Captain Britain?

Post » Fri Mar 25, 2016 12:05 pm

Word is that Marvel is planning a live action http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/scale_super/5/54353/3348934-captain+britain+-+original+costume_color_12x-lrg.jpg TV series. The original character was given his powers by Merlin of the Arthur legend. Although the legend mostly took place in what is now South West England, it's actually from Welsh Celtic legend. As a result, I think the most logical actor to play him would be https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Bale.

His actual origin is kinda vague, so what accent should he have? Unfortunately, Welsh or English West Country (btw: I'm from the West Country) would make him sound silly.

Also, they definitely should make the series a hyper fictional version of England, otherwise people would laugh at it. Maybe make it like Gotham is a hyper fictional US city.

If it works, could he become part of the US Avenger franchise?

Any thoughts?

It seems too many places in Britain have a claim to Arfur, including the likes of Cumbria.

It doesn't have to be all, "arrr, fetch an aaaahmbliance, and make sure it is equipped with ay spaaaaahtliaarr"*, they could make him sound like a pirate. Yarr.

* yes okay, showing my rather excessive age again.

Edit: knobs: why is it that forums that mandate "edited by" always make me blind to typos until after I've posted? Knobs.

If he did exist experts have found the most evidence in the South West, particularly https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tintagel, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glastonbury and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadbury_Castle,_Somerset. Because of their proximity with each other, it is quite logical to believe that a chieftain like Arthur could well have connections with all three locations. Glastonbury was also surrounded by an inland marsh/sea in that period (between 400 and 500ad), making it an island. It's only over the centuries that the area has been drained for farming purposes, which is why they get flooding there during heavy rain.

Accent wise, are you suggesting a sort of middle-class West Country, just with a slight twang? It might work, just so long as he doesn't say "me luver" like they do in Devon...But honestly, the West Country accents are all ridiculous. I've spent a lifetime trying to shrug mine off!

Well I can certainly appreciate the swamp: my usual story (I don't have many) is that I'm from Jarrow, a name which is thought to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon word for swamp. And it certainly was that. I'd occasionally fall into the marshy bits as a child and can report that they were very, very smelly indeed.

I shouldn't really make any comment about accents since they seem to be a bit of a South Eastern fixation on the rest of the country and I've had a lot of unpleasantness about that for many years. Fortunately, Oxford is sufficiently outside that particular radius and nobody seems to care in the least how I talk, as long as I'm intelligible. Which admittedly I don't always do.

But I seem to have deviated somewhat from the point. I'd kinda like to see Arthur's famous sword, though if it ever existed, I bet it would actually look really rather pedestrian and simply be in the business of being a sword rather than a decorative object. But I've still failed to be especially relevant.

Mostly unrelated to the topic, but from what I understand the "evidence" linking Arthur to Tintagel is simply that Geoffrey of Monmouth decided to set one of his stories there.

Okay, I think the Arthur thing has knocked us right off subject. We can comfortably say that the character shouldn't be played by Gerard Butler, as been suggested on other sites, can we?

It would be cool. Not only because i'm 1/2 British. But because it would be another hero with a non-american view of the world.

Yes. You'll have to forgive my not quoting every comment, because I normally use IE and quotes don't work with IE. It's a right pain having to turn on Firefox ever time I quote someone.

I think he was originally (he was created in the 70s) supposed to be our version of Captain America, only with Arthurian origins. Merlin gives him his powers and weapon after he's almost killed in a motorcycle accident.

I'm not referring to any place in Britain in particular. I suppose anywhere that isn't London.

I thought by your location being the "UK" you'd know that Britain is England, Wales and Scotland? London is just the capital city of the UK. These days a lot more of us tend to be a bit more specific about our origins. In other words, saying that you're half British could mean half English, half Welsh, or half Scottish.

I liked the suit he had when Alan Moore and Chris Clairemont got hold of him.

http://ifanboy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/CaptainBritain.jpg

Amusingly he explains in one of the "Excalibur" comics that it's the law in Britain that Superheros have to wear a helmet.

Be interesting to see what they do with it.

Can't possibly be worse than "Jessica Jones".

Yes, it would be interesting if they could pull it off without causing howls of laughter. As I said before, if they want to avoid any unintended comedy they'd have to make his environment an ultra fantasy version of England, a bit like a modern version of the movie Excalibur crossed with Nolan's Batman. They can't just have him running around Bristol city centre! lol

Which half?.

So another show that completely removes the lore, since Psylocke is his sister, even got the edition where she went from anglo to asian. You'll only know he's Captain Britian if he's complaining about the weather, and that the foods to greasy and the tea's not the same as at home, and you cant get any Watney's Red Barrel, and their swimming pools are full of fat German businessmen pretending they're acrobats and forming pyramids and frightening the children and barging in to the queues.

So will Captain Britian go through the whole series completely ignoring the fact that he knows all these other super heroes, but cant actually know them because their names are contracted to another company.

I come from all over Britain, very roughly i am 1/4 English and 1/4 mixed Northern Irish, Welsh and Scottish. But I know the family from the NI/Welsh/Scottish side better, therefore identify more with that part. Despite being overall more English.

I know that London is only the capital, i live in the UK. But it seems like 99% of shows are set in London when they visit Britain. I'm sure that most foreigners think of London when they think of Britain.

British landscape can be varied for instance -

I wonder if it would be a different superhero's life in Britain, a bit like the different issues that police face.

I think it was "Chewin The Fat" (comedy show) that had a Scottish Policeman riding with his American Counterparts.

They explain to him how gang violence is pretty intense in this area of the city and they often have to perform spot checks on vehicles that are potentially filled with armed gangbangers to which the Scottish Policeman replies,

"Ay, I once came accross a pack of 4 underage youths sat outside the local corner shop on top of a 24 of lager and had to tell them 'right lads... move along now'"!

Who will end up as Captain Britain's ultimate nemesis... The Noisy Neighbour or Truant Children?
