Cannot find crash solution

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 12:02 am

I have a problem where Oblivion will not stop crashing, no matter what i do. Ive tried so many things. This has been happening to me ever since i got the game in 2008 but im just now starting to play again and this problem is very frustrating. I have installed all the latest drivers on my graphics card. I have completely updated windows and ive even installed mods that are supposed to help with this. Ive installed the "Unofficial Oblivion Patch" and then i have installed "nvidia black screen fix" and nvidia black screen toggle fix." None of these have helped, that ive noticed, whatsoever. If someone could make ANY suggestion it would be greatly appreciated!

SYSTEM:
MS windows xp professional SP3
Intel Pentium D CPU 2.66 GHz
1.5 GB of RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS
and if this is any help im running the solid copy of E.S. IV Oblivion GotY edition

Your system is way too old for the "Latest Drivers" to work properly in an antique game, that's all.

Crashing like this can be frustrating. However, I think that given that the game and your listed system are about the same age, I suspect that they should work together.

Almost all of my crashes have to do with bad skeletons within meshes for clothing or armor--most having to do with custom pieces that I nifskope together on my own.

Please check the following:

Delete (or rename the extention from *.nif to *.orig) the skeleton.nif and skeletonbeast.nif files in both the \meshes\characters\_1stPerson and \meshes\characters\_male folders within your data directory. Bad skeletons mean almost every animation can cause a crash.

If you have any self-niffed armor or clothing that you have custom created or combined using nifskope, rename those extentions to .orig as well to test whether that may be causing the issue. If you have so many that you do not know where to begin, bit by bit rename entire subfolders under \meshes\clothing\ or \meshes\armor\ (for example, rename \meshes\armor\glass to \meshes\armor\YY_glass to test whether it is possible the meshes within the glass pieces of armor are causing the issue. This forces Oblivion to use the default glass armor from the .BSA file rather than the override mesh from meshes\armor\glass folder.

You visit nVIDIA's download pages and navigate to their archived old drivers, select one a couple of years old, like 197, and uninstall the current drivers, then install the replacements. If you don't know how to do that, ask Google for a Tutorial video link.

Already answered fully adequately. This isn't supposed to be a classroom in computer literacy.

Gorath, you are awesome! I can relate to the OP frustration due to ignorance, and I, too had to be reminded that fora for specific games are not intended to be basic file-management/internet data-retrieval seminars. Regardless, you handled it like a godsend to imbeciles like me. It took me a looong time to realize I needed to learn the basics before asking questions on specific problems. ( I still only know that I don' know nuttin' hehe.)

While not relevant to the OP, my problem was upgrading the hardware to run the games, and not learning about the software running everything, then not being able to follow suggestions due to utter ignorance about file-management, terminology, etc.

Anyway, knowing you didn't have to reply further at all, thanks.

Do you have two monitors on your system ?

If so, completely disconnect your secondary monitor, reboot computer, make sure Windows is running in single-monitor mode only.

It solved problem for me. Methinks game gets confused if your main window monitor shows up as monitor 2 when in dual-monitor mode.

Hope this will help,
