Career opportunities are the ones that never knock

Hola amigos. What's shakin'? I know it's been a long time since I rapped at ya, but the waters are not always smooth in Lake Anchower.

Reading the news lately, seems like internet security is going to be a massive growth industry. For those out there worried about job prospects, I wondered if you had thought about this field. Seems like a guaranteed career.

Meh, I can think of guaranteed jobs that sound like more fun.

Got a job interview tomorrow for Afterschool Club Superviser. Low pay but fun work and children aren't going away.

I think it depends on the context of security. Certain online events *cough* Ashley Madison *cough* have once again, opened the never ending discussion on how protected you are online. There are plenty of companies that already try to sell you piece of mind in that sense. Home security has never been a huge pain-point for Canadians although peace of mind when it comes to your home and kids, and those sort of things is always on the top of mind.

I'm one of those cliche people who will tell you to follow your dreams, work your ass off and do what you love to do because if you do, you won't have to worry about job prospects.

Governments are starting to hold companies liable for breaches. So this area must explode soon. If you are doing CompSci already I would say to go for it.

Personally I would find it too stressful, though.

Network security or IT Security, not Internet security.

It's not an easy field at all. Budget usually gets pissed on by higher ups that don't see the value, a field usually very hard to get into because it's usually pretty close-knit and rarely allows people in that don't instantly start out of college, easily made a scapegoat in the event of a hack, generally unappreciated by the rest of IT, and constantly trying to find the balance between ease of policies vs hardening. It's literally a career and you'll have to dedicate a good chunk of your life to it. It's definitely not for those "worried about job prospects" or a "guaranteed career"

I've considered it before but it doesn't really mesh well with my goals.

Right now I'm just working as a cognitive brain trainer until I'm able to get accepted into a Ph.D. program for clinical psychology.

I do plan on learning some programming/basics that could probably apply to internet security within the next year or so before gradschool stuff hopefully starts, though.

If I were to do it all over again, I would feel a bit compelled to do something computer-related, I think. Part of me wishes I had learned programming/scripting and computer science principles at an early age, tbh. I feel like it will probably be a bit of a normal occurrence as technology continues to advance.
