I cant kill the Frost Troll

Post » Fri Dec 02, 2011 4:56 pm

Ok so its 3:30 AM, its snowy and beautiful night. The trip to the monastery is amazing. However sneaking almost the entire road I had the opportunity to spot this frost troll from far and get the first shot. Nevertheless, the dmg I did was really small and on top of that he is regenerating his health. I tried kiting but its no successful.. I think he is too powerful for me at this stage..

I am a Wood Elf, 6th lvl , using Archery and Sneaking. I have equipped the Ancient Nord Bow.
My Archery is 35 (3 perks) and Sneak si 29 (2 perks) .

This is my char. Do you think I should let this fight for now and sneak past this monster or try killing him at all cost?

Yep sprint past him is the best idea

I spent an hour trying various ways to kill that trolls ass but it didn't work, one or two hits at that level and i was toast. I even tried luring it backwards to some of the followers sitting around the shrines...the troll kicked their ass before still killing me

Trolls are set at level 24, they do not scale with your character so level up and come back later. To get to the monastery at that level-run like hell past it :D

Got any poison to use on him?

Other than sprinting past him, If you have a sword or two handy you could try that. I went up that way myself at about the same level and that worked out fine...but of course I'm rp'ing an aging, half blind Nord Warrior who specializes in one handed weapons. (Blades in particular)

I manage to kill them well enough. I'm level 12. If I cant fus ro da them over a large drop then I fus ro da to stun, hit them while there down and duke it out until my health is low, heal fus ro da again. They are perfectly manageable eventually. You just need patience.

TROLLS are TOUGH

Your archery is only good for an opener and maybe on or two shot's depending on how far you are away. You're Sneak at 32 is useless in the situation. If it was 50 and you managed to climb to the top of where he sit to ambush it with some good daggers it would be more useful be even then at your level wouldn't kill him. Their only weakness is fire which you probably don't use as it sounds like your a thief/assassin. Best to run past him and come back latter when your better suited with the tools to take him out.

I tried flame because I like mage and melee. So I have like an axe in one hand, and the flame in another and he hits me three times literally and I go down. So I used my companion as a distraction and Sprint past

I spent about 20 minutes on that stupid frost troll before using whirlwind sprint. I feel no shame about it either.

I had the same problem. I usually don't like to use companions but I found that Lydia was a huge help against the troll. Use poisons and let Lydia tank the troll while you unload on it. She won't die (for me at least) but she will get dropped to her knees eventually.

I can't sprint past him either. I am honor bound to kill any challenger!

with trolls its easier to dodge melee range and attack from there. trolls have large delays between attacks and tend to rush two attacks at once in fixed direction. get a one hand weapon and spell(preferably fire) and kill it.

if you want to stick to your character well do what i do just dodge him and shoot. it should be clear to you that you won't be able to stand in one place and kill it with sneak critical before it comes near you and maul your head

Burn it with fire, youd be surprised how quickly it loses health while on fire. Also if you don't want to use magic to burn it, use a torch, block and while blocking hit your attack. You will then use the torch to set it on fire.

I wouldn't feel too bad about a troll kicking your ass at lvl 6
I easily killed it with fire but there have been other enemies less suited for my mage who I couldn't beat at a low level
just went back to kill one of them and it felt really satisfying to be able to do it (was still hard)

I really don't get this. I play on Expert and just made the Hrothgar trip at L15. He died after 4 Firebolts, the fire shout and one or two attacks with my Blade. I did spec into Fire though. And perhaps the infamous troll is locked at a level lower than me.

Apart from that I do find the 7000 stairs impressive. Made me think of a pilgrimage to Tibet. I read a lot of people found the trip extremely underwhelming.

yeah probably not gonna take him at level 6. Trolls got easy for me when I got the staggering effect from my arrows, helps with kiting them, I actually killed two of them simultaneously once.

Yeah, I think most people are making the trip to High Hrothgar a little earlier than level 15. I think I was at level 6 myself when I went. I'm playing a heavy armor, single-hand-plus-shield Nord warrior and I couldn't do squat to him, either with a low-level flame spell or my weapons. I ended up climbing around on the cliffs above him and getting by that way, then took a different route down the mountain.

You can lower your difficulty for this fight if that won't ruin your experience. I'm guilty of doing it in Dwarven ruins.

I pulled him down the hill so he attacked the girl at the shrine, this bought me more time but I still couldn't kill it, got so close. I was lvl 8 or so.

I took him on as a axe/shield nord warrior at level 12, was not too much of a problem. I think level 6 is a bit too low to take him on though.

Nothing more fun that a boss you need to run from and repeatedly spam potions.

Honestly, this crap is the only thing stopping me from completely enjoying the game to the fullest extent. Im continually encountered enemies who are so powerful I'd imagine they'd have no trouble beating the main quest themselves, why dont they just save the world instead of me? :P

Who needs to be dragonborn when you can have 1500 health somehow...

I read somewhere in Oblivion that most people think that trolls are unkillable, so yea its normal that you would think they are hard. But they have a very strong weakness to fire. Dual Casting flames, maybe even with the dual casting perk, and maybe even stagger, and it won't stand a chance.

Man,I HATED that troll,I made the trip up the 7000 steps at about the same level as you were and it took me two or three tries at killin' that svcker before it went down.Definetly use fire, that weakens it more than anything else i had in my inventory at the time, that and don't try to stand toe to toe with it,that won't work at all!

I think I was level 8 or so with my wood elf when I made that trek. Using archery and sneaking as well. I didn't have a hard time finishing off the frost trolls, but I was also using Hunting Bow of Embers (the fire effect helps against the trolls) and once he'd get close enough I'd switch to a dagger/sword combo for the final blows.

Don't forget to use your shout, too. You shouldn't have that much of a problem killing a troll at your level and with those skills. Some better equipment would help however...
