Carrying your shield on your back

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:25 pm

If you're like me, ie neurotic and detail-driven, it annoyed us greatly to see our character constantly carrying his shield around on his arm. I enjoy walking and melee combat in 3rd person. The only time I use 1st person is when I'm playing a magic-based character or an archer-based character, so I'm sure for the people who are always in 1st person it really doesn't bother you since you can't see it.

It is completely impractical for someone to carrying their shield in their hand throughout the entire time they have one equipped. Anyone else find it as annoying as I do?

I'm confident we will see this.

Not quite annoying, but I think you have a good point you should only have your shield equipped when in combat.

It don't annoy me much, but I see your point, as I also like to play in 3rd person. I won't mind if they put the shield on our back either. I hope they don't have the camera zoom out everytime I sit down or mount/dismount(if mounts are in) like they did in OB though.

That didn't annoy me so much as when certain gauntlets would clip through the shield. But yes, it would be nice to sling the shield on the back when not in combat, easy to implement too. When you draw your weapon it brings your shield out too. Holstering your weapon puts shield back on your back. All with the push of one button.

As a detail, this is pretty important to me too. Characters just look cool with shields on their backs, and it's an obvious and practical way to carry one when you're not expecting a fight in the next ten seconds.

There are several pieces of Skyrim concept art depicting characters with shields on their backs... I really hope that means we can expect to see it in the game.

Agreed, it didn't really bug me too much in OB, but I'd like to see it in Skyrim.

I think it's a safe assumption given Bethesda's meticulous release of information that any and all concepts seen so far will be in the game. This includes the beast of burden+NPC(ie; traveling merchant) as well as weapons and shields being worn on the PC and NPCs. Most of the stuff we have seen in the concept art has been confirmed anyway such as pole arms and one handed staffs.

Well, in Oblivion you can block with your shield with your weapon seated. I always play in 1st person view and this change would supose to me only not being able to block attacks until I draw my weapon. In other words an anoyance. I wouldn't mind it being optional though.

i would always just take off my shield when not in combat, it annoyed me that much. it will probably lie on our backs in this game though, and there will be an option to pull it off our backs like unsheathing a sword in oblivion.

Yeah, It doesn't make sense to be carrying your shield all of the time

Also, for reference, the concept art I mentioned: http://cms.elderscrolls.com/sites/default/files/tes/concept_art/Bear_Encounter.jpg - http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy297/b_harrison/misc/road_to_skyrim_cap02.png

I thought I remembered there being more, but I can't find 'em.

Would really love to see this. But from what we saw in the trailer, I'm not sure if we're going to get it. (Dovahkiin was running and he had the shield on his arm again)

Uh yeah but he was running from a dragon. I'd have my shield in hand too.

Just thinking off topic...http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy297/b_harrison/misc/road_to_skyrim_cap02.png, shows an icy/snowy city near the ocean.
Now, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSRtYpNRoN0&feature=player_detailpage#t=80s we see the same city near the ocean, but this time it looks like summer.

So... would this perhaps mean we kind of get seasons in Skyrim thanks to this dynamic snow? I mean, a concept art image wouldn't show a place as snowy/icy unless there actually was the possibility of it being snowy/icy.

This IS true, I ususally didn't like playing with shields because they would always be wielded. It's not that big if an issue, but if they could put in an animation for the shield that would be cool.

I honestly expect them to do it, since all the other sword and spell games are set up that way now.

I'm annoyed by having shields being worn on people's backs. I don't see it being a very likely solution for the wandering adventurer. Why wouldn't they just leave it on their horse or wagon when they're not using it?

Because they can need it. And if they need it, it's better to have it at your back, accesible by an arm movement, than having to look for it in your wagon or your horses's straps. People actually did it.

Why are you assuming that everyone in the world would have a horse and/or a wagon?

What if you don't have either of those?
