My car goes thunk

Post » Thu Mar 13, 2014 6:48 am

Hi folks,

My 2005 Expedition makes an audible thunk that increases in speed with acceleration. I can feel it through the break pedal, but it's not the brakes (replaced those as solution number 1, and they needed it). It seems to disappear when I turn hard in either direction, especially to the left.

It's goign in soon to see what the folks at the shop say, but I'd like to go in with some ideas. Could it be a bearing? Axle?

Thanks,

Rumbly

If it makes the clunkling sound when turning specifically it's more than likely a worn CV boot. They can change the boot but it's usually best to just change the axle. I'm not sure how the Expeditions are, do you know if it's half-shafts or solid? I'm guessing half, so they'd be able to change just the side giving you a problem.
