Can you imagine if Hans Zimmer scored Skyrim

Post » Tue Jan 25, 2011 6:00 am

It would be bombastic and over the top and sound like all of his other stuff? I like a few of the movies he does soundtracks for (mainly Gladiator and King Arthur) but it uses the same theme song in literally almost every movie. He doesn't really have much range.
Granted, a lot of his Saxon music from King Arthur would work in Skyrim, but I'd much rather have a really GOOD composer do the score. Like Howard Shore, or John Williams. John Williams has somehow managed to make dozens of amazing theme songs, all sounding entirely different. You can still tell when music is done by Williams though, it has a "feel" to it. Whereas Hans Zimmer just.. literally sounds the same.

Soule would be nice too. Hopefully he'll do some more moody music like in Morrowind, mixed with the over the top from Oblivion.

Prefer soundtracks by Thomas Newman, good old Morricone or even underdogs like Clint Mansell (requiem for a dream, anyone?) and Asche&Spencer because they actually succeed to write a song that defines a movie.

Yes, Thomas Newman is also great! I especially loved his work for Meet Joe Black, one of the best and underappreciated movie scores IMO.

If someone SHOULD compose the music it's the one and ONLY master - Ennio Morricone (talk about a composer with range). Until you've heard "The Mission" soundtrack, you ain't got no valid opinion, IMO. He should have won that Oscar.

Of course I'm joking, everyone is entitled to their own opinion  Seriously though, you should listen to it. It's Fuh-mazing. Really. Especially the climix in the track "Falls". If you have Spotify you can find the soundtrack http://open.spotify.com/album/2fOlcWrSR032MxwMCQe9LA.

This is a pointless argument. Every composer has a signature melody that one can typically hear throughout any of their sound tracks. Just listen to John Williams, who is arguably the greatest movie composer to ever live. He has done Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, Indiana Jones, the list goes on. Hans Zimmer is a great composer, and he makes masterpieces of art that truly convey the entirety of the film. However, I'd prefer if he sticks to making soundtracks to Batman. Jeremy Soule created the sound we all know and love for Morrowind, and it's nice to see how it has transitioned to Oblivion, and now Skyrim.

Clearly you are not familiar with the works of Ennio Morricone. His music is very diverse.

Hans Zimmer is overrated. His best scores are the ones few people seem to appreciate, and he hasn't done anything outstanding for years. Personally I would prefer to see Jeremy Soule make a return... I've enjoyed his scores for past TES games and even though they may not be the most amazing songs, they provide great atmosphere and they never seem to become too old/overplayed/monotonous.

Movie composers I'd take over Zimmer: Howard Shore, Joe Hisaishi, John Barry, James Horner, Jerry Goldsmith, and Alan Silvestri. I feel John Williams is perhaps the most overrated film composer of all time — not to say that he is bad or that I don't respect him, but sometimes he just gets too much credit/respect compared to other great composers. I didn't include him on the list because I don't think his style of composing would work well in a game series like TES. Same reasoning for not including Morricone; he's probably my favorite film composer of all time but I can't imagine his style of music in a TES game.

There is always the exception, but most composers typically have some continuity in the flow of rhythm that transitions through their works. That's why a person who is musically trained can tell when they are listening to Mozart or when they are listening to Beethoven.

Clint Mansell would be my dream composer for this game since that seems to be what everyone is posting about. I absolutely love his work in The Fountain. Which is a pretty good movie but that soundtrack made the whole experience for me. Also i gotta say, i really liked Marty O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori's work in Halo Reach, didnt really care for the game all that much but I'll be damned if it didn't have a great OST.

I will say Hans Zimmer is a great composer but, I think Jeremy Soule knows the sound of TES better than any other composer. It has a more classical sound to it which for me is more suiting. However, I am expecting some epic instrumental blast during dragon fights.

I have to agree here. Hans Zimmer is undoubtfully talented, but he get's so much credit because he is working with music in some of the absolutely biggest blockbusters (Batman Begins, Dark Knight, Inception, Pearl Harbor, Gladiator) with some of the biggest blockbuster directors like Christopher Nolan and Michael Bay (ugh). And he copies himself all the time. Some years ago I found a track in the Pearl Harbour soundtrack and a track in The Last Samurai soundtrack that was almost identical melodically.

Should you listen to a track by Mr. Zimmer it is "http://open.spotify.com/track/53CxTRm73THL8NuTsNTlUy" From http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108399/. Even though it is a homage to "Gassenhauer" by Carl Orff, which is in the soundtrack to the classic http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069762/, it is a very beautiful piece & it sets the mood perfectly.

Some of his music fits for that too, but I don't think you've heard enough of his works.

Really? I've only ever heard the stuff he did for the Dollars trilogy, but if he's got a larger catalog of work I should definitely check it out.

And I just watched Requiem for Dream. Clint Mansell did awesome with that, and although I can only remember two tracks, the rest of the soundtrack was solid too.
