cannot see anything after i upgraded my graphics card

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 1:45 pm

Hi
i recently upgraded my old Nvidia Geforce GTS 250 to a Nvidia Geforce GTX 580 so that i could play skyrim. but know i cannot play oblivion anymore i cannot see a thing after i load my savegame but i can hear everything that happens. its like there is a 100% fog everywhere. i know this is probably because my graphics card isn't supported anymore, but is there any way to make it work? thanks for the help in advance.

After upgrading the card, did you delete the .ini file so that a new one can get generated according to your current hardware config? It's probably still looking for that GTS 250.

Your .ini file is found in My Documents/My Games/Oblivion folder...it is the Configuration Settings file named Oblivion. Either delete it or rename it if you have tweaks and need a reference to look at. Once you start up the game, a new one gets created.

no it didn't work... but i have found out that if i turn off HDR the game works fine which i find strange because i have read that some people with the same GPU as mine can run HDR

This sounds like the Nvidia Black Screen bug. There are some mod fixes that can help.

I believe there's also a tweak for this in Wrye Bash. It doesn't hit all nvidia cards, and it may be something that changing driver versions will help.

Have you got enough power going to your graphics card?
What is it's minimum rating and what's the rating of your PSU?

Also, mudane as it seems could we get a screenshot or two showing what you see in-game? Might help to narrow-down the issue.

the recommended rating for my GPU is 600 watts before i bought the GPU i had a 500 watts PSU but i upgraded it to a 850 watts

Are you forcing AA on in the NCP? I noticed that I had that happen on my GTX260 when I forced both and turned AA off and it went away.

Also, have you tried the Bash version of the fix?

Try the beta drivers then? Just out of curiosity, what CPU are you running? Shouldn't matter, but I'm running out of ideas...

Just a shot in the dark here. Are you enabling HDR in the game, or in the NVidia control panel?

I have a GTX 580, and HDR works fine in Oblivion for me. That is with Anti-Aliasing forced on in the Nvidia Control panel, or with it off. My driver version is 263.09, so it is a lot older then yours.

@ Glargg, I do not see a way to turn on HDR in the Nvidia Control Panel, not globally or by specific game. So unless that is something new, it can only be done in-game.

You're absolutely right. I'm not sure what I was thinking of.

I'm mystified about it, too. I'm running a GTX 560 with HDR and forced AA , and have seen no sign of the problem. I do have the Bash nvidia fix enabled, because I had a minor black screen issue with my previous card.

It dawns on me that you mention buying the GTX580 for Skyrim...but I don't believe you actually state that you HAVE played Skyrim with the card installed. Have you? In other words, is it a proven fact that the 580 functions properly in other 3D games?

Mine is a GTX470 so doesn't necessarily equate to OP. I do, however, run the same 285.26 drivers. They work like a charm for me. AA forced via NCC of course. HDR on in-game.

I'm still baffled. We have to be missing something obvious...assuming you don't have some weird mod incompatibilities or mis-configured utilities or ini settings. Or maybe out-of-date utilities? An old OBSE maybe? Not sure why that would blank your screen, but notice more and more newer mods demand OBSE 20 or higher these days.
