Cannot find merged patch

Post » Tue Oct 12, 2010 11:14 am

Hello all,

First of all, I'm sorry if there's already a topic on this. I searched for it, with no results.

As the title says, I cannot find my merged patch, anywhere!

I installed all the mods I wanted, made sure the load order is correct, and basically followed every readme and/or tutorial step by step.

I've done the FO3MasterUpdate which worked just fine without errors.
I created the merged patch with FO3Edit, again without errors, but.... It's nowhere to be found. I can't located it in the data folder, nor in FOMM.
However, every time I start FO3Edit, it shows my merged patch in the list of mods.

At the moment my game won't start either (CTD before main menu), but first things first, the merged patch.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

Here's my load order in case it's needed:

Instant CTD usually means a missing master file, but i can see nothing missing in that LO (but i think DUIF3Extras.esp doesn't need to be used anymore, at least i don't use it :D). Other thing that has caused instant CTD to me is an incompatible resolution setting, try resetting your resolution from the launcher.

As for the patch, it should be saved by the name you entered to the Fallout 3/Data folder. Are you using Windows Vista or 7, and do you have Fallout 3 installed in Program Files folder? It might be UAC preventing the file from being written (but in that case it shouldn't show up in FO3Edit either )

Well I tried disabling all mods, and it seems I messed something seriously up, as even then it won't start anymore, so I'll do a fresh reinstall first to see if I can get it to work.

I'm using W7 x64, and Fallout 3 is installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\.

I'll try adjusting the resolution aswell, see if that works, but I doubt it now that the entire game won't launch anymore.

Thanks for the help! ^_^

If you are reinstalling it, install it outside the Program files directory to avoid the UAC issue. It makes things a lot easier in the long run.

Alright, I'll make sure to do that.

I was my initial idea to install all games in a seperate C\Games folder, but me and good ol' Mr. Brain don't get along too well and I forgot to do so with most of my games.

Anyways, I'll reread some of the readme's and how to install mods (I'm not new to it, I used to mod Oblivion aswell) but just to avoid this again.

Is there perhaps anything I should know while installing these mods, like the order in which to install them?
(In case I happen to overwrite files from one mod with the files from another mod)

Thanks again.

What I usually do on mods that are bigger than just a .esp, I make a FOMOD out of them with the package manager. Makes it easier to fix situations where the wrong files got overwritten.

With those mods, start with Unofficial patch, and then FWE, the rest shouldn't overwrite anything (i'm not sure if those two do either).

Alright, thanks for your help!

I reinstalled the game earlier, but still got the same CTD, even without mods. I think, however, I made a mistake uninstalling the game (forgot some components perhaps, like uninstalling UFP).

I removed the game again and am now triple checking and rebooting my computer to make sure I get a clean install.

I should be fine now though, I'll take it easy with the mods and isntall them one by one instead of all at once.

Once again, thanks for your help!

Seems I'll have to bring this up again, sorry for that.

I reinstalled Fallout 3 a few times now, and I'm still getting CTD's at statup. I installed the game to a seperate \Games folder and got my hands on the merged patch eventually.

However, when installing mods, i'm still getting CTD's, and I made sure to check everything.

My load order matches the FWE readme, and other than the Unofficial Patch, I have no other mods installed. I installed each mod one at the time, then fire up Fallout to see if it's still working. I installed every mod using the FOMM Package Manager. Deleting the mods using this tool won't solve the problem either, as if my game corrupted or something like that.
I also updated my Merged Patch using FO3Edit and FO3MasterUpdate after every install of a new mod.

Here's how I installed Fallout, the DLC's and the mods:
1 - Fallout 3
2 - All DLC's
3 - Patch 1.7
4 - Unofficial Patch + DLC supports
5 - FWE (made sure to install only what's necessary and no duplicates [followers, VATS time, ...]
6 - Project Beauty
7 - FOIP - Project Beauty and FWE
8 - Darnified UI + Darnified FWE support (I think it's the grenade icon)
9 - Weapon Mods Kit
10 - FOIP - WMK and FWE

At this point the CTD's started occuring.

My last load order was:

[X] Fallout3.esm[X] Anchorage.esm[X] ThePitt.esm[X] BrokenSteel.esm[X] PointLookout.esm[X] Zeta.esm[X] Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch.esm[X] CRAFT.esm[X] CALIBR.esm[X] Project Beauty.esm[X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - Main File.esm[X] DarNifiedUIF3.esp[X] CRAFT - Activation Perk.esp[X] Project Beauty- Broken Steel.esp[X] Project Beauty- Point Lookout.esp[X] Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch - Operation Anchorage.esp[X] Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch - The Pitt.esp[X] Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch - Broken Steel.esp[X] Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch - Point Lookout.esp[X] Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch - Mothership Zeta.esp[X] DUIF3Extras.esp[X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - Main File.esp[X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - DLC Anchorage.esp[X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - DLC The Pitt.esp[X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - DLC Broken Steel.esp[X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - DLC Point Lookout.esp[X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - DLC Mothership Zeta.esp[X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - Alternate Travel.esp[X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - Followers Enhanced (BrokenSteel).esp[X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - Optional Restore Tracers.esp[X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - Optional VATS Halftime.esp[X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - Optional Worn Weapons.esp[X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - Project Beauty.esp[X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - Project Beauty (Followers Enhanced).esp[X] WeaponModKits.esp[X] WeaponModKits - FWE Master Release.esp[X] WeaponModKits - FWE Optional Worn Weapons.esp[X] WeaponModKits - OperationAnchorage.esp[X] WeaponModKits - ThePitt.esp[X] WeaponModKits - BrokenSteel.esp[X] WeaponModKits - PointLookout.esp[X] WeaponModKits - Zeta.esp

This time I made a backup of my Fallout folder first, the game's currently in a working state again, though without mods.

Any help would be very appreciated, as I'm totally lost.

Thanks in advance!

Oh! I can actually be helpful!

Your merged patch should be located in "C:\Users\(yourUser)\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3\Data". Or at least, that's where it keeps sending mine. I make an ESP with the GECK, and I have to go fish it out from there. Same with my merged patch.

If it's not, then your W7 is more wonky than mine.

Ah, great to know for future reference, but in the meanwhile that problem has been solved by moving my entire installation location to a new folder, outside any of the W7 standard folders! ^_^

You was told about it from the beginning :)
Under W7 you must avoid Program Files folder, or must disable UAC
