Carried Weight - The Good and Bad

Post » Fri Jan 31, 2014 12:03 pm

I have found, while traversing Tamriel, that the weight my character's carry play a HUGE role in what I decide to do. While I really enjoy the realism and immersion of it, it really is a "burden" in the long run.

I skip places of interest on my way somewhere, simply because I KNOW I will get loaded down with loot.

I fast travel much more than I want to, because traveling on foot will inevitably load me down with loot from all the attacks that happen.

I have taken companions, not for their battle prowess, but rather as a mule.

For those that walk everywhere without running, this may not make much of difference. For me, who runs when I can, it really slows down the game. Horses (especially the "Convenient Horses" mod) can help, but carriages are right out of the question.

When I finally get to a village/town/city, I sell by weight instead of price. The blacksmith is ALWAYS my first stop, as armor and weapons are the heaviest loot.

Again, while I really enjoy the immersion of carried weight, I wish there was way to lessen it's decision making importance. What are your thoughts?

Don't pick up so much mundane loot?

Maybe just gems, potions, exotic ingredients, etc.

I wish things weighed more or the starter carry weight was halved.

I take it all.

On PC, I use the "Player.Modav carryweight 100000000000"

Cause I'm crazy and like to grab everything.

I always find myself forced to walking speed and/or looking through my inventory for one or two items to drop and/or looking at my housecarl's inventory. In fact, I was quite annoyed during the first Companion quest when my Housecarl was dismissed because I had to pass up a whole bunch of inventory.

This reminds me of a story when I was playing Fallout: New Vegas, which has the same basic inventory system as Skyrim. One of the vendors in it has an inventory that never reset (in the Novac motel). That was my main base of operations, so his inventory was soon full of dozens and dozens of junk weapons and armor that needed repair. My (male) character had both the male and female "seduce" starting perks. There is a male character at one of the New California Republic posts that could be seduced (only by male characters with the seduce male perk) into repairing every single item in your inventory for free, but only once.

So, I fast traveled back to Novac, bought back as many weapons and armor as I could carry, travel to the base, dumped them in a pile, and repeated until the vendor was empty. Then I picked up every single item until I had about six or seven times my normal carry weight, walked into the base, had him repair everything, dumped it back into the pile, and then sold it back (at much higher prices since everything was repaired to 100%) to various vendors around the greater Las Vegas area. I think I made a quarter million dollars or so doing this. :P

Yeah, I can feel your pain, but I like the realistic-ness of carryweight. But every now & then it does get on your nerves, like when walking back from a dungeon excursion, and of course you'll run into a dragon , or two, along your way, and I just cannot bring myself to leave dragon bones and stuff , and those puppies are heavy !
