Can you have more then one Companion : V

I was going to hire a mercanry but the merchanry wouldnt join me unless i droped the other companion then it hit me does Skyrim not allow more then one Companion character?.

The only other compagnion you can have with the one you right now is a dog.

i've heard that if you get a follower as part of a quest, they will follow you as well as your normal companion

but i haven't played enough to check this for myself

Mods will likely change it but yeah right now you can't have more than one NPC following you as a Companion.

I play on ps3 so Mods cant save me from petty game flaws like this.

You can have a Dark Brotherhood Initiate (Who can also never die, only go into recovery, even if you try to personally execute them), along with any other follower, so you can have at least two (not counting dogs/horses/conjuration)
