Casting spells on NPCs turn them hostile

In my previous game NPCs often tried to duck, courtesy of Deadly Reflex, when casting spells on them. It was a minor annoyance but they never turned hostile.
In my current game however NPCs turn hostile if I cast Charm on them and Deetsa of the Cheydinhal Mages Guild even turned hostile when I cast a Water Breathing spell directly in front her.
I don't know what governs these things, but hopefully someone has an idea.

at least for me the charm spell hostility issue didn't start happening till i downloaded the DR 5 hotfix patch; however, i never tried switching back to the non-hotfixed version because i considered the charm spell thing worth the other fixes from the patch.

so if you are using the hotfix patch for DR 5 switching back to the other version of the esm/esp may help

Happens with me - I think Skycaptain mentioned that this is a known issue with DR5 - I think if you don't have the NPC active in the target icon, you can cast spells at them, but touch spells are sort of pushing it. I perform touch spells behind NPC backs, but I think they still sense it as they don't really look through their eyes :)

BTW, curious on your merged plugin. Did you set the priority 1 for all of these and create the mergedplugin.esp via TES4Edit? Or was it more complicated?

I thought for a long time this hostile thing was fixed in the hotfix, but only recently noticed that there was a typo in the script so the check for hostile spell did nothing. It should be fine if you manage to pull it off without the NPC detecting you while you cast, or if you manage to pull it off without actually aiming at the NPC.

This is naturally fixed in DR6, the first beta will come out in the end of this month.

I set priority based on load order, but setting them all to 1 should also work since there should be no conflicts.

Hmm...I think some other mod must be interfering, though, since things worked differently in my previous game and I'm using the same version of DR5.
But it seems going into sneak mode helps, even if the target can see you. At least I was able to cast Charm on an NPC while crouching right in front of her. Only one test though.
