Carrying less weapons, all weapons equipped

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:31 pm

So, in all previous TES games you could carry as many weapons as you want. While I don't have anything against it, I think it would be more fun, if the characters could carry only a couple of weapons and all the weapons would be visible on the character in third-person (Something like in The Witcher). For example a character could have a longsword and a bow on his/her back, maybe a small axe on the belt and a dagger strapped to a boot or something. In my opinion this would be a bit more realistic AND our characters would definetly look more bad-ass.

While we're at it, maybe characters could have potions on their belt for quick access. And maybe it would be impossible to use other potions during the combat.

What do you think of these ideas?

Voted No for both because although I'm all in for immersion and realism I actually think this breaks immersion.

sounds good on paper, but it would be the kind of realism in game that would just be an annoyance, unless done really well and I'd rather have them spend that time doing something more important.

This is what I was getting at in my thread but you could carry and use what you wanted just have the quick slot stuff visible.

Dragon Age never had such a feature.
And do you really expect it to work with every single armor/clothing set out there?

I would like this just because it makes you think about how you would equip yourself instead of " I have 20 swords, 5 sets of armor, and 1000 vials of potion to keep me going" Its makes no sense to me to be able to do that, it makes things seam SO fake. If this were implamented it would promote having a horse you could use as a walking equipment stash that you could switch things out before you dive into a cave or ruins. Also perhaps you could have a bag to allow you to carry some extras so that you can still collect your loot of course.

For a fully decked out guy (depending on strength of the character) You should be able to have a full set of armor, one claymore, ax, staff, one handed sword, or whatever "main" type of weapon. One bow and a quiver of arrows. two short blades or daggers/ whatever smaller one handed weapons. Then like 10-20 throwing weapons

I like it but I wouldn't want to restrict others due to preferences I can rp anyway. I would LOVE to see it as part of an optional "hardcoe mode"

Why not? I mean your equipped weapon is already visible in third-person in oblivion. Adding one-two more shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry about Dragon age... haven't played it in a long time. For some reason I remember you could only carry two weapons

actually this system is exactly what they have in far cry 2 minus the belt for potions. you were only allowed to carry 4 weapons at a time. you could have one heavy, one rifle, one pistol and one special like a remote explosive. you were also only allowed to carry a certain amount of ammo although you could upgrade the amount during the game.

this made combat much more enjoyable and kept me playing for far longer than i would have otherwise cause it made me feel more vulnerable.

even without the system its easy to do by simply reducing your carry weight to 200 and then making all potions weight 1 each and weapons and armor weigh around 20 each. this is what i did with my game and made it alot more fun.

Would take away a lot of fun. I pretty much only carry a few items anyway. The clothes/armour I'm wearing, a sword and bow (and arrows) and miscellaneous nick-knacks (potions, scrolls, mortar) but not much. What I especially don't agree with is restricting your inventory in battle.

And what would you do with extra weapons you find in a dungeon?

I think having visible weapons and items on your character would be pretty cool, though everyone would start looking like a pack rat that doesn't want to throw anything away.

I really like the idea of having all the weapons one has visble the character, however the poiton belt is less appealing to me, its not something I would always want to see on my character.

I would hate to play an adventure game with a limited inventory. All that gear needs to be sold after dungeon diving.

i voted yes for both but i actually would be happiest if only the hot-keyed items would show up on ur character and everything else would just stay invisible but ready for the click of a button through the inventory menu. then you have a hot key for poison and u'll have a section on ur charecter showing poison vial(s), unless of course you run out. the hot key thing would would work well too when you want to customise your guy so that unwanted weapons wouldnt always be showing.

I would like it if some form of Fallout: New Vegas' hardcoe mode was implemented.

Voted no, I don't think this approach fits TES. An encumbrance system with balanced weight for all items works alright for me, and nothing is stopping anyone from carrying a limited amount of gear if they feel a wide variety of weapons or items is killing immersion or making things too easy.

This is something I think would be great. Limited number of weapon slots. I also think you shouldn't be able to carry 500-1000 arrows. This would be counter-acted by the increased deadliness of arrows (no longer seeing enemies and the player character "pincushioned.")

The biggest problem I see with this is for looting. But I am bothered that I can carry 3 suits of armor, on my person.

PS. Anyone who is against this...Halo limited players to two weapons, and it worked great. Are you less patient than a Halo player? Huh? Huh? Nah, I'm just kidding, but really, this is not such a bad idea, even though I doubt they would ever include it.

No, if you want to carry a realistic amount of weapons, then by all means do so. I like carrying around 3 swords, and axe, 2 bows and 34870821 potions. :) But I would like multiple weapon visible on my character, as I said in another thread. Just make weapon slots, one is for a sword another for a dagger, and another for bow axe or hammer (since those are on you back)

Yes and yes.

I'm playing an action-rpg game for the PSP called Warriors of the Lost Empire. While you do have a backpack to hold useful items, you can only use items that have been equipped to your "belt" which is a list of about 5 or 6 items that you can quick-select during battle to use instantaneously. Items do stack. Additionally, you can have only up to two different sets of weapons, and change between them during battle. I should note that the mechanics aren't quite able to be transferred to a TES setting, because weapons/shields that you pick up from enemies are automatically stored in you item box, which is only accessible outside of the dungeons. You can't equip new weapons while in the dungeon.

Another game to mention would be Hellgate: London, where you could have up to three weapon "sets" that you can swap to during battle without breaking stride. Pretty fun.

EDIT:
Oh, right, why did I vote "yes." If implemented well, I don't think having a belt with items is really that much of a hassle (as long as like items can stack!). For WotLE, it works well - and that's a combat game where item use is integral to survival. As you pick up items, you can swap items from your backpack and your belt to prepare for conflicts. Consider: the game doesn't let you pause while you look in your inventory. Hence, the necessity of having a few items that can be utilized without needing to go into the inventory.

As long as there's some way that I don't miss out on enemy loot drops, of course...

That's what I thought also. In combination with the hotkeys you always would be able to see what you're switching to. Should provide for more believable, fluid and intuitive combat.

And in what way exactly is Halo a similar experience to any Elder Scrolls game that a gameplay mechanic that worked in it would fit a game designed in a totally different way? Other than 1st person view, they couldn't be any more opposite.

Don't give complexity where its not due. There is no reason to spend more time in menus just for a little bit of realism.
