I give kudos to anyone who endorses and comments on this mod, thanks ;)

(PLEASE READ the ENTIRE README)

Canteen v5d add's 11 new unique canteens to the world for the player to discover, 24 collectable canteens total. (hint file included in archive)
With this version if the player is not in hardcoe mode the health restore effect from water will be active, if the player is in hardcoe mode it will not and the dehydration effects will be active instead.

Canteen v5b now uses a bsa for the art files, this eliminates the texture path issues some users were having, thanks to jog for the heads up.

Canteen v5 makes some major changes to the mod, no need to worry the base functionality of the mod remains the same, as detailed below.

1st change - the default esp with 10 drinks and vanilla effects has been removed in favor of the more realistic hardcoe version with 5 drinks and effects halved.

2nd change - the option to choose the canteen skin has been removed and the canteens are now all useable unique items, thats 13 canteens.
The new "US" canteen is now considered the default and is available fro free on Doc Mitchell's porch, it can also be purchased from Chet and Angelo so you can get a few extras.
The other 12 canteens are unique one only items and can be found scattered around the wasteland, there is no quest involved, no rhyme or reason to placement they are just sitting around at different locations for you to find. (a hint file is included with this archive and is also available as a seperate download)

All the canteens are useable and have the same functionality.

3rd change - this is a fix that "hopefully" fixes the issue some users were having with medium and small textures.
Note that all the canteens have a unique skin and name but they all share the same generic icon.

As with v4 the menu update issue has been resolved and you can now fill water bottles.

===============
Description:
===============

Add's a re-fillable, multi use canteen to the game.

===============
Details:
===============

If like me, you were dissappointed that the vault 13 canteen is a continual effect
item that you can't interact with then your gonna like this mod.

Add's a re-fillable, multi use canteen, US wasteland style!
You can get a free empty canteen right at game start on the Doc's front porch rail, there are
also 12 more hidden in the wastes, the US canteen can be purchased from Chet and Angelo and "very rarely"
can be found as loot.

"hardcoe esp" as of v5 this is the only esp

The canteen has 5 uses, an empty canteen weighs .1, each use weighs .4 and a full canteen weighs 2.1 lbs. (for reference a gallon of water weighs a little over 8 lbs depending on elevation)
1 qt size more closely matches the relative size of the canteen model in game.
Removes health effects from all water.
Some sources may have more or less rads when you drink from them but filling will always be:
Clean source = Purified Water 0 Rads = Canteen Full Clean
Dirty source = Dirty Water 6 Rads = Canteen Full Dirty
Each use provides 25 pts of hydration, a vanilla water bottle weighs 1 lb and provides 50 pts.
Since the water bottle is a single use item and this is a hardcoe esp I've reduced the water bottles
weight and hydration to match a drink from the canteen, 0.4 lb and 25 pts, empty water bottles weigh 0.02 lbs.
Also reduced a drink from the lake, puddles ect to match.
As in the default game if you have the "Water Challenge Perk" you gain an additional 7 pts per drink.
With the hardcoe esp water types have no healing effects.

With the esp users can also fill empty water bottles. They work the same as the canteen except they are single use items.

A "Canteen Empty" will show up in your misc items and does nothing, you can fill it from
any water source, sinks, water fountains, urinals, toilets, water valves, lakes, puddles ect.

When you fill a canteen a "Full Canteen Clean or Dirty" will show up in your aid tab, clicking on it
will take a drink remove the full and replace it with a "Canteen 4UC (clean) or 4UD (dirty)" and so on.
When you use the last drink the canteen will again be replaced with an empty in your misc tab.

If you have a canteen with clean water in it and fill it at a dirty water source then you will
get a "Canteen Full Dirty" and vice versa.

You can fill a canteen at any time to get a full canteen.

You can have multiple canteens in your inventory.

I also included a few recipes to fill canteens from cactus, and water bottles and vice versa.
No level requirements, needs the campfire to use.
The recipes can only be used with the default "US" canteen.

===============
Compatibility:
===============

May not play well with any mods that alter the water types?

===============
Bugs/Issues:
===============

Not really an issue but a design decision, when you want to take sip from any source your canteens
will automaticly be filled, I feel message boxes break immersion so you have no choice in the matter.
and Im sorry about the message spam but without the notifications it might be hard to know whats going
on when you take a drink and fill.

Looks good but why can't I fill from the lake? I'd like that to be added.

At a guess I'd say there's no object reference to activate and therefore no way to trigger the script involved.

