Woah, I just found this page:

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Canceled_Fallout_games

Did you know that there have been more canceled Fallout games than published ones?

Interplay had a hard time getting their [censored] together on any projects, as a studio they have many more cancelled games than created ones. In a way this is true for most game studios, but the thing about them is most of their cancelled games were announced, and Van Buren was even created with first-run graphics and gameplay, not ready for release but you'd think when they had gotten that far they'd see it through, but they inexpicably fired most of their PC staff as their version of Fallout 3 was nearing completion

I'm glad they cancelled Brotherhood of Steel 2, any continuation of the first game would've svcked because the plot of that game svcked, but Tactics 2 sounded awesome, mutated walking crocadiles! I'd so buy that.

Actually, none of these canceled games was ever officially announced, aside from FOBOS2, or advertised. And yeah, they shouldn't have canceled Van Buren and Tactics 2.

Unfortunately, due to cancellation we never got the real Fallout 3(AKA Van Buren). I'd hope one day, that Van Buren will be released, and that perhaps the fans can with the appropriate editing software, and time should be able to produce a superior product.

Van Buren was not as close as is commonly supposed. And we may yet see some of it realized in New Vegas, though we'll know soon if those rumblings are correct.

In general, though, Black Isle (Interplay's RPG studio) had a lot of projects that were cancelled. As much as I love what they did create, there were a lot of bad decisions that contributed to their ultimate demise.

Bethesda has stated that they have no plans to finish or release Van Buren, siting that it's not their code or game so they don't feel that it's appropriate.

However as Sarkus points out some of the ideas in Van Buren are being reused. Fallout 3 has a few small references and New Vegas (which overlaps the Van Buren territory) is likely to include many others.

There is a tech demo for Van Buren available for download on No Mutants Allowed. It is very very short though (will take 5 - 10 min. to complete), but other than that it gives us an idea of what Van Buren was supposed to be like.

Well, it's a pre-alpha tech demo, so it's not really that representative of what the final game would be like.

Placeholder graphics and only the RT combat mode implemented at that point.

Van Buren would have been an amazing product, there is no doubt in my mind!
