Take that CRTC! The people have spoken.

I don't believe the government has anything to do with this, does it? Why do you guys keep bringing the government into this? Canadian internet providers (such as the one I worked for) already enforce these kind of rules on bandwidth.

Whats to stop bigger carriers like Bell or Rogers?

Of course if all of the ISPs in your area are going to a cap-based system, it doesn't work.

In which case, screw Canada. They messed up bacon anyway. :P

I guess I can sadly mark Canada down with Egypt in the list-of-places-I'll-never-live-due-to-lack-of-awesome-internet list... :(

Wait, they're blocking the cap? Goody! I always wanted to live in Vancouver. :D

Mike I think the problem is that people are annoyed that basically the CRTC has given Bell and Rogers carte blanche to basically charge people or even smaller companies whatever they please due to them going over their bandwidth etc. However to me being i the UK it reads to as though the head of the CRTC has basically been thinking about something they could bring in to make the government look bad due to the fact that they were overruled on a new Cell provider going into Canada.

Either that or Bell and Rogers have said to them We're not making enough money we need something that means we'll make more.

And how are we going to get hundreds of thousands of people to just stop using the Internet? Believe it or not, we aren't the stereotypical rednecks and fishermen. Hopefully our carriers will see how bad a decision this is and change their minds.

EDIT: For the record, I don't even use this much bandwidth. Not many people do. But we shouldn't have such a cap on something like this, especially when so many other countries don't. I could see people who work from home and use a lot of bandwidth moving down to the US over something like this, which is not good for our economy, and in turn the carriers responsible.

This doesn't mean anything yet, and nothing has changed. CRTC needs serious reform.

The fact is, I rarely download games from Steam and don't use Netflix, but it's still important for use to be able to have access to that kind of stuff. The entire world is seeing a massive increase in internet-centric products, and if Canada gets low caps like 25 GB, we'll end up being left behind. Why? So that we can keep buying TV from Bell or Rogers instead of using Netflix, or so we cap keep using Bell's phone services instead of using VOIP? Screw that.

Good news is that article says it's going to squash them down, bad news... told them to go back to the drawing board like it's not over or something. I hope all of the evidence we're aware of is presented to them so they can see the outright lies of Bell about how much it's "costing them". Pffft... they made 2 billion after they paid off the expenses. Plenty of data to show the cost of sending a GB is going down! Yet they are trying to raise the price, absolutely stupid.

I guess the CRTC has to reverse its decision or the Government is going to step in.

I have a 60GB limit of downloads outside of Iceland. So stuff downloaded from an Icelandic server doesn't count towards that limit. ^_^

I guess so, but the lack of emoticons in his posts makes it look serious.

See? Now my post looks over dramatic. All it needs is this sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7g9WjcGdxuM.

I cancelled my Netflix subscription. When cancelling they already knew people would due to internet cap, they wanted to know why and they had an option for "Internet Cap". LOL

Well without further ado, here is a crap filled plan. Weeee! Good god my ISP is already announcing plans from 25 to 150 dollars a month. http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2011/01/canada-gets-first-bitter-dose-of-metered-internet-billing.ars

25GB a month. Are you [censored] kidding me.... so I'm guessing 60 dollars for a measly 60GB a month or so. I know my ISP's top plan is 150 for 350GB a month, this is generally only for people with multiple computers.

A $1 for every GB over your limit. 2$ a GB if you go over on the high speed plan. Hahahah.

How about this: I (or my Grandparents, more accurately) pay $30 a month for a 5GB cap-limited modem capability on my blackberry because of a lack of real wifi capability in my neighborhood (no major carrier has lines out here. It's ridiculous).

I don't know, I legitimatly convinced this guy in Montana that I lived in an igloo (I live near Calgary which is only a few hour drive) so I wouldn't be surprised if that post was legit. I'm pretty sure it's an obvious joke though lol.

I don't even know how much bandwidth I use, but I've never had a problem with it going over before.

Been quite some time, but I feel a status update is needed. Thanks to many people the original petition has finally reached the 500k mark. This new petition will be to find out exactly what we want out of our internet service, and how not to limit it. I can only encourage like minded people to sign. http://petition.liberal.ca/crtc-ubb/

You know this is Liberal propoganda? If they get in power they will do nothing to change anything, and in fact actually make it worse. Also all you are doing is giving the Liberals your email so they can spam you if you do check off the boexes, so be carefull "signing" this petition.
