bug. I hope this is not how it is going to be as it really hurts my stealthy archer elf's ability to get that critical first shot in without being detected. I was playing last night and really noticed this long range issue on several large targets. Shoot shoot shoot...etc and it looks like every arrow is right on target but no hits. The target eventually reacts and runs around searching for me (oh great) but has never taken any damage.

The archery system is fun enough that I still play it religiously, but it definitely cripples gameplay potential. Some caves are set up for perfect take downs of targets if you can manage to get up into the perch, and if you aim just right shoot into small holes in the wall for long range assassination, however this bug has made that impossible. Imagine how gratifying if mobs weren't suddenly ghosts after 100 yards.

A new instance from this morning's play:
A hawk flew away with 3 arrows clearly rendered about 1ft off its right wing.
1. It was in a tree.
2. I hit it.
3. THREE times as indicated by the fleeing animation!
Had I hit the branch? Had I hit the trunk? Was I too far away?
No to all the above as I had a clear view and was less than 30meters from the tree's base.

It flew away with three of my arrows and not one feather added to my ingredient satchel. Insert sad face here. I'm enjoying the game and, as with any game containing such a wide variety of play, initial bugs/glitches are to be expected. Patches are common and I am a patient man. Not an issue.
But something as basic as shooting a resting bird off its perch well within range... C'mon, Man.
I pegged it. THREE times.

That's just weird dude. Are you sure the arrows stuck to the bird? This story is getting worse and worse, but I didn't even think you could hunt birds.

Three clearly visible arrows floated off the bird's right side as it flew away.
Clearly visible.
They're relatively weak and fall easily @ Lvl1 with a mere longbow and iron arrow, so it's not that he survived and flew off.

And yes, hawks give two very useful alchemical ingredients: Hawk Feathers and Hawk Beaks.

Yeah I'm having a problem too with Archery, in Oblivion I could jump sideways while hitting a moving target and 8 maybe 9 times out of 10 hit the target but now even when standing still I miss targets when I should hit them.

I'm thinking something is wrong with the correlation between the crosshairs and the bow aim.

Definitely something wrong with the long range shots, this needs a fix- no question.

In my experience, the arrows seem to go clean through the target at a certain distance (and it's very short).

I spent half an hour and around 800 arrows to test this (was a late night) and until I came into the magical range my arrows would pass through enemies and they would proceed to follow where there arrow landed.

Again, I hope it's something Bethesda is looking into. It's great that I'm on a PC and all, so modders can fill that void but this is something I've seen happening on consoles as well.

Man... I thought I was the only one. We need the Construction Kit or a patch for this one. Then again... the game has been out for six days. No battle plan survives first contact with the enemy, and no Bethesda game survives first contact with the hundreds of thousands of true believers who beat the game into the ground the moment its available.

They're good about patching errors, so they'll do so. Then they'll release the Construction Kit, and even more things will be fixed. For the console people... well, like I said, they're good at releasing patches. Keep the faith!

I actually think they have decreased the range of arrows so the Masterdons and Giants have a chance. although I havn't been hit by either one of them using bow
