When I started finding musical instruments and seeing and talking to bards in inns all over skyrim, i thought that you could be able to play music but never figured it out. Then I heard about the bards college, went there, became a member, finished every single quest, talked to every one there, but I still can't play music. I can be very stupid sometimes, so, did I miss something? I think it would be extremely ridiculous if you aren't able to play music, despite being able to actually become a bard and collect musical instruments.

Can you equip the instruments like, say, a sword?

no you can't. it seems that you really can't play music. That's one of the stupidest things I've ever experienced in a game.