That would be correct, it can be done via a hidden perk and quest but after several attempts I gave up, it caused ctd's
Maybe I can make it work in a later version, until then (if ever) please just enjoy as it is, it works great and with
the multitude of water sources to fill from and the ability to carry multiple canteens you should never run out of water.

edit, I am working on an updated esp to allow filling from other water sources.

I've gotten a mod that allows filling water bottles - will this conflict? I assume yes because both seem to modify the scripts on water activators. I like the canteen idea more, anyways, so I'll just go ahead and convert over to that.

It would be nice if you decided to overhaul the water collection/consumption though.

This mod sounds nice.

When you take a drink you need to close then re-open your pipboy for it to update.

After you add the updated item to the player's inventory, try this:

	player.AddItem Pencil01 1 1	player.RemoveItem Pencil01 1

and see if it acts better for you.

Sounds great. Added to my list of mods to try out this weekend. :) :)

One thought/suggestion: Perhaps you could make the canteen itself an activated item when you pick it up while in sneak mode, and allow for refilling from dirty/purified water bottles there?

That way one wouldn't have to find a workbench just to pour water from a bottle into your canteen...

Just played around with the canteen this morning, and have to say it now replaces the refill bottled water mod for me, good job!

I did tweak the settings a bit to take away healing effects from drinking, so it would mesh well with another mod that does the same for food

my only suggestion would be to make a version that does the same for folks who cannot or will not do the same, who also desire to take away healing effects from water

outstanding mod simple and works well thanks for letting us use it in our games :goodjob:

Canteen has been updated to v2, big thanks to "exoromeo" and "Tarrant" for their help. This will likely be the last update as I am happy with it now and I have other projects.
I am using this in my current game but have not tested it throughly so let me know if some thing is wonkey and I'll fix it asap.

Cheers

Canteens, as they should have been.

Now if only I could make my lame Vault 13 canteen work like this.

Or maybe if someone would take this mod... and make versions of each of those wonderful canteen textures included... all available together. (kind've)

Oh well. Got me my v.2 now.

Cheers!

I actually thought about this but because of the way the mod is built it would require creating a bunch of redundant files with unique names and I didn't want to do that so...pick the texture you like and play on ;)

Just wanted to add that v2 of Canteen no longer conflicts with the water bottle filling mods since it no longer attaches any scripts to the activators, both mods should play nice together.

Can you release some variations? 10 charges are a lot and extreme unrealistic when compared to the standard .5 liter bottles

I would like a version with 2-3 charges

I would like a pony!

ok, seriously...

I've never had a canteen that only held 2 or 3 drinks, or a water bottle for that matter, I like 10, if you don't feel free to edit the mod to suit your taste.
I suppose that the remove dehydration effect could be viewed as a little much but it is the same as a default game bottle of water and I like it that way.

As a side note "Imp's Timescale Adjuster Mod" includes the function to adjust your dehydration rate...very handy if you feel the default rates and/or water bottle/canteen rates are to easy.

Well, if a bottle of water removes 50 from your dehydration meter and you die after three days of no water (so you need around 300 H20 per day) and you need to refill your canteen twice per day (which sounds reasonable unless the canteen is gigantic), that canteen would provide three 'drinks' of water. Even if you make it so you only need to fill it up once per day, that's only six drinks. Ten drinks means you need to refill the canteen once every one and a half days, and that's a little extreme.

Extreme or not...10 drinks it is, I like it this way, if you don't...don't use it.
it's all relative...you could just pretend that the 1 canteen is actually 3...whats the diff
Never fails to amaze me how people can pick apart a mod.
If you really feel it makes hardcoe to easy then just see my above post about Imp's mod.

So, you've got a canteen that holds 5 liter ? Sounds more like a canister too me :D

Reducing the amount "healed" would be a nice option too, but you like it unrealistic, fine.

Ha ha...what ever

The weight, volume, amount healed and the number of charges are all relative to a number of other factors, I could adjust them all 20 times and some one would still be unhappy

I like ten drinks just fine. I think it's a good number.

Personally, -my- concern is with the bottled water! Why do I drink that entire damn bottle in one gulp? Why?!

Does this game -really- think that, in my supreme thirst, somehow I've just decided to forgo all semblance of reason and -gulped- the entire thing down? In the middle of the desert, where I might not see water again for days, does this game honestly think that nobody would take a couple SWALLOWS out of their bottle of water, ten tuck it away for later?

Honestly. BOTTLES ought to have a good six or ten drinks in them.

Of course... maybe one of those water-bottling mods handles that?

Good point, exactly why I made the canteen! of course as has been stated, the weight, amount of dehydration removed ect are all relative values subject to personal opinion and circumstance.
Far as I'm concerned the canteen mod is done...I gots more fish to fry ;)
