Carriage system is in.

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:54 pm

I'm making this just in case some of you aren't going to go to the IGN thread. Basically, it has been confirmed that there is a carriage system. You can use it kind of as an alternative to the fast-travel I guess...

http://pc.ign.com/articles/115/1158651p1.html

IGN: For getting around the world, what methods will be available? Fast-traveling, and if so is it the same system from Oblivion? Horse riding? Any other travel options, such as something similar to the silt striders from Morrowind?

Todd Howard: If you've been to a location before you can fast travel back. We also have a carriage system that can take you to some major locations that you haven't been yet, so it's a bit of a mix.

Yeah, but I think I could live with this format (i.e. able to travel from the wild to a city and from a city to another city, but not be able to travel to the wild).

Well... you probably can't use it from anywhere. And you definetly can't go anywhere. And it will probably cost ya.
So there's that...

Oblivion instant fast travel + Morrowind style fast travel.

Everyone should be happy.

I would say it's more closely related to the silt strider services (and boats and gondolas, I loved those gondolier hats) from Morrowind than direct fast travel from Oblivion.

An absolute great idea and it'll take you to places that you haven't discovered yet with Fast Travel. Hm I guess the line in the GI mag where they were going to expand Fast Travel is this feature right here.

I found the following question quite interesting.

IGN: Can you ride dragons in Skyrim?

Todd Howard: Not in the way you're asking.

Interest piqued....

Yup. Not only does carriages please we who dislike OB-fast travel. But it also makes sense for major cities to have some sort of transportation system between them.

It's a great confirmation :P

To me yes. To you yes. There are people that prefer this to the game simulating the time it would take them to run, however.

I think this is a good compromise. Personally I think I'll go on foot to each location rather than using these carriages, but it's a great option for those that don't want to use fast travel. I have nothing against fast travel. I just like exploring on foot first.

I'm quite happy about this announcement. Depending on how the game is laid out, I'll probably end up using it exclusively over fast travel. Take a carriage to the town I need, then use that town as a hub to venture out on exploratory expeditions.

I will probably use both systems. I'll use the Carriage to discover all the places that it can go too and then I'll be able to Fast Travel back to those places later. Even better if I'm roleplaying a character I won't need to worry about long trips in between cities because of this system and I won't need to use Fast Travel period. (Although I will miss out on leveling)

This is easily the best compromise between both Morrowind's travel system and Oblivion's travel system. I just hope the carriages don't cost an arm and a leg to ride in.

Yeah, it sounds like normal Oblivion fast travel, but instead of the major cities already being unlocked at the beginning, you can go to them the first time by paying for a carriage.

Sounds great to me. Not fast-travelling in Oblivion was tough, but with the addition of the carriage system, I don't think I'll have a problem with it. God, Skyrim just sounds better and better... And IGN had some screens I hadn't seen yet! :D
