Carriages!

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 9:56 am

Seems like we get fast travel both Oblivion and Morrowind style! :foodndrink: I'm surprised that there's no thread about this with all the fast travel threads that were in the past.
Now it's finally resolved, but are you satisfied?

The reason there are no threads about it now is because it was confirmed over two months ago here (search for the word "carriage"): http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/115/1158651p1.html

I'm very very happy for it and I will definitely ONLY use the carriage system :D

Having anything other than the Morrowind style is just lazy, and an attempt to bring in casual gamers.

What happened to making games for people who aren't casual gamers?

If you don't want the Oblivion fast travel, just mod it out and keep the carriages. Awesome!

I'm very happy that carriages have been added . . . but I'm hoping that carriages are only one part of a FULL travel network. And I hope that carriages will not be free transportation.

Check my link tohttp://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Travel

This is what Morrowind's Fast Travel consisted of:
1.) silt striders
2.) ships
3.) vivec gondoliers
4.) mages guild guides teleports
5.) propylon chambers teleports
6.) mark/recall spell
7.) intervention spells (almsivi and divine)

This is the Fast Travel that has been confirmed for Skyrim:
1.) carriages
2.) free-fast-travel-from-anywhere (clickable maps)

My fear is that all we will get is carriages, with free-fast-travel-from-anywhere to fill in the gaps.

Maybe, but it's way easier to add more travel ways using the carriages script than creating a new one. So, even if carriages are the only Morrowind style fast travel system, this is a very good new.

Would you rather just have fast travel, like in Oblivion? I wouldn't. This works for me. I don't need all the extra travelling systems there were in Morrowind. It would be nice, but carriages are good enough. If people don't have enough self control to only use carriages, thats thier problem.

I'm not against Fast Travel . . . ALL Morrowind's travel other than walking or swimming was Fast Travel. I'm against a TES RPG including free-fast-travel-from-anywhere (Oblivion's clickable map) . . . because it will likely mean that will will not end up with a FULL travel network (like what existed in Morrowind).

The entire northern border of Skyrim is on the Sea of Ghosts . . . so it makes no sense at all not to include transport by ship to the settlements that are near the coast.

And what about the Mages Guild Teleports . . . were they just a fad in Morrowind?

The only reason not to have ship transportation and Mage Teleports in Skyrim is that Beth doesn't have to provide a FULL transportation network (like what we had in Morrowind) . . . they can just appease us with carriages, and then use free-fast-travel-from-anywhere to fill in the gaps. If free-fast-travel-from-anywhere was removed from the game, they would likely put in a FULL transportation network, instead of a MW/OB hybrid (which is only going to make players who use free-fast-travel-from-anywhere completely happy). Again, I'm pleased that we well at least have carriages . . . but I'm still holding out for a more complete transportation network in Skyrim.

Oblivion was the ONLY TES game that included free-fast-travel-from-anywhere. Free-fast-travel-from-anywhere weakens the game, but removing any consequence from traveling. It removes the main reason to purchase a horse. It makes it way too easy to clean out a dungeon (and pretty much negates having a carrying capacity, when you can just beam back and forth). It makes the size of the map inconsequential (why have an open game world if you just want to beam across the map?). It makes the game's economy less balanced (why pay for carriage transport when you can just click on a map for free? Along with being able to easily clean out dungeons and cash in on all the loot.)

This is not just about having self-control . . . it alters the game's mechanics and balance. It becomes a crutch and lessens the need for the developer to fully flesh out other parts of the game. If Free-fast-travel-from-anywhere is in Skyrim, people will use it and expect it to be in the next TES RPG (just like the it-was-in-Oblivion argument . . . and even though it is a cheat), because "it wouldn't be in the game if we weren't suppose to use it."

This might be the most arrogant statement ever. You realize as an allout RPG dev Bethesda's games have always leaned towards the casual side and their writing just barely passable.

End of the day anyone can count as a casual gamer. Plus due to technology advancements genre's are no longer just seperate but combining.

Also we know why Oblivion suffered. Bethesda tried to capitalize on the new console cycle for better graphics and compromised on everything with a handful of advancements. Plus it was their first fully voiced game. Dialogue suffered tremendously.

It has nothing to do with selling out. Instead question Bethesda's abilities rather than elitism.

Anyways yes carriages plus boats/ships are back.

I have a feeling your just a sole Morrowind fan.

Oblivion was a first attempt at that style of game play.

Go have a crack at Daggerfall and see how the combat is in that. Arguably better then Morrowind IMO but very, very weird to get used to.

As for the travel.
I can stop myself clicking the map If I'm that keen.

Or you know. Wasteland, much of which TES(Including Daggerfall) get their mechanics from. And fail from adding any real depth(Attributes)

Skyrim looks fine. It has the advancements and devolvement every RPG has. Truth is Bethesda's never made the level of game Black Isle or Bioware has. However Skyrim currently looks on track to replace Morrowind as their flagship.

I do think this is the best we can hope for. No fast-travel is way more immersive and engaging, I'll just have to bring up the will power to not use it (I'll still use carriages). :P

Their all choices and that's what counts. There is no right way to play or go around. Others trying to dictate one way or the other show how petty they are.

For myself I'm glad there's ingame options like physical transportation or maybe even spells but I can see how others like fast travel.

It seems by Bethesda's embarrassment and tweaking of their horses after Red Dead Redemption that you'll want to actually use them and thus all players will evade their other choices of transportation. Could be other mounts too.

As always ways to suit/help roleplayers are nice. Especially in such a vast world as Bethesda games.

However I hope there's some odd transportation choices as Morrowind.

I'm surprised that there's no thread about this with all the fast travel threads that were in the past.

That's because this is old news.

If they add just boats with the carriages I will be happy with fast travel. I don't really have to have the magical means of travel (spells, guild guides). They were nice and very practical but not crucial to the gameplay experience.

come on man dont be that 'games should only be for hardcoe players' douchenozzle
they gave you an option
that doesnt mean its lazy at all
do you walk into restaurants that sell wings and call them lazy for having hot AND mild sauces? hope not
quit calling them lazy and just use the travel you want
that goes for all the hardcoe-gamer preaching pricks out there

p.s.- i enjoy games that are super indepth and are deeper than most games made for 'casual gamers', but that doesnt give me, or anyone else, the right to be a [censored] about it
especially towards Skyrim and all its great changes and whatnot
sorry for the vent but the gamer war stuff is getting OLD

There were boats in Obliv but they were not a fast travel method (unless you count the quests that used a boat or ship to transport you somewhere). You saw a source that said they were an actual fast travel method and not just piece of the scenary?

I'll be satisfied as long as the Oblivion style fast travel can be toggled off or something. It always felt like a cheat to me.

Ask yourself a couple of questions:

Why would they include transport via carriage or ship when we also have fast-travel?

I'll go out on a limb and assert that carriages and ships will not be free (we've been told you can be hired as a carriage escort, so these are financially motivated operations), so would they really give us fast-travel with no penalty as an alternative? I believe they would not, it would render other transport options redundant and imbalance the game.

So the real question is, what IS the penalty for fast-travel? Apparently something we will be willing to pay to avoid...

Of coarse you'll have to pay to use the in-game transportation options. The reason people wanted them was to keep roleplaying fluidly. Going to a map and fast traveling leaves a hole in your story. How'd you disappear and re-appear elsewhere?

That's usually why.
